Your desire to follow the Lord's leading rather than simply pursuing your own personal goals is a right and humble desire, and God honors that kind of heart.
The verse you mentioned in Proverbs is often misunderstood. In that context the word translated vision does not mean a supernatural dream or a private picture in the night. It means the revealed Word of God, His prophetic counsel and instruction. Where that revelation is absent, people cast off restraint and wander without direction. Where His Word is heard and obeyed, there is life and blessing. So the greatest safeguard against merely following your own plans is not seeking a new experience, but giving yourself to what God has already revealed in Scripture. It is a tragedy that many people, even inside the church, have never truly read or been taught the Bible, yet it is there that God most clearly shows His will.
That does not mean God never gives a supernatural vision. In the book of Acts, Paul was at Troas and in the night saw a man from Macedonia pleading, come over and help us. After that vision he went at once, and the gospel came into Philippi and beyond. That was a real and decisive guidance from God.
Yet many faithful believers walk with God their whole lives without ever receiving that kind of dramatic vision or visitation from an angel. Instead God places a deep and steady desire in the heart, a burden and conviction by His Spirit that will not go away, a quiet urging to serve Him in a particular way. Both are valid ways God leads, but the dramatic experience is not the norm and it is not required.
This is important because our faith must rest on what never changes. The Bible says every good and perfect gift is from above, from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variableness, no shadow of turning. His Word does not shift like shadows. It remains true. If we build our faith on an experience, we are on uncertain ground, because experiences can fade, be questioned, or be contradicted by another experience. If we build our faith on the fact of God's Word, we have a firm foundation that never wavers, because God Himself never changes and He will fulfill what He has promised.
God's will for your life is the very best that could happen to you and to those you love. He created you for fellowship with Himself and with a purpose that is eternal, ultimately to be conformed to the image of Jesus Christ. The purpose of prayer is not to get God to accomplish your will, but to bring your heart into alignment so that His will is done on earth as it is in heaven. Often we do not know exactly how to pray or which direction to go, and there the Holy Spirit helps us, interceding and guiding us when we lack wisdom. We can cling to what we do know, that for those who love God, all things are working together for good as He carries out His eternal purpose.
So I would encourage you to pray less for a spectacular vision and more for a clear understanding of Scripture, for wisdom, and for a willing heart. Ask God to show you His revealed will in His Word, to make you sensitive to the quiet work of His Spirit, and to keep you usable for whatever He wants to do through you. If in His wisdom He chooses to give you a dream or vision, be open to receive it and test it by Scripture. If He leads instead by a growing desire, by open doors, by the counsel of His Word and by peace in your heart, trust that as well.
I pray for you now. Heavenly Father, thank You that You are the Father of lights who never changes, and that every good gift comes from Your hand. Thank You for this heart that wants Your way above its own way. Open the Scriptures to this dear one, give understanding and a love for Your Word, which is Your revealed vision for Your people. By Your Holy Spirit, grant wisdom where there is uncertainty, and help to pray according to Your will. Lead step by step, whether through Your Word alone or through any other means You choose, and conform this life more and more to the image of Christ. Make this life an instrument for Your purposes, and fulfill the good work You have begun. In Jesus' name, amen.
