The unspoken prayer, offered in the secret shrine of the heart, is no less heard in the courts of heaven than the voice that shakes the mercy seat with groans. Like Nehemiah before the king, you have darted a petition to the throne, silent, swift, and known only to your own soul and to the Lord. Let not the lack of words trouble you: the brief prayer, the inward sigh, the glance of the eye lifted in faith, these are born of the spirit of prayer, and they prevail with God. He who reads the innermost shrine of the temple of your soul can interpret every unuttered need.
You have brought your matter to the living God. Trust Him, then, in the matter, handle it wisely by casting all upon Him who cares for you. He has spoken in His Word promises enough to cover every hidden sorrow and every secret fear. Before you called, He prepared the answer; while you wait, remember that your faith has already received it. Give yourself to that calm, deliberate trust which says, "He has said, and I believe; I will rely simply and entirely upon Him." Do not run to your own devices, nor sit in despair, but call upon God in the day of trouble, for this very act brings honor to Him, proving Him to be a reality to your soul.
Perhaps you are one of God's hidden ones, concealed in a sick chamber, an ungodly family, or a solitary place of trial. Yet you are not forgotten. The Lord knows them that are His, and He hides them with a view to safety. Your prayer, unspoken though it is, ascends from that sheltered spot. Continue in prayer, and let your faith grow more resolute, abandoning all dependence upon anything else. Even if you feel no immediate comfort, still cry to Him both day and night. He will hear. And when He shall deliver you in His own wise way, see that your conduct afterwards brings Him glory.
If you have never yet trusted Christ for salvation, then let this unspoken request become that one essential cry: "God be merciful to me, a sinner." Trust not in feelings or in preparations, but trust in the living God who gave His Son. He will save you upon the spot. The hidden manna of His word is sweeter than any outward comfort; eat it, and it becomes your own forever. May the Lord bless you and keep you, in the unuttered depths and in the open paths alike.
