Proverbs 29:18 says "Where there is no vision, the people perish:..." Please pray that I receive visions from God in Jesus' name, so that I don't just follow my own personal goals.

We hear your heart’s cry for divine direction, and we stand with you in seeking the Lord’s vision for your life. Proverbs 29:18 indeed warns us, "Where there is no vision, the people perish; but he who keeps the law is happy." Without God’s guidance, we are prone to wander, chasing our own desires rather than His perfect will. But we rejoice that you are not content with mere self-made plans, you long for the clarity that only comes from the Holy Spirit.
First, we must address a foundational truth: true vision from God is rooted in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. If you have not yet surrendered your life to Him as Lord and Savior, we urge you to do so now. Scripture declares, "For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus" (1 Timothy 2:5). Without Christ, we have no access to the Father, and our prayers go unheard. If you have not confessed your sins and placed your faith in Jesus’ death and resurrection for your salvation, we plead with you to do so today. "If you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved" (Romans 10:9).
For those who are in Christ, visions and dreams from God are indeed possible, as Joel 2:28 promises: "I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; and your sons and your daughters will prophesy. Your old men will dream dreams. Your young men will see visions." But we must approach this with humility, testing every spirit and every revelation against Scripture (1 John 4:1). God’s vision for your life will never contradict His Word. It will align with His character, holy, just, and full of love.
We also caution against seeking visions for selfish motives. Are you desiring direction for God’s glory or your own? Are you willing to obey even if His vision requires sacrifice? Jesus said, "If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me" (Matthew 16:24). God’s vision for you may not be what you expect, but it will always be what is best.
Let us pray together:
Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus, the Author and Perfecter of our faith. Lord, we lift up our brother/sister who is seeking Your vision for their life. We ask that You would open their spiritual eyes to see what You see, and their ears to hear Your voice clearly. Remove any distractions, fears, or selfish ambitions that may cloud their understanding. Father, we pray that You would speak through Your Word, through godly counsel, and through the still, small voice of Your Spirit. Give them the courage to obey, even when Your path is difficult.
Lord, if there are areas of sin or disobedience in their life, reveal them now. Convict their heart so they may repent and walk in holiness. We rebuke any spirit of confusion or deception that would seek to lead them astray. We declare that Your vision for their life is perfect, and Your plans are for their good and Your glory.
We thank You, Father, that You are a God who speaks. You spoke the world into existence, and You still speak today. We trust that You will make Your will known to them in Your perfect timing. May they walk in the fullness of Your purpose, bringing honor to Your name in all they do.

Seek godly mentors who can offer biblical wisdom, and remain sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s leading. Remember, God’s vision for you is not just about what you do, it’s about who you are becoming in Christ. Walk in faith, and trust that He who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ (Philippians 1:6).

You speak of visions, but take heed that you distinguish between the vain imaginations of the heart and that true vision of which the proverb speaks: the hearing of God’s Word, the seeing of His Son in the face of Jesus Christ. The people perish not for want of ecstatic trances, but where there is no preaching of the Word, no understanding of the divine plan. Has He not given us a more sure word of prophecy, the Scriptures, which are able to make us wise unto salvation? What vision would you crave beyond the revelation of Christ crucified, the wisdom of God and the power of God?
You fear chasing your own goals. That is a holy fear. Yet the remedy is not to seek visions, but to bow your will beneath the infallible purpose of Him who works all things after the counsel of His own will. He is of one mind; none can turn Him. Instead of begging for new light, bend your soul to the light you have. The Word is a lamp to your feet, walk by it. The Spirit who plucked you as a brand from the burning will guide you into all truth, not by unsealing hidden things apart from the Book, but by writing its precepts upon the fleshy tables of your heart.
Go to the Cross, and there you will see God’s purpose, justice and mercy kissing. There your own ambitions will dissolve like morning mist. Let this be your vision: Jesus Christ and Him crucified. As you behold Him, you will learn to say, “Not my will, but Thine be done.” Your own goals will shrink to their proper size, swallowed up in the grand design of God’s glory. He who has begun a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ. Cease fretting after signs, and feed upon the sure Word. Then your path shall be as the shining light, shining more and more unto the perfect day.

You are right to fear following your own personal goals, and it is good that you have asked for prayer. I will pray in Jesus' name that God gives you true vision, but let us ask for the right kind.
The vision in Proverbs 29:18 is not first a private picture or a dream. It is the prophetic word by which God directs His people. The rest of the verse proves it: "But he that keepeth the law, happy is he." Vision and obedience belong together. The one who only seeks signs may still perish, but the one who keeps God's word has true sight.
So I will ask God to give you the vision of Christ crucified and risen. I will ask Him to open the eyes of your soul to discern good and evil, and to see the heavenly things already present among us. When the church gathers, when prayers ascend, when sins are forgiven through the gospel, when the Spirit is with us, these are not earthly things. They are heavenly things given so that you may become a citizen of heaven while still on earth.
Do not seek visions for their own sake. The Apostle Paul had visions and revelations, yet he did not glory in them. He would not make them his confidence. He gloried in weaknesses so that the power of Christ might rest upon him. True vision from God humbles you. It makes you holy, not merely curious. If a supposed vision leads you away from Scripture, away from the church's faith, or away from repentance, reject it.
I will pray that the Father of glory gives you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him. I will pray that your goal is no longer your own plan but His kingdom and righteousness. The heavenly image is not obtained by seeking strange experiences. It is obtained by doing heavenly things: humility, mercy, purity, prayer, and love of the brethren. As you bear the image of the heavenly Man, God will direct your steps. May He keep every false vision far from you and give you the one thing needful: to know Jesus Christ and to keep His commandments.

You are wise to ask for God's vision rather than simply following your own goals. Proverbs 29:18 warns that without vision people lose restraint and perish. I will gladly pray with you that God gives you true vision in Jesus' name.
Remember that you do not need to abandon your current work or withdraw from your normal life to hear from him. He meets people in the middle of their daily responsibilities when they are actually listening. Ask him for ears to hear and a heart ready to obey.
Let his word test every vision you receive. God speaks with authority, and he will not contradict what he has already made known in Scripture. A genuine vision from him will not merely bless your personal plans. It will redirect them toward his kingdom, his righteousness, and his will being done on earth.
God has already taken the first step toward you and wants you to turn fully toward him. Keep asking, keep seeking, and keep submitting your desires to his word. I will pray that the Lord gives you clarity, that his Spirit fills you, and that the vision you receive comes from him and not from your own striving.
