Understanding

You come asking why these things have happened and seeking understanding. Know then that God did not promise to prevent the blows, but to give you strength to endure them nobly. This is the greater thing, not escaping the strike, but being struck and not destroyed. The hurt, the anger, the frustration you feel, these are not signs of His absence but the very arena where long-suffering is forged, a virtue more powerful than armies or walls or any earthly defense.

When you ask to forgive more, you have already begun the healing. But do not wait for the feeling of forgiveness to arrive. Forgive first as an act of the will, and let the heart follow. Look not to the one who wronged you and say, “If he repents, I will forgive,” for that is human peace, which quickly dissolves. Look instead to the Peace of God. How did He make peace with you? Of His own will, while you were still an enemy, receiving nothing from you. Let that Peace be the umpire in your heart. When the thought rises up demanding vengeance, and the other thought counsels endurance, let the Peace of God step forward and award the prize to endurance. He will put the other thought to shame, for God is Peace, and He has made peace with you.

You want to understand God’s will and figure out why these things have happened. Here is a truth that may be hard: understanding often follows obedience, not the other way around. The blessed David sat on a royal throne, yet he did not ask to understand every affliction before he wept. He said, “Every night I will wash my bed,” and went mourning. His heart was contrite because he reflected continually on his own sins, not on the sins of others against him. If you would understand God’s will, begin there. Humble your own soul by remembering your own debts, and the injuries done to you will shrink in comparison. You are forgiving a fellow-servant; God forgives a servant, an enemy, one who hated Him. There is no comparison.

Do you see what occurred on the Cross? Christ did not wait until you were worthy. He gave Himself up for you, an offering and a sacrifice. Now the Apostle says, “Be imitators of God, as beloved children.” This is not merely about escaping punishment. This is about sharing in something positive and good. When you forgive, you are not just obeying a command. You are stepping into the very life of God. You are imitating Christ. This alone is enough to recommend the virtue.

Perhaps you think you must feel lowly toward the one who hurt you. True lowliness is not in words only, but in bearing, in tone of voice, and it must be toward all, friend or foe, great or small. This is not weakness. This is boldness of the truest kind, the boldness of a man bearing the Cross. If you speak with anger, you ruin all, no matter how just your words. If you speak with gentleness, your reproof has power. See the first martyr Stephen, his face like an angel, praying for his murderers without wrath. That was not failure; that was victory. The one who seems to prevail by outrage is the one truly defeated, burned up by his own passion. But the one who endures nobly quenches the flame in another, and erects a glorious trophy over anger in both himself and his neighbor.

Do not seek everywhere to win, nor always to shun defeat. There is a defeat that brings great profit. The one who holds his peace when insulted, who bears the blow meekly, this one has conquered. He has removed a disease from his brother, and so far from being consumed, he has quenched a raging fire.

Therefore, do not ask to understand perfectly before you act. Act. Forgive. The events which are past have greater force than those yet to come. What has already been done for you in Christ outweighs every future fear. Let this remembrance settle your turmoil. Do not let the thorns of anger and spite spring up. Let love, the excellent husbandman, sit inwardly in your soul and pull them out by the roots. Walk in love, even as Christ loved you. This is the beginning and the end of the answer you seek.

When hurt and anger pile up, forgiveness can feel like being asked to carry a weight you did not choose. But the call to forgive is not a call to pretend that what happened was acceptable. It is a call to hand the wrong to God and refuse to let it keep ruling your heart. Jesus placed a special emphasis on forgiveness: if you will not forgive others, you close the door to your own experience of forgiveness. That is meant to wake us, but it is also a mercy. You are not left to produce forgiveness on your own. God is the pattern. Because Christ has loved you, you are told to walk in love. Forgiveness begins with receiving what you have already been given in Him.

I am praying that you will be able to forgive more, and I am praying against bitterness, because bitterness promises clarity but only deepens the wound. You do not need every answer before you release the hurt into God's hands.

As for understanding why these things have happened, I want to be honest with you. You may not receive a full explanation in this life. But that is not the same as being left without hope. God watches over his people for good. He continues to build and to plant; he does not finally tear them down. The pain is real, but the present pain cannot be compared with the glory that is coming. There is a day promised when the former things will not be remembered or brought to mind. Until then, hope carries you while you wait.

Understanding God's will usually starts not with a detailed map but with seeking Him. The Scriptures tell us not to be unwise but to understand what the Lord's will is. That means bringing your confusion to Him honestly and asking Him to make your heart willing before He makes every reason clear. He invites you to turn to Him, and He promises to turn to you. If you call on the name of the Lord, you will be saved, not only from guilt but from the final power of everything that has been done to you.

So keep bringing the hurt, the anger, the frustration, and the questions to Jesus. He is not afraid of any of it. His grace is enough to cleanse what needs cleansing, to heal what has been wounded, and to keep you steady when you cannot see why. I will pray that He gives you a heart to know Him in this.
