Your hunger to follow what God shows you rather than simply chasing your own plans is a good and right desire, and I am glad you brought it to prayer.

The verse you mentioned is often understood as a call for personal dreams or pictures, but in its context it speaks of divine revelation, the Word God has spoken. Where there is no revealed Word from God, people cast off restraint and wander. Where His Word is heard and obeyed, there is life and blessing. So the truest vision you can ask for is a clear sight of what God has already said in Scripture and a heart willing to walk in it.

You thanked God that He does not change like shifting shadows and that He fulfills what He shows us. That is exactly what Scripture teaches. Every good and perfect gift comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning. He is not fickle. What He purposes He will accomplish, and His gifts are not for sale and cannot be earned by bargaining. They come by grace.

It also helps to remember that God cannot be localized. He is not confined to one place or one special moment. You do not have to go somewhere holy to find Him. He is present with you wherever you are, He sees and knows, and He can speak and guide in the ordinary places of life. At times in the Bible He did give a vision, as when Cornelius was praying and saw an angel, or when God directed Peter on the other side to go to him. Notice how God worked on both ends, preparing the heart of the one seeking and sending the messenger with His Word. That is often how He still works, opening your heart and confirming His direction through Scripture and through the provision of what you need to understand His way more fully.

Many believers have never read through the whole Bible, and so they remain slow to grasp all that God has made available. If you want vision, give yourself to His Word daily. It is the sure revelation of His will. God has an eternal purpose which He purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord, and He has left you here in this world for a purpose, to be used by Him and to be kept from evil while you fulfill what He has for you. Living only for personal goals wastes the life He gave, while living to be His servant, doing His will, allows Him to show His power through you.

Prayer is not a tool to make God accomplish your will. The purpose of prayer is to get God's will done. So the best prayer is not only, give me a vision, but, show me Your will and make me willing to do it. There are seasons and appointed times for every purpose under heaven, and God makes everything beautiful in its time. He even uses travail and trial to develop character and to shape you for His purposes.

May you keep seeking Him in His Word and in prayer, trusting His unchanging character.

Let us pray together. Heavenly Father, thank You that You are the Father of lights who never changes, and that every good and perfect gift comes from Your hand. Thank You for giving eternal life in Your Son to all who believe, and for having an eternal purpose that stands firm in Christ. I ask for this dear one who wants to follow You and not merely personal ambition. Grant clarity through Your Word, which is the true vision that keeps us from perishing. Open eyes to understand Scripture, give a willing heart to obey what You show, and fulfill in this life what You have purposed. Keep this one from evil and use this life for Your glory. Teach what it means to pray for Your will to be done, and work on every side to confirm Your direction as You did in the Scriptures. In the mighty and powerful name of Jesus, amen.
