Unwanted relationship: honestly exhausted

Anonymous

Beloved of All
I'm reaching out to you because this person in my circle keeps pushing me beyond my limits by insisting that I meet this man I don't love. I have feelings for another man I'd like to get closer to, but this person keeps speaking very badly of him to me without letting me get close to him. There's no proof of what this person is telling me about him, and I even think this person in my circle is telling me all this in the hope that I'll give up on the idea of getting to know him so I'll end up with the one they want for me. I'm tired and fed up with repeating myself; | even wonder if I'm going crazy at times. I just want to be treated like a human being and to be allowed to make my own choices. This makes me aggressive and irritable toward this person, even though I don't want to be, and mean sometimes too-but only because this person refuses to respect me and leave me alone. I don't know what to do anymore, and this person keeps telling me that it's because this man absolutely wants a second chance with me that he keeps bringing him up (for the past year)-even though this man ghosted me in the past without ever really trying to get to know me, BY CHOICE. Now he feels remorse and wants me to give him a second chance. I don't hate him, but I'M IN LOVE WITH SOMEONE ELSE. My current financial situation doesn't allow for certain things. And I'm extremely tired and depressed. Please understand that I take no pleasure in writing these messages and reaching out to you the way I do. I wish things were more normal and that I were at least given the chance to be with the person of my choice, and I feel like that's not being respected. Is this situation normal, or am I just lacking judgment? I never wanted things to turn out this way, nor did I want to hear negative things said about the man I care about. I want to get to know him sincerely and with all my heart. I'm even afraid that this information might become a barrier between us in the future if something beautiful were ever to happen. It would hurt me deeply if he rejected me for something I had no control over, especially since I had already rejected the idea of being with the man who ghosted me long before I even knew about the person I have feelings for now. I'd also like him to feel free to choose me if he wanted to, and for him to at least have the chance to know how I feel about him. I feel tired, and I don't want to feel pressured into responding to the advances of the man who ghosted me when I don't want to. But again, I don't hate him-it happened years ago, I've forgiven him-but I don't want to move forward with him. I wish him true happiness, a family life, eternal life, and so on, but I don't want to be with him. I'm sorry this is so long, but I have a lot on my mind. It really upsets me. I don't want all of this to come back to haunt me later. Yet I'm sincere in my feelings and I want to stay honest with him-I don't want him to think I was trying to lie to him. It he decides to choose me, l'd like things to work out between us. And as for the person in my circle: I tell myself that if he had respected my consent, it wouldn't have gone this far. I DIDN'T WANT THIS; I JUST WANTED TO BE TREATED LIKE A HUMAN BEING. I also don't want to hurt the feelings of the person that I love or make him feel like he's less important. His name is ###. I want him to be happy and fulfilled with me, and I want to be happy and fulfilled with him, too-no matter what he decides.

We hear the deep exhaustion, frustration, and emotional turmoil in your words, and we want you to know that your feelings are valid. You are not going crazy, you are being pressured in ways that disregard your autonomy, your heart, and your right to make choices about your own life. The Bible affirms that you are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14), and as a child of God, you deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. No one has the right to manipulate or coerce you into a relationship that is not of your choosing.

First, we must address the spiritual weight of this situation. The person in your circle who is pushing you toward someone you do not love is not acting in love or wisdom. Proverbs 27:6 tells us, "Faithful are the wounds of a friend, but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful." If this person claims to care for you, their actions should reflect godly counsel, not control, slander, or emotional manipulation. Their behavior is not aligned with Scripture, and it is right for you to set firm boundaries. Jesus Himself said, "If your right eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out and throw it away from you" (Matthew 5:29). While this is not a call to literal harm, it is a strong warning against allowing toxic influences to persist in your life.

You have already shown wisdom in forgiving the man who ghosted you, but forgiveness does not require reconciliation. You are not obligated to give him a second chance, especially when your heart is elsewhere. Your feelings for ### are real, and it is not wrong to desire a relationship with someone who aligns with your affections, if that relationship is pursued in a way that honors God. However, we must caution you: if your desire for ### is based solely on emotion without considering whether he is a man of godly character, you may be setting yourself up for further heartache. Proverbs 31:30 reminds us, "Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears Yahweh is to be praised." Before pursuing a deeper connection, ask yourself: Does ### love the Lord? Does he exhibit the fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23)? Is he committed to purity and honoring God with his life?

We also must address the financial stress you mentioned. Money struggles can amplify feelings of helplessness, but remember that your worth is not defined by your circumstances. Philippians 4:19 assures us, "My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus." We encourage you to seek godly counsel about your finances, perhaps through a trusted church or Christian financial ministry, but do not let financial pressure push you into a relationship that is not right for you.

Now, let us pray for you:

"Heavenly Father, we come before You on behalf of our sister who is weary and burdened. Lord, You see the pressure she faces, the manipulation, and the emotional exhaustion. We ask that You would be her shield and defender, that You would give her strength to stand firm in her convictions. Father, we rebuke the spirit of control and deception that seeks to influence her life. We declare that no weapon formed against her shall prosper (Isaiah 54:17), and we ask that You would break every chain of manipulation in Jesus’ name.

Lord, we pray for clarity and wisdom. If ### is the man You have for her, we ask that You would open doors for them to connect in a way that honors You. But if he is not, we ask that You would close every door and remove any confusion. Give her discernment to know Your will, and the courage to walk away from anything that does not align with it.

We also pray for the man who ghosted her. Lord, we ask that You would work in his heart, if he is truly repentant, let him seek reconciliation in a way that is healthy and respectful. But if his motives are not pure, we ask that You would remove him from her life completely.

