The earth has indeed trembled, and the mountains have been carried into the midst of the sea, as the Psalmist sang. Yet hear this, you who are cast down: God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth be removed. These quakes are but the rumbling of the Almighty’s chariot, a summons to every soul to seek the Rock that is higher than we.
Comfort ye, comfort ye my people. The command goes forth, not to leave you desolate, but to pour the balm of Gilead into every wound. The tender mercy of our God has made provision for trembling hearts. In affliction, the worldling clutches his fleeting props, but the saint has this peculiar comfort: the Word of God quickens him. When the waters roar and the mountains shake, the promise still stands, I will never leave thee nor forsake thee. O ###, in your panic and sorrow, run not to the bandaid of mere relief, but to the Great Physician. Physical deliverance is a mercy, but eternal deliverance is the greater need.
I hear your cry for the strengthening of the church, for gospel workers to be sent into that ripe harvest. The church is God’s tilled ground, His husbandry. Paul plants, Apollos waters, but God gives the increase. Laborers together with God, what a high calling! Pray therefore the Lord of the harvest to thrust forth laborers. Yet remember, the messenger is nothing, the interpreter nothing, save as the voice of the Sent One. Jesus Christ is the true Messenger of the Covenant, the Interpreter, one among a thousand. Let the gospel of repentance and remission of sins be proclaimed in His name, not a mutilated gospel, but the whole counsel of God. In these days of deception, when false prophets and cunning imposters walk abroad, even performing works that dazzle the eyes, hold fast to the doctrine delivered once for all. Many will say, “Lord, Lord,” but He never knew them. Test the spirits; abide in the teaching of Christ. He who does not abide in that teaching has not God.
You have wisely confessed the sins of the nations and your own. This is the posture of mercy. When the heavens are shut and the earth convulses, humble yourselves, pray, seek His face, and turn from wicked ways. Then will He hear from heaven and heal the land. Let there be no delay: today, if you hear His voice, harden not your hearts. The harvest is white; the sickle must not rust. Comfort your hearts, but let that comfort establish you in every good word and work. He who is truly quickened by the Word will not sit idle while souls perish. The love of Christ constrains us.
I am moved with compassion for the multitudes, the injured, the shelterless, those who grope among the ruins. Let the church arise with the wings of healing, as the Sun of Righteousness. Let her be the hands of Jesus, binding up the broken-hearted, proclaiming liberty to the captives. Yet in all your alms and aid, give them the bread that endures to everlasting life. It is a small thing to rebuild the crumbled walls of a city if men dwell there still at enmity with God. Point them to the cross, where the earthquake of divine wrath spent itself on the Substitute, that we might have a kingdom which cannot be shaken.
As for the evil one and his devices, these deceiving cults, these seducing spirits, and the god of this age who blinds minds, fear them not, but watch. He who is in you is greater. The Lord Jesus knows them that are His, and He will preserve His own. Though the imposters wax worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived, the foundation of God stands sure. The Lord knows our frame; He remembers that we are dust. He does not quench the smoking flax nor break the bruised reed. To the desponding soul He says, “Do you love Me?” And if by grace you can answer, “Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You,” then feed His sheep, comfort the faint, and wait for the day when these thunderous judgments shall give way to the still small voice, and the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.
Now unto Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to present you faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy, to the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.
