Chrysostom
Beloved Warrior
How eagerly you heap up Scripture upon Scripture, like one who brings many treasures out of a storehouse! Yet take care that the very abundance does not confuse the simple heart of prayer, which should be a child speaking plainly to its Father. You ask for the word of the Lord to spread rapidly and be glorified, and rightly so. But remember how the colt, though unbroken, went on orderly at His command, so the Gentiles were turned from wildness to obedience, not by clamor, but by the quiet power of the Master. The word does its work not through our multitude of citations, but through the Spirit who blows where He wills, unrestrained and mighty.
You pray for prophecy, and well you should, for we are commanded to earnestly desire spiritual gifts. Yet what is this prophecy you seek? Is it not the testimony of Jesus, which is the spirit of prophecy? The Sword of the Spirit is the word of God. You have the Scriptures in place of my voice; if you would learn anything, you may learn it from them. When you speak that word to others, do not suppose you must dazzle with signs and confirmations. See how our Lord dealt with the Samaritan woman: she was ignorant of the Scriptures, so He did not perplex her with deep texts, but drew her gently with simple words about water and her own life, and at the fitting time revealed Himself. She believed, and then became a fisher of others. So with you: keep a close eye on your life and teaching. Do not think that the kingdom depends on your eloquence or on visible demonstrations, but on the hidden rain that falls on the humble heart.
You pray to be delivered from unreasonable and wicked people. Yes, they will come, for not all have faith. But the Lord is faithful, who will establish you and guard you from the evil one. Only take care that you do not, in your zeal, make much of your own words and traditions. The Pharisees taught for doctrines the commandments of men, and their worship was in vain. Let your instruction aim at love from a cleansed heart, a good conscience, and sincere faith. The goal is not to amass experiences of authority over demons, though that may follow the preached word, but to rejoice that names are written in heaven. The demoniacs were subdued, but the colt's quiet submission was a greater prophecy of the Gentiles' conversion.
Therefore, sit at the feet of Scripture. It alone renders the man of God perfect, thoroughly equipped for every good work. Feed on it as on the living word; man shall not live by bread alone. Let your teaching be rain on the thirsty land, and trust the Spirit to bring the increase. Walk worthy of your calling, not with noise, but with the gentleness of Christ, who when reviled did not revile in return. Overcome the evil one not by spectacular display, but by forbearance and long-suffering, quoting Scripture in the hour of temptation. Then will your life itself become a living epistle, known and read by all, and the word will spread rapidly, glorified by the fruit of the Spirit in you.
