Your cry in this season of loss and distress has been heard, and it is taken before the throne of grace with earnestness and care. To have money and papers stolen, to feel pressed and opposed in your workplace, and to fear the dark workings of evil, is a heavy affliction, and the Lord knows the weight of it.
Yet in your prayer you have asked that God would deal with others according to strict justice, that scourges and death and shedding of blood would fall upon those who have wronged you, and that they would be made your footstool. Hear with me what the Scriptures and the faithful preaching of the gospel teach concerning such a plea.
No man can stand before God and appeal to mere justice for another, for justice would condemn us all. As it has been truly said, you will never make out a good case if you appeal to God's justice, for justice will try you, condemn you, and cast you aside. Our only hope is to cry, Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness, according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies. If the Lord should deal with us as our sins deserve, none could stand. We live because justice has been satisfied elsewhere, not in our own vindication, but at the cross.
When justice came forth to punish sin, it fell not upon the sinner who trusts in Christ, but upon the Saviour Himself. The cloud of justice was charged with fiery hail, and it fell into the Saviour's heart. In Gethsemane and upon the cross, His soul agonies and His dislocated bones and His blood poured out satisfied the claims of a holy God, so that God can be just and yet the justifier of him that believeth in Jesus. To ask that justice should now pour out unmeasured vengeance upon others is to forget that we ourselves need that same mercy every hour.
The Lord is indeed just, and He will not at all acquit the wicked, and His justice demands that sin be punished unless men turn to Him with full purpose of heart. Yet He is slow to anger. The lictor of divine justice carries his axe bound up in rods, for He reproves that men may repent. Vengeance belongs to Him alone, and He has said, Vengeance is mine, I will repay. Our calling is not to call down death upon flesh and blood, for we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities and powers and spiritual wickedness. The enemies we are to oppose are the works of darkness themselves, and the victory over them is in Christ.
Even Peter, who denied his Lord with oaths and curses, was not destroyed but restored. The Lord had prayed for him, and a look from Christ broke his heart and brought him to repentance, and afterwards with many tears he went out and was restored to feed the sheep. So we are taught to pray for the restoration of those who have fallen, and for our own restoration when we have been wronged or tempted to bitterness. The joy of restoration is greater than the satisfaction of revenge.
Therefore we cannot join you in asking God to plague men unto death or to shed their blood as water, nor to make any man your footstool in that sense. To pray so would be to ask God to act against His own merciful character and against the command of Christ who said, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you.
We will pray with you and for you in this way, according to Scripture:
That the Lord, who sees all theft and oppression, would protect you, provide for you, and in His providence restore what has been taken, whether by just recompense or by His own gracious provision, and that He would guard your identity and your livelihood from further harm.
That He would deliver your workplace from every evil influence, that every fetish and work of darkness would be brought to nothing, not by our cursing but by the light and power of Christ, who has triumphed over all the kingdom of darkness.
That He would execute true justice in His own holy way, restraining evil, bringing wrongdoers to account through lawful means where fitting, and above all bringing them to repentance, that they might be saved rather than destroyed.
That He would keep your own heart from bitterness and from the desire for revenge, and clothe you with mercy, patience, and faith, that you may overcome evil with good and be strengthened to strengthen others.
If theft has occurred, seek also the proper and lawful help for protection of your cards and money, and walk in integrity and prayer in your workplace, putting on the whole armour of God, with truth, righteousness, faith, and the word of God.
May the Lord turn your trial into a testimony of His mercy. Cling to the mercy seat when you feel most wronged, for there justice has already been satisfied for all who trust in the blood of Jesus, and from that mercy seat He will give you grace to endure, to forgive, and to be kept in perfect peace.
