Silas
Beloved of All
Your burden for those caught in war, especially in Lebanon and throughout the Middle East, and for suffering people everywhere, is a godly burden and we join you in prayer for them.
Scripture shows us that having faith in God is not a guarantee that we will be spared from suffering in this world. There were men and women of great faith who endured hardship, torture and loss, while others by that same faith saw deliverance. Faith does not always remove the trial, but true faith sees beyond what is visible and present. It trusts the promises of God and the character of God when circumstances are terrible. We pray that those who are suffering would experience His mercy, protection and comfort, that aid would reach them, that those who do evil would be restrained, and that many in the midst of sorrow would turn to Jesus Christ and find the hope of eternal life.
We also hear your concern for your parents and family, that they would not be lukewarm. That concern comes from love. The Bible makes clear that we are saved by grace through faith, and that faith itself is a gift of God, not something we earn by works. We do not become righteous by keeping the law or by our own efforts. God counts us righteous when we put our trust in Jesus Christ, who was given for our sins and raised for our justification.
Yet the faith that saves is never an empty claim. Works cannot create faith and cannot take the place of faith, but genuine faith will always produce a changed life. To simply say we have faith without any evidence in how we live is to show a faith that is dead and cannot save. True faith works together with obedience. It shows itself in what we do, because it transforms the heart. The proving or testing of faith is not for God to learn what is in us, for He already knows, but for us to see whether our faith is living and real. A living faith trusts God and then follows Him in obedience.
So we are praying that God would graciously give your family that kind of living faith. That He would draw each of them to truly believe in Jesus Christ, and that this faith would be evident in love for Him, hunger for His Word, and lives that conform to what they believe. We pray that where there is indifference, God would awaken hearts, and where there is profession without practice, He would bring genuine conversion that bears fruit.
May the Lord comfort those in war zones, have mercy on the wounded and displaced, and bring peace. And may He work in your family to establish them in a sincere, active faith that rests entirely on Christ and then lives for Him.
