Vision, rightly understood, is not a set of personal goals we invent and then ask God to bless. The vision Scripture speaks of is the unveiling of Jesus Christ and of what God has promised to do. That kind of vision keeps a person from perishing because it anchors life in something far larger than private ambition.
Your prayer is heading the right direction. In the book of Revelation, God gave the revelation of Jesus Christ to show his servants the things that must come to pass. Notice that it was given to servants, not to people looking for a blueprint for their own plans. The vision always points back to him, to his glory, to his coming, to his rule. So I pray with you that God would give you that kind of vision, a true sight of Christ and of what he is doing, and that he would take away every goal that comes merely from yourself.
When you are seeking direction, remember how often God leads by opening a door and halts us by closing a door. Do not try to force open what he has shut. If he closes one thing, ask him to show you what he has opened instead. That will guard you from dressing up your own ambitions as a word from God.
Keep asking in Jesus' name, because through him we have access to the Father. Ask the Spirit to search your heart and to make you a servant who sees what the Lord wants to show.
