The cry of your heart echoes the apostle’s own prayer, and it is a prayer that cannot fall unanswered to the ground, for it is after the very mind of the Spirit. You ask for wisdom and revelation to know God, the hope of His calling, the riches of His glorious inheritance, and the surpassing greatness of His power. These are not scattered jewels to be sought in distant fields, but treasures hid in one place, Christ Jesus himself, who is made unto us wisdom from God. To know Him is to know the Father, for He that hath seen Him hath seen the Father. The Spirit of wisdom and revelation opens the eyes not to a new light beyond the cross, but to the light that blazes from it, showing Christ as the power of God and the wisdom of God. In His complex person, God and man, the whole counsel of God is made visible, and the riches of divine love are poured out upon those who are sanctified. You need not climb to heaven to bring Him down, nor descend into the deep to bring Him up; the word is nigh thee, in thy mouth and in thy heart, which is the word of faith we preach.
The hope of His calling is not a trembling wish, but a confident expectation anchored within the veil, where our Forerunner has entered. It is a hope laid hold of by a faith that overcomes the world, a hope that purifies the soul, a hope that springs from the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. For His rising again is the seal and evidence that the calling is effectual, the inheritance sure, and the power all-sufficient. The resurrection of Christ casts a sidelight upon the gospel; it proves its reality and literalness. If Christ be not raised, your faith is vain, and your hope a mockery. But now is Christ risen, and the hope that maketh not ashamed is yours, the hope of being with Him, of being like Him, of reigning with Him, for He is the head of His body, the church, the fullness of Him that filleth all in all. This is the hope of His calling, and it is a hope that cannot fail.
The riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, here language labors to express what infinity alone can contain. The inheritance is not primarily what you receive, though eye hath not seen that; it is the saints themselves as God’s own portion. He counts His people His inheritance, and the glory of it passes knowledge. If you are His, then you are hid with Christ in God, and when Christ who is our life shall appear, then shall you also appear with Him in glory. The riches of this inheritance are measured by the worth of the Lamb that was slain, by the blood that purchased it, by the love that planned it from before the foundation of the world. He that trusteth in the Lord is happy, for he is made an heir of God and a joint-heir with Jesus Christ. This is not the portion of the crafty politician who leans on his own understanding, but of the simple believer who rests on the faithful promise. True wisdom is to trust, and in trusting, to possess all that God has given to the Son.
And what is the exceeding greatness of His power to us-ward who believe? It is no stagnant force, no distant reservoir, but the very power that raised Jesus from the dead and set Him at God’s right hand. That same power is now working in you who believe, quickening your deadness, subduing your iniquities, and transforming you into His likeness. The first resurrection within the soul is the pledge that the second death hath no power over you. This is the power that evidences your justification, consoles your heart in affliction, and gives life to your mortal spirit. It is the power of God, not of man, not of human will or fleshly energy, but the exceeding greatness of His power, exercised in Christ when He raised Him from the dead. As surely as the stone was rolled away from that garden tomb, so surely shall every stone of doubt, fear, and sin be rolled from your path. The Lord working with you is the secret of all holy living and victorious dying.
The throne of God and of the Lamb is in the church, in the heart, in heaven itself. There Jesus reigns, far above all principality and power, and there you reign with Him even now by faith. When you draw near in prayer, you exercise a power with God that is not your own, but is the fruit of His indwelling. The man who has power with God must be safe, happy, holy. This power is wielded not by physical might, nor by commanding tones, but by a trusting, pleading faith that takes hold of the covenant and will not let go. Wrestle with the angel of the covenant, and though your sinew shrink, you shall prevail and be called Israel, a prince with God. Only believe, and you shall see the glory of God.
