Disciple of Prayer
Update: My son was assigned 2 public defenders whom have not spoken to him yet. He had a pretrial court appearance, nothing took place, it was rescheduled. I feel weak but I know I need to be spiritually strong to continue praying and fasting. I am praying and fasting for mercy on his sentence because I now know something is wrong down inside for him to get to this point.

Dear Saints,

I come before you with a heavy heart. I have asked for prayers for my teenage son last year previously when he had got into legal trouble and needed to be in a juvenile detention center for a short while. I really thought the worst was behind him. He is still a teen but considered an adult now and recently he murdered someone. He sat and waited for the police and complied, but when I saw his mug shot I didn’t even recognize him. I thought he was doing better. I have no idea how or when this “person” came about. The victim was a known pedophile and predator, so I’m not sure if this person abused my son in some way or if he saw something. I am definitely not excusing his behavior, but I am just so confused and searching for answers. I believe my son was under the influence of something, drugs, spirits. He is a baptized believer in Christ and came to be baptized around 9 or 10 years old and we have always been in worship services and Bible study whether it be at home or at church. He began to backslide in earlier teen years but as long as he lived with me, he had to attend church, house rules. I don’t know who he is or what has been influencing him but there is an underlying reason I believe because his dad didn’t forge a relationship with him (we divorced when he was 1 year old). I know my son to be living and kind and good with children and people, always liked in school by teachers and students. I’m praying for the victim’s family although I don’t know why this happened but I am also praying for mercy in my son’s sentencing because something has my son’s mind. I tried to do what I could when I noticed he seemed depressed but nothing I did could reach him, no one could get through to him. I know he has to serve time but I know my son needs help and we need to get to the root of the issue. Even now his dad is not interested in interacting with him - that is cruel too. I think he harbors resentment because I left and divorced him after domestic abuse, I think he has taken it out on my son in a neglectful way. Not to make excuses but I’m just trying to make sense of it all.

We come before the throne of grace with heavy hearts, lifting up your son and this entire situation before the Lord. The pain and confusion you are experiencing are profound, and we stand with you in prayer, seeking God’s mercy, wisdom, and healing for all involved. This is a time to cling to the promises of God, even when the path ahead seems dark and uncertain.

First, we want to acknowledge the gravity of the sin that has taken place. Murder is a grievous offense before God, and Scripture is clear: "You shall not murder" (Exodus 20:13). There is no justification for taking another life, regardless of the victim’s past or actions. While we grieve for the victim’s family and the pain they are enduring, we must also recognize that your son’s actions have brought deep consequences, both legally and spiritually. However, we serve a God who is rich in mercy and slow to anger (Psalm 103:8), and we pray that His grace would intervene in this situation.

We also want to address the spiritual warfare at play here. You mentioned that your son was under the influence of something—drugs, spirits—and we believe this is a critical point. The enemy seeks to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10), and he often targets young people, especially those who have known the Lord but have drifted away. Your son’s backsliding in his teenage years may have opened doors to darkness that he was ill-equipped to handle. The Bible warns us, "Be sober and self-controlled. Be watchful. Your adversary, the devil, walks around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour" (1 Peter 5:8). We must pray aggressively against any spiritual strongholds in his life, rebuking the lies of the enemy and declaring the power of Jesus’ name over him.

It is also important to address the potential for past trauma. You mentioned the victim was a known pedophile and predator, and while this does not excuse your son’s actions, it raises the possibility of deep wounds that may have gone unaddressed. Abuse—whether physical, emotional, or sexual—can leave scars that fester and manifest in destructive ways if not brought to the light of Christ. We pray that if there is any hidden pain in your son’s past, the Holy Spirit would reveal it and bring healing. "He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds" (Psalm 147:3).

The absence of a father figure in your son’s life is another layer of brokenness that cannot be ignored. Scripture tells us that fathers are called to train up their children in the way they should go (Proverbs 22:6), and when that role is neglected or abandoned, it leaves a void that the enemy often exploits. Your ex-husband’s refusal to engage with his son is a form of cruelty, and we must pray that God would soften his heart and bring conviction. However, we also recognize that you have done your best as a mother, and we honor your faithfulness in raising your son in the Lord. Even in this, we trust that God will use your love and prayers to draw your son back to Himself.

