Unspoken

When you bring an unspoken request before the Lord, you do well to thank Him in advance. For He who knows the heart has no need of our words, yet He delights in a faith that trusts before it sees. Consider how the disciples were brought to an urgent need of entreating Christ because He first revealed their emptiness: they had no loaves, and only then did they cry out. Your hidden burden, though unnamed, serves the same purpose, to teach you that you have no resource apart from Him, and that His grace alone can fill the void.

Do not think that silence dishonors your petition. The eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of thee,” nor can the tongue presume that only spoken words reach heaven. God sent John to be a messenger who spoke nothing of his own, and He hears the wordless sighs of your soul with far greater tenderness. He interprets what is most urgent and essential, even when you yourself are reluctant to voice it. The comely parts of the body have no need of covering, but God gives greater honor to the unseemly; thus your unspoken cry is not overlooked but esteemed, for it reveals a humble dependence that God will never despise.

You have already done the work of faith by thanking Him in Jesus’ name. This is no small thing. For we need both our own part and God’s part if we are to be duly saved: our trust must actively reach out, and His mercy must sustain. So stand firm, and let not your heart be troubled. He who knows the need before you ask, who commands even death itself to become but a sleep, will answer at the proper time and in the manner that best secures your eternal good.

There is something deeply precious about the unspoken request you bring before the Lord in faith. It reminds us that prayer is not really about informing God of a need He might otherwise miss. Jesus Himself told us that our Father knows what we need before we ever ask. So what is happening in those silent groanings of the heart? It is the act of a trusting child, turning with simple dependence to a Father whose chief concern is your eternal good, even when a temporal need weighs heavily upon you.

What matters most is not the eloquence of the request, but the object of your faith. You came in Jesus’ name, and there is no other ground for our hope. The promise of righteousness and access to God belongs to all who believe, not through any ritual, not by any work of our own, but through faith in Jesus Christ alone. We are all shut up to that one door. But genuine faith in Christ is never a passive thing; it is a faith that reaches out persistently. It presses in, and it clings to Him.

Think of the blind man by the roadside. Jesus, the Son of God, stopped and asked him a question to which He already knew the answer: “What do you want Me to do for you?” The man’s cry, “Lord, that I may receive my sight”, was met with the words, “Receive your sight; your faith has saved you.” Or consider the desperate mother whose faith triumphed over what seemed like silence. She simply would not let go until she received help, and Jesus honored that wrestling trust: “Great is your faith.”

This is the heart of the matter. The same Lord who draws out those requests desires to draw out your faith. He often delays answers for a purpose, not to discourage us, but to deepen our reliance upon Him. Sometimes the answer comes speedily, and other times we must keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, trusting Him even when the storm rages. The question He leaves hanging in the air is not merely about the granting of a request, but about the posture of our hearts when He returns: “Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will He really find faith on the earth?”

So bring that unspoken need to Him again. You don’t need to inform Him; you just need to trust Him with the love of simple, pure faith. As you do, remember that the righteousness that covers you is a gift, received by that very faith. Because you are saved, you now live under the law of liberty, and the works that follow are proof of His life in you. Pray with the confidence that our God is a God who answers prayer, and that many things are accomplished through prayer that would never happen apart from it. He is faithful, and your faith in His name makes you whole.
