We have heard your request and we join you in bringing this matter before the Lord, who is both just and merciful, and who alone can work that true repentance which is unto life.
We pray not for a carnal repentance that comes only from fear of judgment or dread of penalty, for such repentance is of the flesh and after the manner of sinful nature. Judgment may alarm a man, yet leave his heart unchanged. What we ask of God for this former landlord is that holy, healthy, heavenly repentance which is worked in the renewed heart by the Holy Spirit, the repentance which is the gift of God and is preached in the name of Jesus.
True repentance gives God glory. It confesses that His justice is unimpeachable, even though it condemns us, and says with a sincere heart, Lord, if Thou shouldst deal with me according to my desert I could not murmur against Thee. It sees sin as truly sinful, abhors it because it is committed against so holy and so good a God, and looks out of self to Christ alone for remission. Where there is such godly sorrow, there is the full and free forgiveness of sins through the blood of Christ, in whom justice has been satisfied, that God might be just and yet the justifier of him that believes.
Therefore we pray that the goodness of God may lead this man to repentance, drawing him rather than merely driving him, and that his repentance may be practical and lasting, yielding works meet for repentance. It is a good and right thing to pray for another person to come to a true sense of responsibility, and to seek that justice be done. Scripture teaches that God is both merciful and just. He shows longsuffering and calls each person to repentance, and He has also ordained lawful authority and courts of justice for the ordering of society. To leave a penalty unpaid when it is owed is to leave a debt to justice unsettled.
We pray that God would work in your former landlord a godly sorrow, not merely regret or tears that pass without change, but the sorrow that works repentance unto salvation and brings no regret. True repentance is shown not only in feeling but in turning and in bearing fruit, in doing what is right to set matters straight. As you asked, we pray that he would be convicted in his conscience and take the necessary steps to resolve this penalty with the police, both here and where it remains overdue abroad.
We also remember that if a person continues without turning, he stores up wrath for himself against the day when God's righteous judgment will be revealed, when each will receive according to his deeds. For that reason we do not pray lightly, but with urgency, asking for mercy now while there is time to repent and make amends.
