Vision

Beloved of All
Proverbs 29:18 says "Where there is no vision, the people perish:..." Please pray that I receive visions from God in Jesus' name, so that I don't just follow my own personal goals.

Heavenly Father, we thank you that you do not change like shifting shadows. You fulfil the visions you give us. Hallelujah!

It is written „Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.
In Jesus' mighty and powerful name, amen.

We join with you in this desire for God-given vision and we thank you for praying in the mighty name of Jesus, for it is only through Him that we have access to the Father.

We love your heart to not follow your own personal goals but to follow the Lord's leading, and we agree with you that where there is no vision the people perish. In the World English Bible that verse says, Proverbs 29:18 Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint; but one who keeps the law is blessed. This reminds us that true vision is not merely our own ambition or ideas, but divine revelation, God revealing His will and His Word to us so we do not cast off restraint and wander. God still guides His people today, and He desires to give us wisdom and direction, but that guidance will never contradict His written Word.

We also rejoice that you quoted James 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation, nor turning shadow. What a comfort that our Father does not change like shifting shadows, and every vision and gift that truly comes from Him is good and perfect and He will be faithful to fulfill what He initiates.

We want to encourage you that while God can and does give visions, dreams, and clear direction as spoken of in Acts 2:17 It will be in the last days, says God, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh. Your sons and your daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions. Your old men will dream dreams, we must always test what we receive against Scripture and seek above all to know the Giver more than the gift. We are told in 1 John 4:1 Beloved, don’t believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God, and in Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. The safest vision is one that flows from abiding in Christ, delighting in His Word, and walking in obedience, for Psalm 32:8 says I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you with my eye on you.

Personal goals are not wrong if they are surrendered to God, but we must lay them down daily and ask for His will to be done, trusting Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says Yahweh, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future.

We pray together for you now.

Heavenly Father, we thank You that You do not change and that You are the Father of lights from whom every good and perfect gift comes. We lift up our brother or sister before You and ask in Jesus' name that You would pour out clear revelation according to Your will. Grant visions, wisdom, and understanding that are truly from You and align with Your Word. Remove any selfish ambition or personal agenda, and give a heart that seeks first Your Kingdom. Teach us to wait on You, to delight in Your law, and to walk in obedience so that we are blessed and kept from casting off restraint. Lead by Your Holy Spirit, instruct and counsel with Your eye upon us, and make the path straight. Fulfill the vision You give for Your glory and for good. Fill our hearts with discernment to test every spirit and to hold fast to what is true. We ask this in the mighty and powerful name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, amen.

We appreciate you sharing this longing with us. Wanting God to lead rather than just chasing your own plans is a humble and good desire, and we hear how much you want to stay close to Him.

One thing that has helped many believers is to think of hearing from God less as a single dramatic moment and more as long term training. Like preparing for a marathon, growth comes through small, steady practices over time, regular prayer, reading Scripture thoughtfully, fellowship with other believers and quiet listening. Those habits shape our hearts to recognize His direction and keep us from leaning only on our own ideas or fleeting feelings.

A helpful next step could be to set aside a consistent, unhurried time each day to bring your plans before the Lord and ask what He is showing you today. Jot down what you notice as you pray and read, and share it with a trusted pastor or mature believer who knows you well. They can help you weigh what you sense with wisdom and care.

We are praying for you.

Father, we lift our friend to You and thank You that You do not change and You are faithful to lead. Give clarity, peace and a steady heart to follow Your will step by step. Draw them closer to Jesus and make Your way plain as they seek You. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your longing not to follow mere personal goals but to be led by the Lord is itself a gracious sign that His hand is at work in you, for naturally we do not like being guided, but grace dethrones obstinacy and gives acquiescence in the divine will.

You quote the proverb, Where there is no vision, the people perish, but he that keepeth the law, happy is he. That vision is not a private dream or a fleeting impression, but the revealed counsel of God, His prophetic word. Where that revelation is neglected, the people cast off restraint, but where it is kept, there is life and happiness. Give me but a word out of God's mouth, and I can live upon it, but all the words out of man's mouth apart from divine inspiration are as unsatisfying as stones.

Therefore my prayer for you is not that you should chase after new revelations, for the whole purpose of God was written from the beginning and He has never altered a single line of it, but that you may be guided by the sure directions already given in His Word. The Psalmist says, Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory. On earth there is no true glory for any man who takes his own course. First be guided by the general directions given in Scripture, and by the great principles infused in every man who takes God for his guide, to avoid everything that is evil and to bow with submission to His will. By that very bowing we are furnished with unerring guidance.

Remember also that it is a wonderful thing how God effects His purpose while still the creature is free. The great divine sea of His purpose is still moving on, and though we are but waves, His counsel shall stand. If your calling is real, rest assured it is divine, an holy calling not according to our works but according to His own purpose and grace which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began. It is a high calling and a heavenly calling, a call from heaven and a call to heaven, that lifts up the heart and sets it upon heavenly things, eternity, holiness and Christ Himself.

So let us pray together. Heavenly Father, with whom is no variableness neither shadow of turning, we thank Thee that every good gift cometh down from the Father of lights. Fulfil in this soul not the visions of a restless heart, but Thine own infallible purpose. Open the eyes to understand Thy Word, to hear the voice of the Shepherd who calls His own sheep by name and leads them out, and to follow Him. Guide with Thy counsel, keep from hasty and self chosen ways, and press the heart toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Let Thy will be done, and let this life declare Thy wondrous works, till Thou dost afterward receive to glory. In Jesus mighty and powerful name, amen.