Father, we ask that You would heal her heart from the hurt of being disrespected and controlled. Replace her exhaustion with Your peace, her frustration with Your joy, and her fear with Your perfect love. Surround her with godly friends and mentors who will speak life into her and support her in her walk with You.

Most of all, Lord, we ask that You would be her ultimate satisfaction. Help her to find her identity in You, not in any relationship. May she seek You first above all else (Matthew 6:33), and may Your will be done in her life. We pray all of this in the mighty name of Jesus, Amen."

You are not alone in this. The enemy would love to keep you isolated, confused, and feeling powerless, but God has not abandoned you. Here are some steps you can take:

1. Set Boundaries, You have the right to say no. If this person in your circle continues to pressure you, it may be necessary to distance yourself from them. Proverbs 13:20 says, "Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm."

2. Seek Godly Counsel, Find a mature Christian woman (or couple) who can offer wisdom and prayer support. Proverbs 11:14 tells us, "Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety."

3. Guard Your Heart, If you pursue a relationship with ###, do so with intentionality and prayer. Do not rush into anything without seeking the Lord’s guidance. Proverbs 4:23 warns, "Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it."

4. Trust God’s Timing, If this is meant to be, God will make a way. If not, He has something better. Jeremiah 29:11 reminds us, "For I know the plans I have for you, declares Yahweh, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope."

You are not lacking judgment, you are being tested. But God is faithful, and He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear (1 Corinthians 10:13). Keep your eyes on Him, and He will lead you into His perfect will.

When someone refuses to honor your clear “no,” it’s exhausting, and it can make you question yourself. You are not crazy, and you are not lacking judgment. Wanting to make your own choices, free from coercion, is a deeply human need, and it reflects the dignity God gives each of us. The pressure you’re under isn’t normal or fair, and the frustration you feel is a natural response to having your boundaries trampled again and again. It doesn’t make you mean or aggressive; it means you’ve been pushed past your limit. We hear that you’ve already forgiven the man who ghosted you, and that’s a beautiful thing, but forgiveness doesn’t mean you owe him a relationship. You are allowed to say no and still wish him well. That’s not cold; that’s integrity.

The person in your circle needs to respect your autonomy, but they clearly aren’t. It might help to set a firm, kind boundary: “I’m not going to discuss this again. My decision is final.” If they persist, it’s okay to step back from that relationship for a season to protect your own emotional health. You don’t need to convince them, you just need to live your decision.

About : it’s clear your feelings are sincere. You long for him to have the freedom to choose you, and you’re worried that negative talk could block a real connection. We can’t control what others say, but we can pray that truth and clarity will guard whatever God may have for you both. If this relationship is meant to grow, no gossip will ultimately keep it apart. In the meantime, be gentle with yourself. You mentioned feeling extremely tired and depressed; that kind of emotional weight can settle in your body, too. If this exhaustion lingers, please consider talking with a doctor or a wise counselor. They can help you carry the load practically, while we carry it in prayer.

Lord Jesus, you see this precious woman and the pressure she’s under. Grant her steady peace and renewed strength. Give her wisdom to set healthy boundaries without guilt. Protect her heart and from slander or fear. Guide her steps, grant her rest from this turmoil, and surround her with people who honor her choices and treat her with the dignity she deserves. In your name, Amen.

It is a great evil when any soul is pressed beyond its bounds by the stubborn will of another, and I hear in your words the cry of one truly needing healing. You are not lacking in judgment; rather, you are worn down by a persistent siege against your conscience. This is no feigned grievance, it is a real evil from which you need deliverance. The Lord Jesus did nothing for show, nothing for mere custom, but all His power went forth to those who have true need of healing. He healed them that had need of healing, and your exhausted heart is just such a case.

Consider the friend you describe who pushes without ceasing. A wise friend knows that giving advice congenial for a moment may, by and by, prove an ill turn. To speak badly of the man you esteem without proof, repeating tales to wear down your spirit, this is not the work of a true friend. Christ Jesus is a friend of great intensity and constancy; He never uses manipulation to force the will. You have no duty to surrender your choice to this meddler. The fondest human relationship which might be lost by firm decision for what is right shall be more than made up by union with Jesus Himself. Better an ounce of divine grace than a ton of worldly peace bought by servile compliance. Stand firm. Fix your foot down and be steadfast and unflinching, for occasions will come before you win your crown when you must do so for truth’s sake.

As for the man who ghosted you and now seeks a second chance, you have rightly forgiven him. Yet forgiveness does not create obligation. You say, “I DO NOT WANT TO MOVE FORWARD WITH HIM,” and this is an honest conclusion. You owe him no courtship. You are not his savior; Christ is. The expectation of the poor and needy shall not perish forever; God has not appointed this pressured path to be your lot.

Concerning your love for the other man, whose name you treasure, you must bring even this affection to the pierced heart of Jesus. Deep need for healing goes with us daily, proving itself in actual sin, and aggressive irritability which you lament is evidence of that need. The Lord must daily save us from ourselves, for if He leaves us we need no devil to destroy us; we prove devils to our own selves. Therefore pour out this longing before the throne of grace, not demanding that God comply with your will, but pleading that He would direct every step. He who is married unto His people in a covenant of love delights for us to ask, “What can I do for You?” Let your honest desire be laid where the blood has freely flowed. You need not beg as though cleansing were hardly obtained by importunity; it flows still.

The man you care for must also look freely upon Christ, and if any union is to be, it must be founded upon that mutual look at the wounds which were endured for our crimes. Better to pine with Lazarus than feast with Dives, for the love of God more than compensates for temporary disadvantages. Keep no secrets from Him who is the very friend you need, and commit your way to Him who can melt the heart and make the path straight.
