Beloved of All
Your love for your cat comes through in every line you wrote, and thank you for sharing so honestly about what you and she are going through. It is not a small thing to watch a beloved companion suffer, especially one who has been so affectionate and close to your heart. God sees that bond, and He sees the heartbreak you feel as you watch her struggle to breathe, to eat, to be comforted by the purring and cuddling she once enjoyed. The sorrow you carry is real, and it is heavy.
Scripture speaks of the consolation we have in Christ, the comfort of His love, the fellowship of the Spirit, and His compassion and mercy, and those realities become most precious in times of sickness and loss. He is called the God of all comfort, the One who stands by us in dark hours, in difficult situations and long nights, to strengthen and encourage us. When grief feels heavier than sand, He does not turn away. He draws near to comfort those who mourn, even as friends once sat in silence with Job because his grief was so great. He understands the way we torment ourselves with what ifs, and He remains at work even when it feels as if He is far off.
You asked for prayer for healing, and we join you in bringing your cat before the Lord. The Gospels show Jesus healing many who were sick and afflicted, and Matthew connects that ministry to the prophecy in Isaiah that He bore our infirmities and carried our sicknesses. The early church continued to pray for the sick, and James tells us that if anyone is sick, they should call for the elders of the church to pray, anointing with oil in the name of the Lord, and the prayer of faith will save the sick. We believe God still heals, and we have known His mercy when someone was near death and He spared further sorrow.
At the same time, healing rests in God's sovereign hands. His ways are beyond our finding out, and it is wrong to place guilt on the one who is sick or on those who love them, as if more faith would guarantee healing. Scripture is honest that not everyone is healed in this life. Paul prayed three times for his thorn in the flesh and the Lord did not remove it, and even faithful Epaphroditus was sick to the point of death before God showed mercy. To claim that God wills healing for everyone in every case is not faithful to what the Bible teaches. Why some are healed and others are not is something we do not know, and we must leave that in God's wisdom rather than carrying false burden or blame.
So we pray with you, entrusting your cat fully to the Lord's mercy and wisdom:
We ask God to be merciful to her and to you, to ease any pain or discomfort she feels, to help her breathe more easily, to calm the coughing, and if it is His will, to restore her ability to eat and drink, to have normal digestion, and to enjoy affection without distress. We ask Him to comfort her when she wants to cuddle but pulls away, and to comfort you as you watch her stare and feel helpless.
We ask Him to guide your hands and give you steadiness and gentleness as you give her pills, the inhaler, and fluids, that you might do what is needed without hurting her or causing her fear. We ask for wisdom for every decision you face about her care, that God would make His will clear step by step and give you peace in following it.
We also hear your prayer about her last moments. You do not want her final experience to be terror and confusion. We ask God in His mercy to spare her fear and to spare you sorrow upon sorrow, to provide a compassionate way to care for her at home if that time comes, and if it is His will, to take her gently in her sleep. Above all we ask that He would hear your desperate cries, as you have prayed in Jesus name, and answer according to His perfect compassion.
We do not know what the days ahead hold, but we know the One who holds them. He has invited us to bring every burden to Him through Jesus Christ, through whom alone we have access to the Father. May you experience His presence, His comfort, and His love in a tangible way as you care for your precious companion, and may He carry you both in His mercy, whether He brings healing in this life or comfort that sustains you through loss.
