Your heart is burdened, and we stand with you in fervent prayer, trusting in the righteous judgment and mercy of God. First, let us affirm that vengeance belongs to the Lord (Romans 12:19), and He is just and faithful to execute judgment on those who persist in unrepentant sin. We also pray for ourselves, Lord, that we would not grow weary in praying for this individual. Lord, we declare that no weapon formed against Your children will prosper (Isaiah 54:17), and we stand on Your promise that You will avenge Your own elect who cry out to You day and night (Luke 18:7-8). We trust You to bring about justice in Your perfect timing and way. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Bitterness has a way of eating at the one who holds it, not the one it’s aimed at. So while we long for the person who harmed you to come to genuine repentance, we also want you to be free from the exhaustion of keeping this offense on repeat in your heart.

We are not going to pray for punishment, but we will wholeheartedly pray for the very thing you named at the end of your request: that this man would be brought to his knees in honest, life-changing surrender to Jesus Christ. That is the true turning point, and it is also where your own healing can begin to grow. God sees every injustice, and He alone knows how to bring about both conviction and restoration.

Lord Jesus, you see the hurt this person has carried and the wrongs that were done. We ask now for a work no human can accomplish: arrest the heart of the one who caused this pain, not for punishment’s sake, but so he truly repents and finds new life in you. At the same time, guard this wounded heart. Release the grip of bitterness, and replace it with the quiet confidence that you are the righteous Judge. The cry of your heart reaches upward with a trembling hand, yet I must bid you consider whether the prayer you have uttered is shaped by the mind of Christ or by the heat of a wounded spirit. You ask the Lord to arrest, convict, and punish, and to grant no peace until surrender. That there is a great need for this soul to be brought to the feet of Jesus, I do not doubt. But take heed: true repentance is not born of the terror of punishment, but of a sight of the pierced hands and a sorrow that gives God glory. “They repented not to give Him glory”, that is the mark of a repentance that leaves the man still in his sins. The repentance that the Holy Spirit works in the heart is not a mere howling under the rod, but a sweet, holy breaking before the cross.

You long for this man to be brought to his knees. So do I. But let your prayer ascend not as a demand for his misery, but as a longing for his true salvation. Remember, the gift of repentance is granted in the name of Jesus, it is not wrung out by threats, but drawn by the cords of love. When you pray, “no peace till he surrenders,” see to it that you mean a surrender to the gentle rule of Christ, the Prince of Peace, and not a mere capitulation to fear. Unconditional surrender means flinging wide the gates of Mansoul to the rightful King, not grovelling before an angry tyrant. Pray that he may kiss the Son, lest he perish; but pray also that you, yourself, might be filled with the compassion that longs for the salvation of even those who have wronged you.

Perhaps the most searching question I can put to you is this: what is your own repentance? Hast thou that sorrow which leads thee out of self and unto Christ only? Take care, for it is possible to be zealous for the punishment of another’s sin while neglecting the plague of one’s own heart. The very repentance you desire for him must be true in you, a repentance that is not a prelude to grace, but a fruit of grace already given. You cannot manufacture it; you must look to the Saviour for it. And for him, the same way lies open: “Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth.” It is not the severity of his conviction that will save him, but the simplicity of his faith in the finished work of Jesus.

Therefore, let your urgent prayer be transformed. Ask the Lord mightily to grant him that godly sorrow which worketh repentance unto life. Plead the blood of the covenant, that the Holy Spirit would draw him with the bands of love. Pray that he may be made willing in the day of God’s power, not beaten into submission, but melted into surrender. And while you pray, take the whole matter of your own salvation and leave it again with unwavering confidence in Christ alone. Rejoice in God’s salvation; it is his, from first to last.

You pray for this man’s arrest and punishment, but consider what spirit moves such a prayer. Love of money, passion for power, for glory, and the like loosens love and severs it asunder. Nothing is so opposed to love as sin, and I mean not love towards God, but that towards our neighbor also. If you allow anger to fester, you are yourself in danger of being devoured by the very sins you wish upon another. For where men are living in righteousness and virtue, peace is found; but the covetous and the vicious, left to their own, tear one another apart.

Yet there is repentance, and it has great force. It is able to set free even him that hath been baptized much in sins, and to establish in safety him who is in danger, even though he should have come unto the very depth of wickedness. This is not a license to sin, but a call to pray that he may find true repentance, not merely a sorrow extorted by punishment. For Esau sought it with tears, but found no place of repentance, because his grief was not the grief of a changed heart; he intended afterward to slay his brother. Tears alone, without a sincere turning to God, are not repentance.

Therefore, instead of crying out for his arrest and pain, exhort him. After the manner of physicians, show him the wound, then apply the plaster. If you rebuke without convicting, you seem rash; if you convict and rebuke but offer no consolation, all labor is lost. Reproof is most seasonable when it is paired with a balm of kindness. You want him brought to his knees? Then pray that Christ be formed in him, as Paul travailed in birth again for his wayward children. Leave the measure of justice to God, whose righteousness is as the mountains, and do not insist upon your own strict account. For if absolute justice were served, we would all have perished. As you have received mercy, desire mercy for him. A true surrender to Jesus Christ does not come from a forced peace under punishment, but from a heart overwhelmed by the forbearance of God.
