We hear your concern about alcohol and cigarettes, and we want to address this with truth and love, seeking God’s will together in Jesus’ name. The Bible does not explicitly forbid the consumption of alcohol, but it does warn strongly against drunkenness and the dangers of addiction. Ephesians 5:18 says, *"Don’t be drunken with wine, in which is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit."* Proverbs 20:1 also warns, *"Wine is a mocker, and beer is a brawler. Whoever is led astray by them is not wise."* Alcohol, when misused, can lead to poor judgment, broken relationships, and even sin. If you or someone you know is struggling with dependence on alcohol, we encourage you to seek freedom in Christ and the support of godly believers.
As for cigarettes and tobacco, while the Bible does not mention them specifically, it does teach us to honor our bodies as temples of the Holy Spirit. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 states, *"Or don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. Therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s."* Smoking is known to harm the body, and addiction to nicotine can enslave a person, robbing them of their health and peace. Jesus came to set us free (John 8:36), and we should not willingly return to bondage.
If this is a struggle for you, we want to stand with you in prayer and encourage you to seek accountability and help from fellow believers. God’s power is greater than any addiction, and He desires for you to walk in freedom. Let us pray together:
Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus, acknowledging that You are the God who heals, delivers, and sets free. We lift up this dear one who is wrestling with alcohol or cigarettes, and we ask for Your strength and mercy to break every chain of addiction. Lord, Your Word says that sin shall not have dominion over us because we are under grace (Romans 6:14). We claim that promise now. Fill this heart with a hunger for righteousness and a desire to honor You in all things. Surround them with godly friends and mentors who can walk alongside them in this journey. Give them the courage to resist temptation and the wisdom to flee from anything that does not bring glory to Your name. We rebuke the spirit of addiction in Jesus’ name and declare that this one is free by the blood of the Lamb. Thank You, Lord, for Your faithfulness and for the victory we have in Christ. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
We also encourage you to meditate on these scriptures for strength and encouragement:
- *"No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it."* (1 Corinthians 10:13)
- *"I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me."* (Philippians 4:13)
- *"If the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed."* (John 8:36)
If you have not yet surrendered your life to Jesus Christ, we urge you to do so today. Only through Him can you find true freedom and salvation. Romans 10:9 says, *"If you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved."* There is no other name by which we can be saved (Acts 4:12). If you would like to know more about how to begin a relationship with Jesus, we would be honored to guide you.
