Where do I start to get my life in order ?

Anonymous

Beloved of All
I’d like to get my life in order and I don’t know where to start. What does seeking righteousness and his kingdom mean concretely

We hear the longing in your heart to get your life in order and we join with you in seeking God's wisdom and direction for this, for we know that true order does not begin with trying harder but with putting first things first.

You asked what it means concretely to seek His kingdom and His righteousness and Jesus answers this directly when He says, But seek first God’s Kingdom and his righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well Matt 6:33. To seek His Kingdom concretely means to make God's reign and will the highest priority in every area of your life, to desire that He would be Lord over your thoughts, decisions, time, work, money and relationships. To seek His righteousness means two things together, first to receive the righteousness that only Jesus can give, and then to live in a way that reflects His righteous character through obedience.

We want to gently point out that order begins with being made right with God through Jesus Christ, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God Rom 3:23 and the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord Rom 6:23. There is no other way to come to the Father except through Jesus, for Jesus said I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me John 14:6 and there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved Acts 4:12. If you have not yet fully surrendered your life to Him, that is where order begins, by confessing your sin, believing that Jesus died and rose again for you, and trusting Him as Savior and Lord. He will give you His righteousness, for Him who knew no sin he made to be sin on our behalf so that in him we might become the righteousness of God 2 Cor 5:21.

Concretely, seeking His Kingdom and righteousness then becomes a daily walk. We start each day by drawing near to God through prayer and His Word, for Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path Psalm 119:105 and when we draw near to God, he will draw near to you James 4:8. We learn to trust in the Lord with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight Prov 3:5-6. This means bringing every decision before Him, confessing sin quickly and receiving His forgiveness, for If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness 1 John 1:9. It means being transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God Rom 12:2 by reading Scripture daily, obeying what it says, and gathering faithfully with other believers in a Bible believing church where you can be taught, encouraged and held accountable.

From that foundation, order flows outward into practical stewardship. We bring our time, finances, work, body and relationships under His Lordship, doing all things as unto Him, for Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men Col 3:23, handling money with honesty and diligence, caring for our bodies as temples of the Holy Spirit, and setting aside time for rest, work and service in a balanced way. It is not about perfection in one moment but about daily faithfulness in small things as He leads.

We pray together for you now.

Father, we lift up this dear one who desires to get life in order before You. We thank You that You see this desire and that You promise to give wisdom to those who ask. We pray that You would draw this heart fully to Jesus, that there would be repentance, faith and new life in Him, and that Your righteousness would be received as a free gift. Teach us all to seek Your Kingdom first each morning, to love Your Word, to walk in obedience, to confess sin quickly and to walk in Your grace. Lead this life into order, not by striving in the flesh but by surrender to Your Spirit, and establish every step according to Your will. Bring godly fellowship, clarity and peace, and help to be faithful in the daily practical duties You have given. We ask this in the name of Jesus our Lord and Savior, amen.

We hear you in this, wanting to get your life in order is a good desire, and feeling unsure where to begin is very normal.

Seeking His kingdom and righteousness isn't abstract. Concretely it means letting God set the agenda for your days, not just fitting Him in around everything else. It's a shift from asking "what do I want to make happen?" to "what is God inviting me to do faithfully right here, today?" That often looks like small, consistent choices more than one big overhaul.

When everything feels tangled, it can help to get clear before you try to fix everything at once. This week, try setting aside 20 quiet minutes with a notebook and honestly asking: What do I actually want to see change? What am I currently doing to get there? What is helping and what isn't? And what is one small thing I could think or do differently?

From there, choose just one simple rhythm to put God first daily. For many people that is a short time to pray and read Scripture in the morning, being honest with God, and then trying to live out what you hear, at work, with money, in relationships. As that steadies, you can add the next step. Growth tends to come through these small, faithful objectives over time, not all at once.

Father, we lift up our friend to You. You see the desire to live well and to honor You. Give clarity for the next step, strength to take it, and peace in knowing You are leading day by day. Guide and steady this life in Your will. In Jesus' name, amen.

You ask where to begin to get your life in order, and what it means concretely to seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness. The question itself shows a right understanding, for order reigns throughout the whole of God's world, and after this fashion there should be order and arrangement in the Christian life. Your thoughts, graces and actions ought all to keep their proper position.

The first thing to be done is to get into order with God. If you are out of order with God there is no help for it, and your destruction is certain if you remain opposed to Him. He tells you the way to get into order, and that way is to be reconciled unto God by the death of His Son. Do not try to put the outward affairs of life in order while your soul is still at enmity with its King. Only be reconciled, and then you will in time wonder that there should have been such order in your life when you thought it was all confusion.

This brings us to what it means to seek His righteousness. Our Lord Jesus Christ is first King of righteousness, and after that King of peace. He knew He could not be King of peace to us till first of all He had woven a perfect righteousness in the loom of His life and dyed it in His own heart's blood in His death. You who are in Him are righteous in His righteousness. Do not seek to establish a righteousness of your own, for the plea of self righteousness contradicts itself. The only righteousness a man can claim for himself is a partial and comparative righteousness, which is itself an admission that he is not perfect and has sinned. One of the first signs of a renewed heart is that it abhors itself and rests wholly upon the righteousness which Christ has wrought.

To seek the Kingdom concretely, then, is first to enter that Kingdom by faith in Christ, the Kingdom of the new life, of union to Christ, of the power of the Spirit of God. Our Lord puts the blessings in order, first life through believing on Him, and then food to sustain that life. It is impossible for a dead man to feed, only the living can eat and drink. We do not give food to make men live, but because they are alive they take food to nourish the life already in them. So first believe on Him and you have everlasting life, and then feed upon Him who is the bread of life.

When that life is yours, seeking the Kingdom first takes a very practical shape.

Seek it first in order of time. Give God the first few minutes of every opening morning. Always begin your day with God before business or pleasure claims you. Seek it first in the week by being observant of the first day of the week and giving it all to God.

Seek it first in order of preference. If wealth and righteousness run counter to each other, let the gold perish and hold fast to righteousness. Follow Christ however dear it costs you.

Seek it first by giving to true religion a sovereignty over your life. The helm by which life is steered should be in the hands of God. To glorify God and promote righteousness should be your master passion. This is to make the first objective of all that you do the glory of God and the extension of the Redeemer's Kingdom.

When a man lives for God and for eternal life in this way, he will get all the things he needs without anxiously seeking for them, for it is promised that all these things shall be added unto you. Be patient and wait upon Him with childlike confidence, and keep to this one aim, to do the right as He enables you, and your life shall be the best life for you when considered in the light of eternity.
