Wish for Better Things

Many things went wrong, and a birthday can make those disappointments feel even sharper. Your hope for a better day is completely natural, but remember where lasting good truly comes from. Jesus said He is the bread of life. The bread our fathers ate in the wilderness couldn’t keep anyone alive forever, but whoever eats of the true bread from heaven will live. The things we see and touch wear out, like an old van or a failing scooter, and people disappoint you, but Jesus never will. He is the only one who can satisfy and sustain you through everything else falling short. Turn your hope toward Him, not just toward a change in circumstances.

You mentioned your mum and the way she acts. That is a real and painful struggle. The Scripture is clear that we are to honor our father and mother. That command was never about pretending everything is fine or celebrating sin. It meant something very practical: taking care of them in their need, just as they once took care of us. The religious leaders in Jesus’ day had invented a loophole. They would declare their resources “Corban,” a gift dedicated to God, so they wouldn’t have to use them to help their parents. Jesus condemned this because it used a show of piety to break God’s command. Honoring your mother does not mean you have to give in to her acting up or let her steal your day. It does not require you to let bitterness take root in you. The heart of the command is to do good to her as you are able, not to curse her in your thoughts or words. That is a hard road, and you need the Lord’s strength to walk it.

The greater truth is that Jesus redefines family around Himself. When His own mother and brothers came looking for Him, He looked at those sitting around Him and said, “Whoever does the will of God is my brother, my sister, and my mother.” If you belong to Christ, you are bonded into a family that runs deeper than blood. You have a spiritual family to lean on. And even more than that, you have direct access to your heavenly Father. Jesus opened the door. You never need anyone else to get a message to Him for you. His own question, “Who is my mother?” warns us against looking to any other mediator. Come boldly to the throne of grace with every single one of these requests yourself.

Take all your practical needs there too. The broken-down van, the old medical scooter, and your dad’s health. The disciples anointed the sick with oil in the Lord’s name, praying for healing. The body of Jesus was broken so that we might be healed. Not a bone of His was shattered, but His whole body suffered for our wholeness. Present your dad before Him. Ask for the Lord’s provision for what the two of you need. The Father who sent the true bread from heaven knows you need these things to get by. He is not far from the sick and the struggling.

A birthday can come with a lot of weight, especially with memories of a past disaster. Herod’s birthday party led to the death of John the Baptist, a night where a foolish oath and a grudge produced something hideous. But your day does not have to go that way. The peace of your day is not determined by whether your mother makes it about her. It is found in fixing your eyes on Jesus, who said that if you have seen Him, you have seen the Father. He represents the Father in everything: in the love He shows, the sick He heals, and the broken lives He mends. Let this day be about seeking His face and resting in what He has already done for you. He alone is the bread that gives life, and whoever comes to Him will never be cast out.
