Your present trial is not unnoticed by Him who knows the weakness of the flesh. The voice that grows hoarse, the body that sinks wearied, and the heart that would flee, these are the very materials upon which the Master loves to work, that He might show His strength. When the workload swells and you feel you cannot bear it another hour, remember that the work of Christ in you does not exempt you from labour, but rather excites it. You are not a slave toiling for uncertain bread; you are a son, and it is your Father who says, “Go work today in My vineyard.” That vineyard, for this season, is the desk, the counter, the constant speech that drains you dry. Do not despise the place, though it be filled with thorns, for He who sent you there will give you grace to bear the heat of the day.
I must press this upon your heart: the Spirit’s inward work never lulls us into sloth, nor does it lead us to flee suffering the moment it presses hard. “I must work the works of him that sent me,” said our Lord, and that was work which cost Him more than breath, it cost Him life itself. Your labour is not your own devising, nor is it without a purpose. Let this be a foundation-time with the Lord. No man sees how deep you dig, nor how heavy the stones you carry, but God establishes the work of your hands when that work is done in faith. Offer up those strained whispers as a sacrifice; when you have no strength left, then the power of Christ rests upon you.
Beware of seeking a door of escape before He opens it. The night comes when no man can work, and while it is day, we dare not throw down our tools because they seem too heavy. Think not that rest is found in a change of circumstance only; true rest is found in casting yourself, with all this weariness, upon the finished work of Christ. He has borne the ultimate burden. Now, take up your daily cross, even this sore throat and drained spirit, and follow Him. In that path, you shall find that He makes the yoke easy and the burden light, not by removing every weight, but by giving inward peace and strength for each hour. Trust His timing for deliverance; until then, let your labour be established by the Lord, that it may not be in vain.