We must also address the issue of depression and mental health. You mentioned that your son seemed depressed and that no one could reach him. Depression is a real struggle, but it is not an excuse for sin. The Bible tells us to "cast all your anxieties on Him, because He cares for you" (1 Peter 5:7). If your son was battling depression, it was an opportunity for the body of Christ to rally around him with love, prayer, and biblical counsel. We pray that even now, in the midst of his consequences, he would turn to the Lord and find hope in Him.

Now, we come before the Lord in prayer:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with hearts broken for this family. Lord, we lift up this mother who is pouring out her heart before You, seeking mercy for her son. Father, we ask that You would intervene in this legal situation. We pray for wisdom for the judges, attorneys, and all those involved in the case. We ask that You would soften hearts and grant mercy where it is needed, not because of what this young man has done, but because of Your great love and compassion.

Lord, we pray for the victim’s family. We ask that You would comfort them in their grief and draw them close to You. We pray that they would experience Your peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7). We also pray that they would find it in their hearts to extend forgiveness, even as You have forgiven us.

Father, we rebuke any spiritual strongholds in this young man’s life. We break the power of drugs, darkness, and deception over him in the name of Jesus. We declare that he is a child of God, bought with the blood of Christ, and we pray that he would turn his heart fully back to You. Lord, we ask that You would reveal any hidden wounds or trauma that may have contributed to his actions. Bring healing to his mind, body, and spirit. Restore him, Lord, and use this time of consequence to draw him closer to You.

We pray for this mother, Lord. Strengthen her in her weakness. Fill her with Your peace and give her the endurance to continue praying and fasting. Remind her that You are her refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble (Psalm 46:1). Help her to trust in You, even when the outcome is uncertain.

Lord, we also pray for the father of this young man. Soften his heart, Lord. Convict him of his neglect and draw him into a relationship with his son. Let him see the error of his ways and turn to You for forgiveness and restoration.

Finally, Lord, we pray for the church. Raise up believers who will stand in the gap for this family, offering prayer, support, and biblical counsel. Let this situation be a reminder to all of us of the importance of discipleship, accountability, and love within the body of Christ.

We ask all these things in the mighty name of Jesus, for there is no other name by which we can be saved (Acts 4:12). We trust in Your goodness, Your mercy, and Your power to redeem even the darkest of situations. Amen.

We encourage you to continue standing on God’s promises, even when the road is difficult. This is a time to press into the Lord like never before. Surround yourself with believers who can pray with you and support you. Consider seeking godly counsel from your pastor or a biblical counselor who can help you navigate this season. Remember, God is close to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18), and He will never leave you nor forsake you (Hebrews 13:5). Keep praying, keep fasting, and keep trusting in Him. The battle is not yours, but the Lord’s (2 Chronicles 20:15).

Be a Prayer Warrior: “Praying for others”

We want to thank you from the depths of our hearts for trusting us with this deeply painful and heavy burden you are carrying. It is clear that your love for your son runs so deep, and your heart is breaking not only for what he has done but for the unseen battles he has been fighting alone. We have been lifting you both up daily, pleading for God’s mercy, wisdom, and healing to surround your family.

We have prayed specifically that the Lord would soften the hearts of those involved in your son’s case—that his public defenders would be moved with compassion, that the court would see the brokenness beneath the surface, and that justice would be tempered with grace. We have asked God to reveal any hidden wounds, any unhealed pain, or any spiritual oppression that may have taken root in your son’s life, and we continue to stand in faith for his deliverance and restoration.

We also pray for the victim’s family, that God would comfort them in their grief and bring them peace that surpasses understanding. And for you, dear sister, we ask the Lord to strengthen you when you feel weak, to fill you with His peace when confusion overwhelms you, and to remind you daily that His love for your son is greater than any mistake he has made.

If the Lord has moved in any way since you first shared this—if there has been even a small breakthrough, a moment of clarity, or a glimmer of hope—we would be so encouraged to hear it. But if the weight still feels unbearable and the answers seem distant, please know we are still here, still praying, still believing with you. You are not alone in this.

May the Father wrap His arms around you, may Jesus intercede for your son in ways you cannot yet see, and may the Holy Spirit bring comfort that words cannot express. We will continue to lift this up, trusting that God is at work even in the darkest places. In Jesus’ Name, we pray. Amen.
