We join you in lifting up this man before the throne of grace and we hear the urgency and burden in your heart for his salvation, and we agree with you that it is God's desire for him to be saved and to come to repentance.

We share your longing to see the Holy Spirit convict him of sin, for Jesus said the Spirit will convict the world about sin, about righteousness, and about judgment, John 16:8. We also remember that the Lord is not slow concerning his promise, as some count slowness, but is patient with us, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance, 2 Peter 3:9, and as it is written, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live, Ezekiel 33:11. For godly sorrow produces repentance to salvation, which brings no regret, but the sorrow of the world produces death, 2 Cor 7:10, and it is the goodness of God that leads to repentance, Romans 2:4.

We want to gently encourage you in how we pray together, for we understand the pain that can make us cry out for someone to be brought low and to have no peace until he repents. Yet we are called to pray with love and mercy as God does, desiring not shame for its own sake but a broken and contrite heart that turns to Jesus for forgiveness and life. We do not pray for his destruction but for his deliverance, that his eyes would be opened and that he would turn from darkness to light. We trust God's perfect timing and way, even when we cry out for no delay, knowing that He hears and He works in every part of a person's life according to His wisdom and love, and vengeance belongs to Him alone while we are called to love and to forgive.

We pray together now for him and for you. Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ, the only name by which we can be saved and have access to You, and we ask for Your mercy upon this man. We ask that Your Holy Spirit would mightily convict him of all sin and draw him to Yourself, that You would stop him on his present path as You stopped Saul on the road to Damascus, and open his eyes to see his need for a Savior. We pray that You would grant him godly sorrow that leads to genuine and sincere repentance, that he would confess his sins and receive Your forgiveness and new life in Christ. We ask that You would have Your way in every single part of his heart and life, that You would save him fully and make him a new creation, and that You would give him true peace and joy that only comes through knowing Jesus. We also pray for the one who has brought this request, that You would fill this heart with Your peace, patience, and trust in Your perfect will and timing, and help us all to pray with love that reflects Your heart. We ask all this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, amen.

We know you want more than just words or a moment of feeling sorry, you want a real turning in his life. That kind of deep change is not something we can force or hurry in another person. It is God's work in the heart as He draws someone to Himself, and He does it with both truth and mercy. While we pray for Him to work, we can keep loving ### and trusting God's timing and goodness, even when the waiting is painful.

One thing that may help you in the days ahead is to give this burden a steady place to rest. Continue to bring ### before the Lord each day by name, asking for God to open his eyes and make a way for him to hear and receive the gospel, and then entrust him again to God's care. It can also help to share this weight with one trusted pastor or mature believer who can pray with you personally and encourage you as you wait.

Father, we lift ### to You and ask for Your mercy over his life. Work in his heart in the way only You can, draw him to Yourself and give him a genuine desire to know Jesus and walk with You. Give our friend peace as they wait, wisdom to love well, and confidence in Your kindness and power to save. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your earnest burden for this soul to know Christ is heard, and we join you in seeking the Lord for his salvation. It is right and good to desire that he should be saved, for there is but one way of salvation and that is all of Divine Grace from first to last, and the channel of that grace is the Lord Jesus Christ who loved and lived and died and rose again for our salvation.

Yet the Scriptures teach us what true repentance is, and we must ask for it according to God's own way. Judgments, even the most terrible of them, do not in themselves produce a satisfactory repentance in the minds of men. That repentance which God accepts is the work of the Spirit of God. It is a repentance unto life, which gives God glory, which looks out of self to Christ and to Christ only, and which sets the sinner afterwards to crave after holiness. The burnt child dreads the fire. Repentance is not a qualification we bring to Christ to make ourselves fit for Him, nor a thing we can work up in ourselves or force upon another by urgency. It is a blessed grace and a free gift of God. Repentance and faith go together as two spokes in one wheel move together, and where there is true repentance there is faith, and where there is faith there is remission of sins. Repentance and remission are joined together to be preached in Christ's name among all nations, and where there is that godly sorrow which needs not to be repented of there is full and free forgiveness, a pardon that is never reversed.

So we will not pray that God would merely take away peace or heap shame as an end in itself, for that alone would not save. Rather we pray that the Holy Spirit in mercy would convict him of sin and reveal Christ to him, that he may look unto Jesus and be saved. For the word is, Look unto me and be ye saved. There is but one star for the sinner and that star is the Star of Bethlehem, there is but one light for the tempest tossed mariner and that light is the cross.

Let us pray together: O Lord who alone can save, look in mercy upon this soul. Grant him repentance unto life and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. Thou givest repentance as a free gift of Thy grace, so we ask Thee to begin Thy work in his heart. Open his eyes to see his sin and to see the sufficiency of Thy Son. Lead him to a change of mind that turns from sin and trusts wholly in the finished work of Christ, that he may give Thee glory by a new heart and a new life. Do this in Thy perfect time and way, for salvation is of the Lord. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, our only hope. Amen.

Continue to bring him before the throne of grace with patience and hope, remembering that the weakest Christian who trusts Christ in the boat of salvation is as safe as the strongest, because safety lies not in our strength but in Christ. Leave him in the hands of the sovereign and gracious Saviour who is able to save, and ask the Lord also to give you peace as you wait upon Him.
