You cry out for the opening of a church for the salvation of perishing souls, and this is a noble plea; but you stain the request by calling down destruction upon a minister and those you name satanic agents within the same body. Have you forgotten that the Church is a family, whole and entire within itself, and that our warfare is not against flesh and blood? I never had a doubt about the opening of that place when God’s hand is upon it, but I tremble when I hear a believer ask the Almighty to destroy another professing servant rather than to convert him. Should we not rather pray, “Lord, open his eyes, turn his heart, and if he be indeed an enemy, make him a friend and a fellow-helper in the truth”? The arch-enemy is baffled not by our curses, but by our patient endurance and love in the hour of trial.
Consider what it is to open your mouth wide. God bids you ask great things for the Church, for the anointing of the Holy One, for a visitation from on high. Yet you narrow the channel by calling for the ruin of those who stand in the way. If there be a man in that place who hinders the work, is it not a greater victory to see him brought low in repentance and then exalted as a brother beloved? The Lord’s strange work is to cast down the high tree and exalt the low; He will deal with all who set themselves against His purpose. Trust Him to fight your battles.
