Unforgiveness

Dhitlor

Good and Faithful Servant
Please pray for me as God has been working on me with unforgiveness lately but I'm really struggling right now and feel I am being tested. Thank you.

We hear your heart, dear one, and we stand with you in this battle against unforgiveness. The Lord has been faithful to reveal this struggle to you, and we know the enemy would love nothing more than to keep you bound in bitterness, resentment, and pain. But we declare that this is not your portion! The Word tells us in Ephesians 4:31-32, "Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander be removed from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you." Forgiveness is not a feeling, it is a choice, an act of obedience to God, and a reflection of the grace He has so freely given us.

We recognize that the testing you’re experiencing is real, but we also know that God does not allow us to be tested beyond what we can bear (1 Corinthians 10:13). The enemy may whisper lies that forgiveness means excusing the wrong done to you or that the person who hurt you doesn’t "deserve" it. But we rebuke those lies in the name of Jesus! Forgiveness is not about the other person, it’s about your freedom. Unforgiveness is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die. It only harms you, not them. The Lord desires to heal your heart and restore your peace, but you must release this burden to Him.

We also want to gently remind you that forgiveness does not always mean reconciliation, especially if the relationship is unsafe or unrepentant. Sometimes, forgiveness means letting go of the desire for vengeance or justice and trusting God to handle it. Romans 12:19 says, "Don’t seek revenge yourselves, beloved, but give place to God’s wrath. For it is written, ‘Vengeance belongs to me; I will repay, says the Lord.’" You can forgive and still set boundaries. You can release the offense and still walk in wisdom.

Let us pray for you now:

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus, lifting up our brother/sister who is struggling with unforgiveness. Lord, we thank You for Your faithfulness in revealing this area of their heart to them. We ask that You would fill them with Your Holy Spirit and grant them the strength to choose forgiveness, even when it feels impossible. Father, we rebuke the spirit of bitterness, resentment, and unforgiveness that is trying to take root in their life. We declare that they are not a slave to these emotions but are set free by the blood of Jesus!

Lord, we ask that You would heal their wounds and replace their pain with Your peace. Help them to see the person who hurt them through Your eyes, broken, in need of grace, just as we all are. Give them the courage to release this burden to You and to trust You with the outcome. We pray that You would guard their heart from the enemy’s lies and fill them with Your truth. Remind them that forgiveness is a gift they give themselves, not the other person. May they experience the freedom and joy that comes from walking in obedience to You.

We also pray for the person who caused the hurt. If they are unrepentant, we ask that You would soften their heart and draw them to Yourself. If they have already sought forgiveness, we ask that You would restore what was broken and bring healing to both parties. Lord, we know that You are a God of justice, and we trust You to make all things right in Your time.

Finally, Father, we ask that You would fill our brother/sister with Your love and remind them of the forgiveness You have so freely given them. May they extend that same grace to others, just as You have commanded. We thank You for Your faithfulness and for the victory that is already theirs in Christ Jesus. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

We encourage you to meditate on these scriptures as you continue to walk through this process:
- Matthew 6:14-15: "For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you don’t forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses."
- Colossians 3:13: "Bear with one another, and forgive each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do."
- Psalm 147:3: "He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds."

Remember, dear one, that this is a journey, and it’s okay to take it one step at a time. You don’t have to do this alone, lean on the Lord, and allow Him to carry you through. We are standing with you in prayer, believing that God will complete the good work He has begun in you (Philippians 1:6). Keep pressing into Him, and don’t give up. The breakthrough is coming!

Thank you for being honest about where you are. Wanting to forgive while still feeling the sting is a difficult tension, and it makes sense that it feels like a test right now.

One thing that has helped many of us is understanding that forgiveness often happens in two layers. There is a quiet decision to let go of holding the debt and to stop pursuing revenge or avoidance, and then there is the slower softening of the heart where resentment, anger and fear gradually loosen. The decision can be made in a moment, even while the emotions still rise and fall with the day. Struggling with those feelings does not mean your decision was not real.

When that heaviness comes back, it can help to simply and privately reaffirm the decision you have already made before God, and to hand the outcome to Him again, without pressing yourself to feel a certain way right away or to rebuild a relationship you are not ready for.

We are grateful God is at work in you and we want to keep praying for you as you walk this out.

Father, we lift our friend to You in Jesus name. Give wisdom and quiet strength for each moment of testing, soften what is sore, and help the heart find rest in Your grace and care. Lead step by step and draw near with Your peace. Amen.

Your honest confession has been heard and we have brought it before the Lord in prayer, thanking Him that He has been working in your heart even in this painful struggle.

To feel the weight of unforgiveness and to know you are being tested is no small thing. The Lord often brings down the heart with labor and lets us feel how hard our own heart can be, not to condemn us, but to show us our need of His grace. Do not be surprised that the battle is strong, for forgiveness is a great and divine work.

Remember first what forgiveness you have received. There is forgiveness with God, and it is a complete and surprising forgiveness. It is not a partial settlement but an absolute forgiveness of the debt, as when a creditor destroys the tally and nails the record of your debt to the Cross. When a repenting sinner trusts in Christ, the Lord gives absolute forgiveness, without condition except faith in His Son, and the gifts and calling of God are without repentance. He does not forgive and afterwards accuse. He not only forgave you at the first, but He continues daily to forgive, for the act of forgiveness is a continuous and eternal one. As one of old said to Martin Luther in his dark distress, believe in the forgiveness of sins for yourself. Say with the Creed, I believe in the forgiveness of sins, and take it to your own soul now, whatever your past has been. There is forgiveness now, at this moment, through Jesus Christ who died, the Just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God.

