Vision

Proverbs 29:18 says "Where there is no vision, the people perish:..." Please pray that I receive visions from God in Jesus' name, so that I don't just follow my own personal goals.


Heavenly Father, we thank you that you do not change like shifting shadows. You fulfil the visions you give us. Hallelujah!

It is written „Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

We join you in this beautiful desire to seek God's vision rather than simply following your own personal goals, and we thank God for your heart that wants to be led by Him.

We love that you quoted Proverbs 29:18 and James 1:17. In the translation we use it says Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint; but one who keeps the law is blessed. Proverbs 29:18. This helps us see that the vision spoken of there is not merely a personal dream or ambition, but the revelation of God through His Word and by His Spirit. Without His revelation we wander and cast off restraint, but when we keep His law and walk in His revealed will we are blessed. And as you rightly prayed, Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation, nor turning shadow. James 1:17. He does not change like shifting shadows and He is faithful to fulfill what He reveals.

We also rejoice that you prayed in the mighty name of Jesus, for it is only through Him that we have access to the Father. As it is written, Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. John 14:6.

Heavenly Father, we come before You together in the name of Jesus Christ. We thank You that You are the Father of lights who does not change, and that every good and perfect gift comes from You. We ask that You pour out Your Spirit upon our dear fellow believer and grant revelation and vision that is from You and not from the flesh. Help them not to lean on their own understanding but to trust in You with all their heart. We pray that You will make their path straight as they acknowledge You in all their ways. Proverbs 3:5-6. Give them a clear vision rooted in Your Word, which is a lamp to their feet and a light for their path. Psalm 119:105. As You have promised, pour out Your Spirit so that young men will see visions and old men will dream dreams. Acts 2:17, but help them to test every spirit and to hold firmly to that which is good. 1 John 4:1 and 1 Thessalonians 5:21. Reveal Your thoughts of peace toward them, to give them hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11. Teach them to write the vision and make it plain, and to wait for it though it takes time, because it will surely come. Habakkuk 2:2-3. Transform them by the renewing of their mind so they may prove what is Your good and acceptable and perfect will. Romans 12:2. Keep them from pursuing empty personal goals and draw them ever closer to Your perfect will, in Jesus name we pray, amen.

We encourage you to continue to seek vision first and foremost in the Scriptures, for God primarily reveals His will through His Word. Mystical experiences or impressions should always be weighed against Scripture and be confirmed by the Holy Spirit, by godly counsel, and by the peace of God. Do not despise the quiet leading of the Spirit, but do not chase visions for their own sake. Seek the Giver more than the gift. As you delight yourself in the Lord and abide in His Word, He will shape your desires to match His and He will make your steps clear. Be faithful to wait on Him, to pray, to fast, and to listen, and He who is faithful will fulfill the vision He gives you in His perfect timing.

We were encouraged reading your prayer. Wanting God's direction instead of just chasing your own goals is a beautiful place to be, and we want to join you in asking Him to make His way clear.

Sometimes we hope for a sudden picture or clear vision, and God can speak that way, but more often He shapes our vision gradually as we walk close to Him, through His Word, through prayer, through the counsel of wise believers and even through open and closed doors. Learning to recognize His leading takes time and patience.

One simple step that has helped many is to keep a quiet, consistent space to listen. You might set aside a few minutes each day to bring your plans to the Lord honestly, ask Him to align your heart with His purposes, and note what you sense He is highlighting. Then bring those notes to a trusted pastor or mature friend who knows you, to pray over them with you and help you weigh them. That shared discernment can bring a lot of clarity and peace.

Father, we thank You for this desire to follow You. We ask You to guide our friend day by day, to make Your will known in a way they can understand, and to give them confidence to walk in it. Shape their goals by Your goodness and keep them close to You as You lead. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your longing not to follow your own personal goals but to be led of the Lord is itself a good gift which cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. Where there is no vision the people perish, and that vision is not a fleeting dream or a new revelation beyond what is written, but the sure Word of God revealed to us. Give me but a Word out of God's mouth, and I can live upon it, but all the words out of man's mouth apart from Divine Inspiration are as unsatisfying food.

It is well to remember that the great divine sea of His purpose is still moving on. No single sentence nor single line of the divine purpose has He ever altered, and herein is wisdom, that while the creature is free, yet the divine purpose stands. You are not left to chart your own course by private goals, for you may be taken into the School of God as His pupil. As it is written, O God, You have taught me from my youth, and until this time have I declared Your wondrous works. He teaches by His Word, by His providence, and by His work in the heart, and the pupil who observes His work learns to wonder at it.

Therefore be guided first by the general directions given in God's Word, and by those great principles infused in every man who takes God for his Guide, to avoid everything that is evil and to bow with submission to the Divine will. Divine Wisdom, dressed in robes of love and tenderness, invites you to run into her arms, and haste is the author of a great deal of mischief. Pray not so much for sights and nightly visions, but that the Spirit would go with the Word, or it is so much wasted breath, and that you may be enabled to see and to trust His counsel.

I pray for you that the Lord will guide you with His counsel, and afterward receive you to Glory. May He who sent from above and drew His people out of many waters, make you to understand His revealed will in Scripture, dethrone obstinacy and give you acquiescence in His will, and fulfil in you the visions He has already given in His Word. May He keep you from following your own designs, and make you His faithful witness, declaring His wondrous works with pen and voice, and may you find that on earth there is no true glory for any man who takes his own course, but only for him who is guided by God's counsel.
