Disciple of Prayer
2nd update: we now believe he has undiagnosed mental health issues. His grandfather on his father’s side was diagnosed with schizophrenia. These events feel so far from the son I know and raised that this has to be the reason, if not the exact same diagnosis, one that is close. I am praying he can get a true diagnosis from a licensed professional and those results to be considered when sentencing. This is so heavy to carry. The years leading up to this just looked like “normal rebellion” to me. Now I am finding out he has been doing and saying things to people who never told me what was going on. I could’ve gotten him help sooner before something like this happened.

Update: My son was assigned 2 public defenders whom have not spoken to him yet. He had a pretrial court appearance, nothing took place, it was rescheduled. I feel weak but I know I need to be spiritually strong to continue praying and fasting. I am praying and fasting for mercy on his sentence because I now know something is wrong down inside for him to get to this point.

Dear Saints,

I come before you with a heavy heart. I have asked for prayers for my teenage son last year previously when he had got into legal trouble and needed to be in a juvenile detention center for a short while. I really thought the worst was behind him. He is still a teen but considered an adult now and recently he murdered someone. He sat and waited for the police and complied, but when I saw his mug shot I didn’t even recognize him. I thought he was doing better. I have no idea how or when this “person” came about. The victim was a known pedophile and predator, so I’m not sure if this person abused my son in some way or if he saw something. I am definitely not excusing his behavior, but I am just so confused and searching for answers. I believe my son was under the influence of something, drugs, spirits. He is a baptized believer in Christ and came to be baptized around 9 or 10 years old and we have always been in worship services and Bible study whether it be at home or at church. He began to backslide in earlier teen years but as long as he lived with me, he had to attend church, house rules. I don’t know who he is or what has been influencing him but there is an underlying reason I believe because his dad didn’t forge a relationship with him (we divorced when he was 1 year old). I know my son to be living and kind and good with children and people, always liked in school by teachers and students. I’m praying for the victim’s family although I don’t know why this happened but I am also praying for mercy in my son’s sentencing because something has my son’s mind. I tried to do what I could when I noticed he seemed depressed but nothing I did could reach him, no one could get through to him. I know he has to serve time but I know my son needs help and we need to get to the root of the issue. Even now his dad is not interested in interacting with him - that is cruel too. I think he harbors resentment because I left and divorced him after domestic abuse, I think he has taken it out on my son in a neglectful way. Not to make excuses but I’m just trying to make sense of it all.

We come before the throne of grace with heavy hearts, lifting up your son and this entire situation before the Lord. The pain, confusion, and weight you carry are almost unbearable, and we stand with you in this valley, trusting that God sees every tear and hears every silent cry. This is not the path any parent envisions for their child, and yet here we are, clinging to the hope that only Christ can provide.

First, we must address the gravity of the sin that has taken place. Murder is a grievous offense against God and man, and Scripture is clear: "You shall not murder" (Exodus 20:13 WEB). There is no justification for taking a life, regardless of the victim’s past or the circumstances surrounding the act. While we acknowledge the horror of what the victim was—a known pedophile and predator—we must also recognize that vengeance belongs to the Lord alone (Romans 12:19 WEB). Your son’s actions, though perhaps influenced by unseen forces, were still his own, and he must face the consequences of them. Yet, we also know that God is a God of justice *and* mercy, and we pray that His mercy would temper the justice your son must face.

The revelation of potential mental health struggles adds another layer of complexity to this heartbreak. Scripture tells us that sin has corrupted not only our spirits but our minds and bodies as well (Romans 8:22 WEB). Mental illness is not an excuse for sin, but it can be a factor that distorts judgment, perception, and behavior. We pray that the court would consider this with wisdom and compassion, not as a means to absolve guilt, but as a path toward healing and restoration. Proverbs 16:9 reminds us, "A man’s heart plans his course, but the Lord directs his steps." Even in this, God is sovereign, and we trust that He can bring light into this darkness.

Your son’s backsliding and the influences that led him here are deeply troubling. As believers, we know that the enemy seeks to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10 WEB), and he will exploit every weakness—unresolved pain, absent relationships, unchecked depression, or even the lure of substances—to pull someone away from the Lord. Your son’s baptism and early faith are not lost on God; He is the Good Shepherd who leaves the ninety-nine to seek the one (Luke 15:4 WEB). We pray that the Holy Spirit would convict your son’s heart, draw him back to repentance, and restore him to the faith he once embraced. There is no sin so great that the blood of Jesus cannot cover it, and no heart so hard that God cannot soften it.

The absence of your son’s father in his life is a wound that cannot be ignored. A father’s love—or lack thereof—can leave deep scars, and Scripture warns us of the impact of broken relationships: "Fathers, don’t provoke your children to wrath, but nurture them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord" (Ephesians 6:4 WEB). The neglect and resentment your ex-husband has shown are grievous, but they do not define your son’s worth or future. We pray that God would heal these father wounds and replace them with the perfect love of our Heavenly Father, who promises, "I will be a father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters" (2 Corinthians 6:18 WEB).

For the victim’s family, we also lift up prayers. Their loss is unimaginable, and while we do not know the full circumstances, we ask that God would comfort them in their grief and bring them peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7 WEB). Justice must be served, but we also pray for healing and redemption in their lives.

Now, we come before the Lord together, lifting up these burdens in the name of Jesus Christ, the only name by which we can approach the Father (John 14:6 WEB). There is no other mediator, no other path to salvation, and no other source of hope. Your son’s faith as a child was real, and we pray that the Holy Spirit would fan those embers back into flame. If he has not yet repented of his sins and placed his trust fully in Christ, we pray that he would do so now, for "if we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9 WEB).

Father God, we come before You with hearts broken for this family. We ask for Your mercy to surround this young man, not to excuse his actions, but to lead him to true repentance and restoration. We pray for wisdom for the courts, that they would see the full picture of his mental and spiritual state and respond with justice tempered by compassion. Lord, we ask that You would heal the wounds in his heart—from his father’s absence, from any abuse he may have suffered, from the lies of the enemy that have led him astray. Bring him back to You, Lord, and let him know the depth of Your love and forgiveness.

We pray for this mother, who carries a burden no parent should bear. Strengthen her faith, Lord, and remind her that You are near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18 WEB). Give her peace in the midst of this storm and the assurance that You are working all things together for good, even when the path is dark (Romans 8:28 WEB). We pray for the victim’s family, that You would comfort them and bring them healing in their grief.

Lord, we rebuke every spirit of deception, addiction, and mental illness that has taken hold of this young man. We declare that no weapon formed against him shall prosper (Isaiah 54:17 WEB), and we ask that You would break every chain that binds him. Restore his mind, renew his spirit, and draw him back to You. Let this time of suffering be a turning point, a moment where he surrenders fully to Your will and experiences the transforming power of Your grace.

We ask all these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, the name above every name, the only name by which we are saved. Amen.
