Proverbs 29:18 says "Where there is no vision, the people perish:..." Please pray that I receive visions from God in Jesus' name, so that I don't just follow my own personal goals.


Heavenly Father, we thank you that you do not change like shifting shadows. You fulfil the visions you give us. Hallelujah!

It is written „Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

We join with you in this desire to not simply follow your own personal goals but to walk in the revelation and purpose that God has for your life, and we thank God for your heart that wants to be led by Him.

We love that you quoted Proverbs 29:18, and we want to share how it reads in the World English Bible, Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint; but one who keeps the law is blessed. Proverbs 29:18. The vision spoken of there is not merely personal ambition or a plan for success, but the revealed word and counsel of God. Without His revelation we do cast off restraint and wander, but when we keep His law and walk in His light we are blessed. This is why your prayer is so beautiful, you are asking not for your own dreams to be blessed, but for His dreams for you to be revealed.

We also rejoice with you in the truth you quoted, Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation, nor turning shadow. James 1:17. Our Father does not change like shifting shadows, and what He reveals He is faithful to fulfill, though we must wait for it. For the vision is yet for the appointed time, and it hurries toward the end, and won't prove false. Though it takes time, wait for it; because it will surely come. It won't delay. Habakkuk 2:3. We also remember the promise, It will be in the last days, says God, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh. Your sons and your daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions. Your old men will dream dreams. Acts 2:17. God does still speak, and He does give vision, but we gently encourage you to seek the Giver more than the gift, and to test every vision or impression against Scripture, for His written Word is our sure foundation and lamp. Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path. Psalm 119:105. Any true vision from God will never contradict His Word, and it will always draw you closer to Jesus Christ and to holiness.

We must also lovingly encourage you to surrender your own personal goals fully to Him. A man's heart plans his course, but Yahweh directs his steps. Proverbs 16:9. And we are called to Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don't lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6. The vision God gives is not to make our name great, but to make His name known and to conform us to Christ.

Heavenly Father, we thank You that You are the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or turning shadow, and that every good and perfect gift comes from Your hand. We thank You for this dear one who does not want to perish for lack of revelation but longs to be led by You. In the name of Jesus Christ we ask that You pour out Your Spirit upon him and grant him clear revelation of Your will. Give him visions and dreams as it pleases You, but above all give him a deep love for Your Word and an ear to hear Your voice. Reveal Your plans for his life, for we know Your thoughts toward us are thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11. Help him to wait patiently for the appointed time and to walk in obedience to what You have already shown him in Scripture. Guard him from deception and from following his own understanding, and make his paths straight as he acknowledges You in all his ways. Fulfill the vision You give him for Your glory, that his life would bear fruit and point others to Jesus. We appreciate you sharing this desire to follow God's leading rather than just your own plans. That hunger to be guided by Him is a good and humble place to be.

We have found it helpful to think about vision not as chasing a dramatic picture, but as a steady sense of God's calling that shapes our daily choices. There is a difference between a fantasy we create to solve things quickly for ourselves, and a vision God forms in us that gives direction and a growing appetite for what matters to Him. That kind of vision usually grows quietly as we stay close to Him and walk faithfully in what we already know is His will.

One simple practice that helps many people is to keep a regular, unhurried time in Scripture and prayer focused on listening as well as asking. As you read and pray, you might pause and ask the Lord to show you more of His character and how He would have you live that out in the responsibilities already in front of you. Jotting down what you sense and talking it through with a trusted pastor or mature believer can bring clarity over time and keep you from carrying it alone.

Father, we thank You for the heart that wants to follow You. We ask You to give wisdom and quiet confidence in seeking You, to align desires with Your purposes, and to make the next steps clear in everyday faithfulness. Lead and keep this dear one close to You. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your longing not to follow your own personal goals but to be led by the Lord is itself a gracious work, for naturally we do not like being guided, yet grace dethrones obstinacy and gives us acquiescence in the divine will.

You quote rightly that where there is no vision the people perish, but that vision is not a new dream or private revelation apart from Scripture. The word there is the revealed counsel of God, His Word made known to His people. Give me but a Word out of God's mouth and I can live upon it, but all the words out of man's mouth apart from divine inspiration are as unsatisfying food as if men tried to live on stones. We have that sure Word, and it is by that Word we are to be guided.

Do not seek after visions that come through a slight aperture in a cracked brain, to which we pay no sort of attention. There are many who claim such revelations, not from God's Word, but from their own imagination. The Lord's way of guidance now is first to be guided by the general directions given in God's Word, and then by the great principles infused in every man who takes God for his Guide, to avoid everything that is evil and to bow with submission to the will of God. By that very fact we are furnished with unerring guidance.

Remember also that God's purpose is infallible and unchanging. With Him is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. The whole was written from the beginning, He knew everything of it, He has never altered a single sentence nor changed a single line of the divine purpose. You and I are but waves of His great sea, yet His sea moves on to its appointed end. It is not for us to invent a course and ask God to bless it, but to submit our will to His will, that His purpose may stand in us.

Therefore I would pray for you not that you might have fanciful visions, but that the eyes of your understanding might be enlightened to see the wondrous works of God already revealed, and to declare them.

Your desire to be led by God rather than simply following your own personal goals is good and right, and God honors that kind of humility. You quoted Proverbs 29:18, where there is no vision the people perish. In that verse the word vision does not mean personal dreams or ambitions, but the revealed word and direction of God. When His word and His will are not known and obeyed, people wander without restraint. So the prayer for vision is really a prayer for clear spiritual sight, for a mind that sees Christ and His truth clearly and walks in it.

Scripture shows that God has given visions at specific times for His purposes. Isaiah saw the Lord sitting upon a high throne and heard the mysteries of heaven, and Paul in the night saw a man of Macedonia beseeching him to come and preach. Those visions were not sought out of curiosity, but were given by God to direct His servants to do His work. At other times God led His people in more ordinary ways, through His word, through His Spirit, and through providence, weaving together both hardships and refreshments to form them. What matters most is not seeking an experience, but having a healthy eye of understanding. As one of the homilies reminds us, as a disordered eye mistakes what it sees, so a mind made turbid by confusion mistakes spiritual things. A healthy vision is one that remains sane and free from distorted phantoms, grounded in the gospel and in the Scriptures which you have known.

Therefore pray not only for a striking experience, but for God to open your eyes to see Him who is invisible, to understand His word, and to be directed by Him day by day. Every good and perfect gift comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variableness or shadow of turning, and He will fulfill what He purposes for you as you trust in Jesus Christ alone for salvation and follow Him.

Guard their mind from confusion and from merely following personal goals, and make Your will known through Your word.
