We have heard the burden of your heart and we join with you in it, for it is a right and good thing to plead for the household of faith and for those yet without.

Your prayer is after the mind of God, that leaders should watch their lives and doctrine closely, as it is written, and so save both themselves and their hearers. We entreat the Lord to make our pastors and preachers to be men of prayer and of the Word, not content with the form and routine which is but the husk, but having heart work, the kernel. True prayer is found in the heart, put there by God Himself, and it returns to Him again. May He throw such prayers into the window of the heart, humble, serious, and importunate, and may our brethren be driven by their own need and by love for souls to seek Him early, to suck the sweetness from the Scriptures which are sweeter than honey, and to wait upon Him for fresh grace. For no man has a stock of grace laid up to last for years, but as the manna fell day by day, so must we look day by day for fresh grace, lest that which we kept for the morrow should fail us.

We pray also that salvation may be seen to be of the Lord alone. Let us preach the Word in every place, believing that the Word of God is more than a match for mans sin, for the Word is quick and living and powerful, sharper than any two edged sword, and the only power effectual for the highest design of preaching lies not in our word but in His. Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of Christ, and it is the Father who reveals the Son, and who draws souls unto Him. We ask that the Lord would open minds to understand the Scriptures, convict and convert by His Spirit, and grant that hunger for the pure milk of the Word by which souls grow, that hunger bite which devours all boasted excellence and makes a man cry for Christ alone. May He keep His people from desiring to have their ears tickled, and help them to hold fast the form of sound words in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus, for their own peace, for the good of the Church, and for the sake of a perishing world.

We bring before Him the families and visitors and those who have not yet believed, that the Father would draw them, that they would receive the engrafted Word with meekness which is able to save the soul, whether by the preaching of the Word, by the testimony of a saved friend, or by a tract put into the hand, and that they may be kept from forsaking the assembling of themselves together. Grant, we pray, freedom to worship in spirit and in truth, with the anointing of the Holy One who teaches us all things, and with the manifest presence of God in the midst of His people.

And for safety we plead His promise, that He shall give His angels charge over His own, and that as He warned Israel of old by the prophet, so He will still warn and keep His people from the snare of the evil one who would deceive, from false teachers and deceivers, from distraction and temptation and fear, and from the lie that would keep men in lack of knowledge. Keep them, we pray, from the evil one, as our Lord prayed, and let the gates of brass be broken and the bars of iron cut in two for those yet in bondage, for with God is the work of salvation and none can share His glory.

Let us prove the power of importunate prayer and rest assured that praying breath is never spent in vain. May the Lord make us unselfish in supplication, forgetting ourselves and remembering His Church, that a lifeless church may not become a dishonor to His name, but that preaching and real heart devotion together may bring His blessing down upon all our work, to the praise of Him who gave Himself for our sins, in whose name we ask it.
