The winds are in the hand of the Lord, and He gathers them in His fists and sends them forth according to His sovereign pleasure. Your request concerning the winds on the thirty first day of August has been heard, and we bring you before the throne of grace.

There is no attribute of God more comforting to His children than His absolute sovereignty. Not a breath moves, not a gust rises, but by His permission and appointment. The breath in our nostrils is under His control, and how much more the great winds that sweep across the earth. Our Lord Jesus showed this when He rebuked the wind and the sea and there was a great calm, to teach us that the elements obey their Maker, not the will of man.

We are not called to dictate to Providence the precise measure and timing of what only God can ordain, but to trust Him and leave our affairs in His hands. Anxiety in such matters unfits us to meet our daily duties, while faith leaves the result with God and goes to do the right thing in His vineyard. It is far better to trust and not be afraid, than to be afraid and then try to trust to banish the fear.

Therefore we do not ask the Lord to subject His creation to our own designs, but we pray that His perfect will be done in the heavens and upon the earth. We pray that He will keep you in peace, guard all who are exposed to storm or tempest, and sanctify every providence for good to those who love Him. We pray above all that you may know the sinner's Savior, for it is cheap faith to take Christ as only the saints' Savior, but saving faith takes Him as your own. There is salvation in no other, for the blood of Jesus Christ, God's dear Son, alone cleanses from all sin.