It is out of that fountain that you will find strength to forgive another. The pattern set before us is this, Even as Christ forgave you, so also do you. Admire not only the forgiveness He bestows but the way in which He forgives, with such loving kindness, so complete that your sin is gone as though it had never been. When you have tasted so much manifest forgiveness, to forgive ought to become as natural as to open your hands. It is a joint work of mutual forgiveness among the people of God, and members of Christ's body should take large shares in it, forgiving one another.

This does not mean the wound was small or that the wrong did not matter. It means you look to the Cross where your own great debt was cancelled, and you ask the Lord to make His forgiveness in you the power to forgive. Revenge is paltry, but forgiveness is great minded and gloriously ennobling, and wherever true forgiveness comes, there comes with it a turning from sin and a fresh desire to seek God's pleasure and not our own.

So we pray for you now, that the whisper, There is forgiveness, would drive away despair and give you assurance, and that the same grace would flow through you to others.

Our Father, we thank You that there is forgiveness with You through the blood of Your Son. We ask for our brother and sister who feels tested and weary in this struggle with unforgiveness. Give a fresh sense of Your complete pardon, let the record nailed to the Cross be seen clearly by faith, and let Your continuous mercy soften the heart. Grant grace to forgive even as Christ has forgiven, not by mere resolve but by Your Spirit working within. Bring freedom from bitterness and make the heart tender, that Your name may be feared and loved. Keep this soul near to Jesus and perfect Your work in due time. In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ we ask it, Amen.

Be encouraged to keep looking to Christ, to confess your need honestly before Him each day, and to ask Him for the will and power to release that debt as you have been released. He who has begun this good work will not leave you where you are.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Your honesty in bringing this struggle before God and before others is itself a step toward healing. Feeling tested in the area of unforgiveness is painful, and God is indeed working in you as you become aware of it.

Scripture teaches that we who ask for forgiveness have already received a great mercy, far greater than any wrong done to us. Like the servant who owed an unpayable debt and was forgiven everything when his master was moved with compassion, we have been forgiven much more than we could ever repay. Remembering how much we have been forgiven helps us become grateful and softens the heart toward those who have wronged us. It is good to name our own offenses plainly before God, not hiding them, so that we know the greatness of the gift we have received and learn to be thankful.

Unforgiveness left untended becomes a root of bitterness. A bitter root cannot bear sweet fruit. It fills the heart with harshness and makes it hard for gentleness and peace to grow. When we hold onto it, we close our hearts to the work of the Holy Spirit, who desires to make us kind and tender hearted, forgiving one another as God in Christ forgave us. When bitterness and anger are driven away and we choose kindness and forgiveness, there is nothing to hinder the Spirit from coming and filling our hearts, and then the way of virtue becomes much simpler.

So I pray for you now that God will give you strength to release this burden. I pray that He will teach you to have a gentle and human soul and train you in all gentleness. May He help you to drive bitterness from your heart and to fill it with kindness and mercy. May He bring to your mind the blessedness of those whose iniquities are forgiven and whose sins are covered, and may that memory empower you to forgive as you have been forgiven. May He guard you in this time of testing and make the way of obedience possible by His Spirit within you.

Continue to bring this struggle to Him in prayer, honestly and specifically, and ask Him to form you day by day. He is faithful to complete the work He has begun in you, and there is great reward in learning to forgive, for in forgiving we ourselves are freed from having our own offenses held against us.

Thank you for sharing this so honestly. The very fact that God is working on your heart in this area is evidence of His grace, even though the struggle feels heavy and the testing feels real right now.

Jesus taught that forgiveness is not about keeping count. When Peter asked if forgiving seven times was enough, Jesus answered with seventy times seven. His point was not to give a new number to track, but to show that forgiveness is a matter of the heart and spirit. If you try to count to that number you will lose count long before you get there. God wants us to have a forgiving spirit, not a record book. He illustrated this with the story of a king who forgave his servant an enormous debt, to show how much we have been forgiven.

That is why true forgiveness must come from the heart. It is easy to say words like I forgive you but I will never forget, yet that is not real forgiveness. It is like burying something you intend to dig up again later when you need it. Human forgiveness is often incomplete in that way, but God's forgiveness is not. When God forgives, it is total and complete. He washes and cleanses, He blots out the transgression, and He does not bring it up again. Scripture says though sins are as scarlet they shall be as white as snow, and that all transgressions will not be mentioned again. To be justified means God treats you as though you had never sinned. That is the full pardon He gives through Jesus Christ.

Because we have received that kind of complete forgiveness, we are called to follow His example. We are to forgive as God for Christ's sake has forgiven us, and to walk in love as Christ loved us and gave Himself for us. This is even woven into the prayer Jesus taught us to pray, forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. Of all the requests in that prayer, the only one Jesus went on to explain further was this one, saying if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive yours. It shows how serious and central a forgiving heart is to our walk with God, and it is also a key to peace of mind and health of soul. Holding on to bitterness only poisons us.

You cannot create this kind of forgiveness on your own, and God does not expect you to. In His command He also provides the ability, but willingness is required. You can come to Him honestly and pray, Father, give me a spirit of forgiveness, take away this bitterness and this unforgiving heart, and help me to forgive from the heart as You have forgiven me. Acknowledge before Him where bitterness has taken root rather than excusing it, and ask Him to cleanse you and change you. He is merciful and abundantly pardons those who confess and turn to Him.

I am praying for you now, that God will give you that willing heart and fill you with His Spirit of forgiveness. May He lift the weight you are carrying, heal the hurt that makes forgiving feel so difficult, and help you to release fully those who have wronged you, just as you have been fully released in Christ. May He give you strength in this test to choose forgiveness again and again, until it becomes the settled attitude of your heart. In Jesus name, Amen.
