Proverbs 29:18 says "Where there is no vision, the people perish:..." Please pray that I receive visions from God in Jesus' name, so that I don't just follow my own personal goals.


Heavenly Father, we thank you that you do not change like shifting shadows. You fulfil the visions you give us. Hallelujah!

We join with you in this desire to seek God's direction above your own personal goals and we thank God that you have asked in the name of Jesus, for it is only through Him that we have access to the Father.

We love your heart for vision and we want to gently share the fullness of what Proverbs 29:18 teaches, Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint; but one who keeps the law is blessed. Proverbs 29:18 This is not only about personal dreams or ambitions, but about divine revelation, the revealed word and will of God which keeps us from wandering into our own ways. True vision comes from hearing and obeying what God has spoken.

We rejoice that you recognize that Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation, nor turning shadow. James 1:17 Our Father does not change like shifting shadows and what He reveals He is faithful to fulfill. We also remember the promise, It will be in the last days, says God, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh. Your sons and your daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions. Your old men will dream dreams. Acts 2:17 God does still speak and give vision, yet His visions will always align with His written Word, so we are told Beloved, don't believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God Acts 4:1 and to hold fast to what is good.

Our encouragement to you is to seek vision not as an experience alone but as intimate guidance from the Lord through His Word, through prayer, and through the quiet counsel of the Holy Spirit. Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don't lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says Yahweh, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11 His promise to each of us is I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you with my eye on you. Psalm 32:8

Heavenly Father, we thank You that You are the Father of lights with no variation or shadow of turning, and that every good and perfect gift comes from Your hand. We thank You for the hunger You have placed in this heart to know Your vision and not merely follow personal goals. In the name of Jesus we ask that You pour out Your Spirit and grant revelation according to Your perfect will. Give visions and dreams if it pleases You, but above all give clear understanding of Your Word and Your ways. Help us to not lean on our own understanding but to acknowledge You in all our ways. Lead and guide with Your eye upon us, make our paths straight, and give discernment to test all things and hold fast to what is from You. Fulfill the vision You give, for You are faithful to complete what You begin. Let Your will be done and let Your name be glorified in this life. In Jesus mighty and powerful name we pray, amen.

We were encouraged to read your prayer for vision. It is a good and humble desire to want God to shape your direction rather than just chasing your own goals. We hear that longing in what you wrote, and we are praying with you for clarity.

One thing we have found helpful is that God's vision is less often a sudden dramatic picture and more often a growing sense of His calling that pulls our hearts toward what He loves and steadies our daily choices. It gives an appetite for what is above and helps us walk faithfully one step at a time, rather than offering a magic answer for the future. Learning to tell the difference between our own ideas and His leading takes time, quiet, and community.

A simple next step that may help is to keep a regular, unhurried time in Scripture and prayer, and as you do, note what consistently stirs your conscience, burdens you for others, or aligns with how God has gifted you. Then bring those notes to a trusted pastor or mature believer who knows you, to help weigh what you are hearing.

Father, we thank You that You do not change and that You love to guide Your children. Give our brother clarity, humility and patience as he seeks You, and help him to follow what You show him step by step. Lead him in Your will through Jesus Christ, amen.

Your desire not to follow your own personal goals but to be led by the Lord is itself a good gift from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. It is well to bring that desire to Him in prayer, for He does not change like shifting shadows and He fulfils what He has purposed.

You have quoted that where there is no vision the people perish. In that text the word vision means the revealing of the mind of God, His Word made known to His people. In former times He spoke by prophets, but now He has spoken to us by His Son and has given us the sure Word of Scripture. Give me but a Word out of God's mouth, and I can live upon it, but all the words out of man's mouth, apart from Divine Inspiration, must be as unsatisfying food. We do not now look for fresh revelations to be added to what is written, for the whole counsel of God is already set before us. What we need is not a new vision, but opened eyes to see the wonders in His law and a heart made willing to walk therein.

This is how the Lord guides His people. David could say, O God, You have taught me from my youth, and until this time have I declared Your wondrous works. He was God's pupil in the school of providence and of the Word, chastened yet never cast out, taught to observe God's work and to wonder at it. So you also shall be guided, not by haste nor by dreams, but by the general directions given in God's Word and by great principles infused by Grace, to avoid everything that is evil and to acquiesce in the Divine will. When self goes, God comes in, and when human wisdom goes, then God's wisdom appears.

Remember also that God's purpose stands infallible. You and I are as waves upon His great sea, yet His sea moves on according to His counsel. He effects His purpose while still the creature is free, and this is the miracle of miracles, that the creatures are free, absolutely free, and yet the Divine purpose stands. You need not fear that you shall miss His way if you commit your way unto Him. He will guide you with His counsel, and afterward receive you to glory. On earth there is no real glory for us unless we are guided by God's counsel, and there is no true glory for any man who takes his own course.

