Unforgiveness

We hear your heart in this request and we thank you for sharing so honestly with us. We praise God with you that He has been helping you in this struggle with unforgiveness, and we understand how exhausting it is when the testing feels continuous and difficult. We want to lift you up together before the throne of grace.
We know that unforgiveness is a heavy burden to carry, and the Lord calls us to lay it down not because the hurt was not real, but because we have been so greatly forgiven ourselves. Scripture tells us, And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you. Ephesians 4:32 and Bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do. Colossians 3:13. We are commanded to forgive from the heart, not seven times, but as Jesus said to him, I don't tell you until seven times, but, until seventy times seven. Matthew 18:22. This is not to minimize what was done against you, but to free you from the bitterness and bondage that unforgiveness brings. The Lord also warns us, For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you don't forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. Matthew 6:14-15. So we gently rebuke the holding onto unforgiveness in our own hearts, as we all must, and we encourage you to choose forgiveness as an act of obedience and faith, even when the feelings have not yet caught up. Forgiveness is releasing the person and the debt to God and trusting Him to be the just judge.
We also hear how very tired you are, and our Father cares deeply about your weariness. Jesus invites us, Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28. He gives power to the faint and to him who has no might he increases strength. Isaiah 40:29. The trials you are facing around forgiveness are not wasted. God is using them to refine you and to make you more like Christ, and He will provide the strength for each test as you lean on Him and not on your own strength.
We noticed you spoke of God helping you, but you did not mention the name of Jesus, and we want to lovingly remind you that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and that we are saved. Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. John 14:6 and There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved. Acts 4:12. It is because Jesus died for our sins and rose again that we can be forgiven and can then forgive others. If you have not already, we encourage you to put your full trust in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, believing in His name for forgiveness and for daily grace to obey Him.

Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ and we lift up this dear one to You. Thank You for the work You have already begun in their heart regarding unforgiveness. We ask You to continue that good work and to give them supernatural strength and willingness to forgive as You in Christ have forgiven them. Lord, where there is hurt, bitterness, or lingering resentment, bring healing and soften the heart. Help them to release every offense to You and to trust Your justice and Your mercy. Father, they are very tired and tested, so we ask You to give them rest, to renew their strength, and to fill them with Your peace that surpasses understanding. Pour out Your Holy Spirit to comfort them, to teach them, and to empower them to walk in obedience even when it is difficult. Remind them daily of how much they have been forgiven through the blood of Jesus, so that forgiveness can flow freely through them. We ask this in the mighty and saving name of Jesus, amen.
We encourage you to stay in the Word daily, to bring each painful memory to the Lord in prayer and choose again to forgive, and to ask the Holy Spirit to help you when you feel you cannot. God sees your struggle, He is not disappointed in your weariness, and He is faithful to complete what He has started. Keep drawing near to Jesus, and He will give you the grace to forgive and the rest your soul needs.

One thing that helps many people is to see that forgiveness has two parts that move at different speeds. There is the quiet decision to release the debt, to not pursue revenge or avoidance, and to intend to treat the other person as someone made in God's image. Then there is the slower work in the heart, where resentment, bitterness and fear are gradually eased and replaced with more peace. That second part rarely happens all at once. It can rise and fall with the day or with a fresh reminder, and feeling the ache return does not mean your decision was not real.
Forgiveness also does not automatically mean rebuilding the relationship. You can make a sincere decision before God while still needing wisdom about boundaries.
When a wave of unforgiveness comes, it may help to simply pause and remind yourself gently, I have made my decision before God, and I am asking Him to keep tending to my emotions over time. No need to argue with the feeling or to shame yourself for it, just name it honestly to Him and let Him carry it again in that moment. If you have a trusted pastor or counselor, sharing this tiredness with them can lighten the load as well.
Father, we lift our friend to You in Jesus' name. You see the weariness and the desire to walk in Your way. Give rest today, steady the heart when it is tested, and keep doing Your quiet healing work in Your time. Grant wisdom for each step and the comfort of knowing You are near. Amen.

Your weariness in this struggle is known to the Lord, and He hears the honest cry of a heart that desires to forgive yet finds the burden heavy. To tremble and to desire to do what is right before God, even while tired and sorely tested, is itself a mark of His grace at work in you, and He who has helped you hitherto will not leave you now.
Remember what is set before us in the gospel, there is forgiveness with God. It is a divine forgiveness, I, even I, am He that blotteth out thy transgressions. It is surprising forgiveness, so surprising that it is repeated lest any should doubt it, and it is complete forgiveness. When a man trusts Christ, his sin is so entirely gone that it is as though it had never been, the record of debt nailed to the cross. It is also a continuous and eternal forgiveness. He not only forgave us at the first all our sins, but He continues daily to forgive, and the gifts and calling of God are without repentance. Where the offense went, from that very place the forgiveness comes, with God Himself through Jesus Christ, the Just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God. Let this whisper drive away despair. There is forgiveness, there is forgiveness now, at this moment, for whatever your sins may have been.
And because we have in Him such full and perfect forgiveness, we are called to the pattern set before us, even as Christ forgave you, so also do you. This forgiveness of those who trespass against us is gloriously ennobling. Revenge is paltry, forgiveness is great minded. It is a joint stock business of mutual forgiveness, and those who have received so much manifest forgiveness will find it more natural to open their hands to forgive others. This does not make the wrong light, but it declares that the grace you have received is greater still, and that grace can flow through you by His Spirit, not by your own strength.
May the Lord give you rest in His own complete pardon and strength for each test that tries you. I pray that He will bring your heart to find help where you have labored and fallen, that He will keep you from despair, that He will make His forgiveness so sweet and certain to your soul that you may, in His power, forgive even as you have been forgiven. May He soften what is hard, heal what is wounded, and make you more like Christ in this costly and Christlike grace.
