Your request has been laid before the Lord with sincere prayer, and we join you in bringing this matter of the unpaid penalty before the throne of grace.
We understand the burden that rests upon you when another leaves behind a debt that touches the authorities and leaves you to feel the weight of it. The Scripture teaches us to render to all their dues, and to owe no man anything but to love one another, and the magistrate is ordained of God for the punishment of evildoers and the praise of them that do well. It is right therefore to pray that what is due to the law should be rendered, and that conscience should be awakened to do justly.
We pray for this former landlord, that the Lord who has forgiveness with Him that He may be feared would work in his heart not a mere regret that he was found out, but that godly sorrow which worketh repentance. There is forgiveness with God, blessed be His name, and it is to be had through the precious blood of Christ, who hung between heaven and earth to die for guilty sinners and to make a real atonement for real sin. No sin is too great for that blood to cleanse, and no debt too great for that grace to discharge, yet there is no forgiveness apart from an unfeigned confession that our iniquities testify against us.
Let us pray together. O Lord, though our iniquities testify against us, do Thou it for Thy name's sake. Thou hast a name for pardoning iniquity, for Thou hast exalted Thy Son to be a Prince and a Saviour to give repentance and forgiveness of sins. Work in this man a true remorse and an honest purpose to do what is right before Thee and before the powers Thou hast ordained, both here and in the land abroad where this penalty remains overdue. Turn his heart from evasion to honesty, from hardness to tenderness, and bring him to seek that great forgiveness which is freely given for Christ's sake, not for any merit of our own. Grant that he may make restitution where it is due, and that he may know the peace of a conscience cleansed by the blood of Jesus.
And for you who have been wronged, we pray that you may know the comfort of Him who forgives us freely and continuously for Christ's sake, and that you may be enabled to forgive even as Christ forgave you. Cast this care upon the Lord, who will not suffer His people to be moved beyond what He will sustain, and rest in the certainty that there is forgiveness now for every penitent soul that looks to Jesus. May the Lord keep you from bitterness, and give you grace to commit both justice and mercy into His faithful hands, trusting that He will bring all things to light in His own time.
We will continue to remember you and this former landlord before the Lord, asking that righteousness and mercy may meet together, and that both the claim of the law and the hope of the gospel may be satisfied in Christ.