Heavenly Father, we thank You that You are the Father of lights and every good and perfect gift comes down from You. We thank You that Your purpose is settled and You have never altered a single line of Your counsel, and that Your Word is a lamp unto our feet. Grant to this soul not a fleeting dream, but a clear sight of Christ in the Scriptures, and a heart to love what You love and to hate what You hate. Teach as You have taught Your pupils from youth, increase faith and Divine Grace, and make Your will plain through Your Word, through providence, and through the gentle constraints of Your Spirit. Lead away from mere personal goals and make willing to follow where You lead, trusting the blood of Jesus Christ Your Son which cleanses from all sin. Fulfil Your own purpose in this life, and guide with Your counsel till You receive to glory. In Jesus' mighty name, amen.

Your desire not to follow only your own personal goals but to walk in God's will is itself a good and God honoring desire, and I thank God for it.

You mention Proverbs 29:18, "Where there is no vision, the people perish." It is important to understand what that word vision means there. In the original language it does not mean a personal dream or a private picture in the mind, but the revealed word and counsel of God, the prophetic revelation by which God makes His will known to His people. Where that revelation is neglected, people cast off restraint and wander. Where it is heard and obeyed, there is life. That revelation we now have fully in the Holy Scriptures.

This is why the Scriptures teach us that in times past God gave sensible visions for a particular purpose. Peter was given the vision of the sheet let down from heaven, not for his own guidance in daily matters, but so that he would understand God's great plan to bring the Gentiles into the Church. At Pentecost there was a sound of wind and tongues of fire, not for the sake of the apostles themselves, but for those who were present who needed a sign. Signs are for those who do not yet believe, but for those who believe, faith is sufficient, and we receive through faith what was once shown by signs. We no longer need a new sensible vision, because God has given us His complete Word and His Holy Spirit to illumine our understanding.

A healthy eye sees clearly, but a disordered eye mistakes what is before it. So also the mind, when it is troubled by its own thoughts and desires, can form distorted and imaginary phantoms and call them visions. That is why we must ask God not for new revelations beyond Scripture, but for a clear and healthy understanding to see and obey what He has already revealed.

So my prayer for you is not that you would chase after private visions, but that God would give you wisdom and illumination as you dwell in His Word, that He would make His will plain to you through Scripture, through prayer, through the counsel of faithful believers, and through the quiet leading of the Holy Spirit in obedience.

Heavenly Father, Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning, from whom every good and perfect gift comes down, I pray for this one who seeks You. Grant clarity of mind and purity of heart to understand Your Word. Guard from deception and from following mere personal ambition. Give a love for Your revealed will and the courage to walk in it, even when it is costly. Lead step by step, and fulfill in this life what You have promised in Christ. Make Your way known, and give grace to follow it with faith and obedience. In the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, amen.

Thank you for sharing your heart and your desire not to follow your own personal goals but to be led by the Lord. That desire itself is pleasing to God, and it is good that you want to be guided by Him.

The verse you mentioned is often understood as a promise of personal pictures or ideas for the future, but its meaning is a little different. Where there is no vision, the people cast off restraint. The word there speaks of prophetic revelation, the revealed Word of God. When people do not have or do not heed what God has spoken, they wander without direction and try to fill the void with many other things. What keeps us from perishing is hearing and holding fast to what God has already said in Scripture. His Word is sure and not one word of it will fail. Heaven and earth may pass away, but His Word will stand, and what He has purposed He will bring to pass.

Scripture also speaks of a time when God would pour out His Spirit upon all flesh, and sons and daughters would prophesy, old men would dream dreams and young men would see visions, and even upon servants He would pour out His Spirit. That promise points to the work of the Spirit in the last days, and it shows that God does still reveal Himself and guide His people. When the prophet Daniel was given great visions, he was told to seal them up, for they were for the last days when knowledge would be increased and further understanding would be given. God has His purposes for the whole earth and for each life, and those purposes will be fulfilled.

You were created by God with a purpose and a plan. He made you for fellowship with Himself and to spend eternity with Him, and His intent is to conform you to the image of Jesus Christ. He has said that He has made you and He will bear you and carry you and deliver you. His purposes will stand whether we are faithful or fail, but how wonderful it is to be an instrument in His hand rather than to miss that opportunity.

We do not always know how to pray or what to ask for as we ought, and that is where the help of the Holy Spirit is so precious. When we pray from our own intellect we can miss the will of God, but the Spirit assists us and guides our prayers according to the will of God. When we know we are praying according to His will, we have confidence that He hears us. The good gifts we need come down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variableness nor shadow of turning. He does not change like shifting shadows, and He will fulfill what He has spoken.

So my prayer for you is not simply that you would see a striking picture, but that God would give you a clear grasp of His Word and a heart that is satisfied in it, and that the Spirit would lead you day by day into His will.

Heavenly Father, we thank You that You are the Father of lights and every good and perfect gift comes from You. We thank You that You do not change and that Your Word is faithful and true. We ask in the name of Jesus that You would give this dear one wisdom and understanding as he seeks You, that You would open his eyes to Your Word and make Your will clear. Help him by Your Spirit to pray according to Your will and to walk in the purpose for which You created him, to be conformed to the image of Christ. Keep him from wandering after his own goals, and satisfy his heart with Your presence and Your truth. Bear him and carry him and deliver him, and fulfill Your good purpose in his life.
