You have laid hold of the very weapon that wins every battle, prayer. Your cry has not fallen to the ground, for the Lord delights to be called upon in the day of trouble. Do you not remember that picture of Moses upon the hilltop, with arms stretched out toward heaven? As long as those hands were lifted, Joshua prevailed in the plain below. Even so, the uplifted hands of faith bring Omnipotence itself into the fray. The Eternal God is our refuge, and when foes rage, we need not fear their fury.
Cast yourself upon the bare arm of God. Fight this complaint not with mere words, but by pleading the name of Jesus. That name is Jehovah-Nissi, the Lord our Banner, and they who trust in it shall never be put to shame. If you will keep close to Scripture, and wield that sword, “It is written,” the adversary cannot gain the victory over you. The promise stands sure: underneath are the everlasting arms. Though the refund seems delayed, and the adversary presses hard, you shall yet in the hour of extremity win the victory.
And what a master-weapon is this urgent prayer of yours! Our Lord Jesus has already won the decisive battle at Calvary. His single arm achieved what all the hosts of men could not, He crushed the head of the serpent and led captivity captive. Because He poured out His soul unto death, He now divides the spoil with the strong. The victory He gained is substantial, and His people share in the fruit of it. Therefore, as one united to Him by faith, you are more than a conqueror through Him that loved you. The complaint, the pounds, the compensation, these are small matters to the King who owns the cattle on a thousand hills.
Yet He stoops to regard them. When God turns in a way of grace toward His people, He often comes flying on the wings of the wind, displaying His favour richly and swiftly. He can grant you such supernatural favour that the matter is settled before you expect it. But, beloved, even if the answer tarries, do not let go. The hour needs its man, and God means to use you; He will honour those who honour Him. Let your confidence rest not in the pounds, but in the God who gives you the victory over every foe. Keep praying until the answer comes. Jesus wins the victory, and He will glorify His people in the outcome, whether by a swift refund or by some better mercy. Only cling to Him, and the battle is already won.
