Habakkuk 3:17 :
Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls,

A Prayer Based on Habakkuk 3:17:
Our prayer:
Heavenly Father, right now, we come to You acknowledging that life can be hard and dry. Sometimes the things we hoped for do not happen, and the resources we depend on seem to fail.
When life feels empty like a barren field or an empty barn, help us to look past our changing circumstances. Give us the strength of faith that the prophet Habakkuk had.
Even when things are difficult, yet we will rejoice in You.
When answers are slow and the path is unclear, we will take joy in God our Savior.
Remind us that our true joy does not come from what we possess or how comfortable our life is. Our joy comes from You. You are our strength, our provider, and the anchor of our soul.
In Jesus' name, we pray.
Amen.

We join you in this beautiful prayer from Habakkuk and we are deeply encouraged by your heart to look past changing circumstances to the unchanging God.

You have quoted Habakkuk 3:17 so faithfully, For though the fig tree doesn’t flourish, nor fruit be in the vines; the labor of the olive fails, the fields yield no food; the flocks are cut off from the fold, and there is no herd in the stalls Habakkuk 3:17. What a picture of emptiness, like a barren field and an empty barn, when everything we might depend on for security and provision seems to fail. Yet the prophet does not end there, and neither do we. We cling with you to what follows, yet I will rejoice in Yahweh. I will be joyful in the God of my salvation Habakkuk 3:18. Our joy is not rooted in the harvest, in our possessions, or in how comfortable life feels, but in the Lord Himself who never changes.

We love how you have called Jesus the Bread of Heaven and the Word of Life, for He truly is. Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will not be hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty John 6:35. When the fields produce no food, Christ Himself sustains us. He is the living Word, In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God John 1:1, and The Word became flesh, and lived among us John 1:14. And we remember that Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God Matthew 4:4. When answers are slow and the path is unclear, His Word still feeds us, strengthens us, and anchors our soul.

We also take comfort that in those dry seasons God exchanges our weakness for His strength. He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might Isaiah 40:29. Yahweh, the Lord, is my strength. He makes my feet like deer’s feet, and enables me to tread on my high places Habakkuk 3:19. Even when our hearts feel empty, My flesh and my heart fails, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever Psalm 73:26. We can do all things through Christ, who strengthens us Philippians 4:13, not because circumstances improve, but because He indwells us.

So we pray together with you now.

Heavenly Father, we come before You together and thank You that You see every barren place in our lives. When life feels empty and dry, when what we hoped for does not come to pass and resources fail, help us to lift our eyes past our circumstances to You. Give us the strength of faith that Habakkuk had, to choose rejoicing even in hardship, to take joy in You, God our Savior. Remind us daily that our true joy and security are not in what we possess but in who You are. You are our provider, our strength, and the anchor of our soul. Feed us with Jesus, the Bread of Heaven and the living Word of Life, so that we hunger no more and thirst no more. Make our feet like deer’s feet to walk on high places with You, even while the valley still looks barren. Sustain us by every word that proceeds from Your mouth and teach us to rejoice in You alone. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

We appreciated your prayer about the barren field and the empty barn. That image stays with us because it names what many of us feel but struggle to put into words, when what we hoped for has not come and what we counted on seems thin.

What helped us as we read your words was remembering that faith is not about feeling full, it is a steady confidence in how trustworthy Christ is, even when our emotions and circumstances shift. The field may still look empty for a season, and faith does not deny that. It simply looks past the field to the One who does not change.

If that emptiness feels close right now, one small practice that has steadied us is to begin the day by turning to Jesus as our Bread and our Word of Life before we check what is or is not in the barn. Even a few quiet minutes listening for his voice helps recenter our hearts on his presence rather than on what is missing.

Father, we thank You that You see this barren season and You remain our strength and provider. Teach us to find our joy in You alone, to rejoice even while we wait, and to rest in Jesus our Bread of Heaven. Hold us close and keep our eyes on You today. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your prayer lays hold upon the very marrow of the prophet's faith, and it is well that it should be so. Though the fig tree should not blossom and there be no fruit upon the vine, though the labour of the olive should fail and the field yield no meat, yet the man of God says, I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation.

You have asked rightly that when life feels as a barren field or an empty barn we may look past changing circumstances. All these outward comforts are as honey of which a man may soon eat till he is sickened, and we are forbidden to set our chief joy upon them, for riches take to themselves wings and fly away. The joy which God commands is a joy in which it is impossible to go too far, for it is to rejoice evermore in the Lord Himself. You have plenty to do, and many trials to pass through, but this thing you have always to do, to rejoice in Him.

This is the rejoicing to which our Saviour points when He says, rejoice not that the spirits are subject unto you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven. If your name is written there through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, who alone is able to save unto the uttermost them that come unto God by Him, then your anchor holds though every earthly stay gives way. Heaven is yours in the future and earth is yours in the present, since all things are yours in Christ.

Such joy springs from faith, and faith comes by hearing the Word of Life. God has spoken in His holiness, and therefore we will rejoice. The Bread of Heaven, the living Word, even Jesus Christ, has been given for the nourishment of your soul. Believe, and as you believe this and that out of the ten thousand blessings which God has promised in Him, joy will spring up within you. If your heart were right you would rejoice in the Lord, and when you find you are not rejoicing you must resort to the great Physician and awaken faith to its most active exercise. It is grand faith that can rejoice in God when friends go as the swallows fly away in the autumn and when every visible comfort fails.

May the Lord increase your faith. He who has begun the good work will perfect that which concerneth you. There is no strength in human nature that shall ever suffice to raise a soul to heaven, but the Lord will perfect His own. Trust Him not only for salvation from sin, but for strength in this present barren season, believing that He is able to do this thing for you which He has done for many who are now rejoicing in His salvation.

Let us pray together. O Lord our God, Thou hast spoken and Thy Word faileth not. In the day of empty barns and barren fields, be Thou our fulness. Forgive our sins through the blood of Jesus Christ Thy Son, our only Saviour, and write our names in heaven by Thy grace. Give us faith to look beyond what we possess or how comfortable our life may be, and to take our joy in Thee. Thou art our strength, our provider, and the anchor of our soul. Feed us with the Bread of Heaven, and cause us yet to rejoice in the God of our salvation. In the name of Jesus Christ we ask it. Amen.
