Your cry for help is heard, and the tension you describe is very real, to have chosen not to take part while your own mother did take part in breaking in, and now to wonder what more she could have done and what you should have done.

Guilt is a weight that does not go away by hiding it or explaining it away. When we try to cover a wrong, we remain conscious of it, it stays before us, and we cannot run from it. The way God meets that weight is not through our justifying ourselves but through our honestly acknowledging what was done before Him. Scripture says though your sins are as scarlet they shall be as white as snow, and when God forgives He forgives completely and totally, not halfway. That is different from how we often forgive one another, and because we imagine God to be like us we struggle to believe His forgiveness is complete.

God has made only one provision for the putting away of sin and guilt, and that is through His Son Jesus Christ. The Spirit bears witness to this truth. Forgiveness is not found by trying to punish ourselves or by hoping that being punished will make the guilt go away. Many people carry a hidden desire to be punished so the guilt will lift, but relief does not come that way. It comes when we confess our sin to God and receive the cleansing He provides through Jesus. Then the heavy hand that was upon us is lifted and joy can return, even while consequences in this life may still remain.

In your situation you are also carrying something about family. You made one choice and your mother made another, and that creates a painful division. Jesus Himself showed what this means when He was told His mother and brothers were outside seeking Him and He answered, who is my mother and who are my brothers, and then looked at those who were doing the will of God and said they are His mother and brother and sister. He was not dishonoring His mother, but He was teaching that there is a bond in the family of God that is deeper than the bond of blood when our blood family is not walking with God. When you follow Jesus, you come into a new family with ties that are deeper, and sometimes that very faithfulness creates distance from those closest to you.

That also means you do not need to go through your mother, or through Mary the mother of Jesus, or through any other person to reach God for help. Nowhere does Scripture encourage us to seek Mary to gain favor from her Son. Jesus has opened the way Himself, so you can come boldly directly to the throne of grace through Him. Bring your own heart before Him, confess what is yours to confess, and bring your mother before Him in prayer as well, asking Him to work in her heart.

Your love for Jesus must be first, even before love for family, not in hatred for family but in a greater loyalty to Him. That is hard when family is involved in wrongdoing. You are not responsible for your mother's decision, and you cannot make her choices for her. What you are responsible for is to walk honestly before God yourself, to not join in what is wrong, to speak the truth in love, and to trust God with both your guilt and your concern for her.

If there is a wrong that still needs to be made right, such as damage or taking what was not yours in that breaking in, bring that into the light before God and take the honest steps He shows you. Do not try to atone by carrying endless guilt. Acknowledge your part, receive His full forgiveness through Jesus, and let Him carry what you cannot carry. Pray for your mother that she too will see her need and turn to the same forgiveness.
