What message do I need to hear?

We hear your heart in asking what message you need to hear and we want to gently but truthfully address the thought that you should trust yourself because you already know which direction brings you peace.

We love you enough to tell you that trusting yourself above God is not the message God wants you to hear, and it will not lead you to lasting peace. Scripture warns us about this very clearly. Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight Proverbs 3:5-6. The heart is deceitful above all things, and it is exceedingly corrupt: who can know it Jeremiah 17:9. One who trusts in himself is a fool Proverbs 28:26. Our own feelings and understanding can shift with circumstances, but God’s wisdom never fails.

We understand the desire for peace and for clarity about direction, and God does want to give you peace, but true peace does not come from following our own inner voice. It comes from trusting and following Him. You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you Isaiah 26:3. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus Philippians 4:7. Jesus Himself said Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, give I to you. Don’t let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful John 14:27.

The direction that brings real peace is the direction that aligns with God’s will as revealed in His Word, not simply what feels peaceful in the moment. Feelings can be misleading, but God’s Word is a lamp to our feet. We encourage you to bring your decision before the Lord in prayer, to seek His counsel in Scripture, and to ask Him to make your path clear as you surrender your own understanding to Him.

We also notice your request did not mention Jesus, and we want to lovingly remind you that it is only through Jesus that we have access to God and can truly hear from Him. Jesus said I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me John 14:6. There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved Acts 4:12. If you have not already, we encourage you to put your trust in Jesus Christ, believing that He died for your sins and rose again, and to call upon His name. It is through Him that we can know forgiveness, guidance, and the peace that you are longing for.

We pray together for you now.

Father in heaven, we lift this dear one to You in the name of Jesus Christ. We ask that You forgive us for the times we have trusted ourselves instead of trusting You. Lord, we ask that You reveal Yourself more clearly to this heart that is seeking direction and peace. Replace self reliance with full reliance on You. Guard this mind and heart with Your perfect peace as trust is placed in You. Give wisdom to discern Your will, open the eyes to see the path You have made straight, and give courage to follow You even when it is not the easiest way. Draw this dear one closer to Jesus, that they may know Him as Savior and Lord and find true peace that only He can give. We ask this in Jesus’ name, amen.

We encourage you to continue seeking Him daily in prayer and in reading His Word, and to test every direction by whether it honors God and aligns with Scripture. As you trust Him and not yourself, He will faithfully lead you.

We're glad you reached out with that honest question about which way brings peace. Wanting a settled, peaceful direction makes sense, especially when decisions feel heavy.

We hear you noticing an inner sense of where peace might lie. In our walk with Christ we've learned that sense is worth paying attention to, and also worth bringing before the Lord to test and shape. Peace can be a helpful signal, and it grows steadier when we invite God into the process, ask for wisdom, and listen for His leading alongside wise counsel from people who know us well.

A next step that many find grounding is to name the options plainly. You could write down the two directions you're considering, and beside each note what you imagine peace would actually look like day to day, what responsibilities and relationships are involved, and what you sense God might be inviting you toward as you pray. Then share those notes with one trusted, mature believer who can listen and pray with you, not to decide for you but to help you hear more clearly.

Father, we lift this friend to You. You know the decision weighing on them and the longing for peace. Give them quiet to hear Your voice, wisdom to weigh each path, and the confidence that You are near as they seek You. Guide their steps and guard their heart as they trust You day by day. In Jesus' name, amen.

Peace is indeed a precious thing to seek, and the longing for it in your heart is not wrong. Yet the message you most need to hear is not to trust yourself, but to trust the God of peace.

Scripture tells us He is the God of peace because He created peace originally, He restores it when sin has broken it, He preserves it, and He will perfect it at last. That peace is not found within ourselves. There is a peace which is worse than worthless, a false peace which Satan, the cunning ape of God, would give you. Of that false peace it is written, There is no peace, saith my God, to the wicked. If a man must forget God to have peace, or if remembering God troubles his peace, that peace is but writing upon the sand. It has no foundation.

True peace is of another kind. Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. This is peace with God first, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, and then a consequent peace in the little kingdom within. The peace of God which passeth all understanding is not worked up by trusting our own heart or our own sense of direction, for the heart is deceitful and our own understanding is a poor guide. It is given when we look to the Son of God pouring out His life and trust Him, for then sins are gone in a moment and the soul is at rest because it is at peace with its Father.

You say you already know which direction brings you peace. I would lovingly ask you to test that peace. Is it a peace that comes from being made right with God through faith in Jesus Christ alone, or is it a calm that depends upon following your own will apart from His Word? God guides His people first by the general directions of His Word, and by principles of holiness, humility and submission to His will, not by an inner feeling that we should simply follow ourselves. To know the will of Jesus and to do it is to abide in the peace of God.

Do not trust yourself to finish what only God can complete. Where God begins a work He completes it, but He never asks you to be your own saviour or your own guide. Take God at His Word. If He says He will save you if you trust in Christ, then trusting Him, He will save you. Bring your ways honestly before Him as the Psalmist did, saying I have declared my ways and Thou heardest me, teach me Thy statutes. Hide nothing, confess all, and ask Him to teach you and lead you.

May the God of peace, who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, make you holy and keep you in perfect peace as your mind is stayed upon Him, not upon yourself. Cast your burden upon Christ, trust Him fully, and you will find a peace that is solid and abiding, founded upon eternal truth and guaranteed by the God of holiness, a peace which no sorrow and no enemy can take away.

Lord Jesus please richly bless, protect and guide them. Please help them in accordance with your perfect will Father. Thank you and praise you. In your holy name I pray. Amen.
