Disciple of Prayer
I’ve been suicidal for decades but would never do it because I have children and a wife. I’ve raised amazing children who I think could now handle my passing. My wife and I have grown distant after raising two children. I think it’s time to go. I hope god will understand that each day is a struggle. My childhood made it so hard to be an adult. I’m tired. I’m tired.

We have read your request and we are so thankful you reached out to share what you have been carrying for decades. We hear how tired you are, how heavy each day feels, and how the wounds from your childhood have made adulthood so hard. You are not alone in this struggle and you are not forgotten. We are praying for you right now and we want to stay with you in this moment.

We understand you love your wife and your children deeply and that love has kept you here. The thought that your amazing children could now handle your passing and that your wife and you have grown distant does not mean your life is no longer needed. Your children, no matter how grown and capable they are, will always need their father, and your marriage, even in a distant season, is still a sacred covenant before God that can be renewed and healed. The enemy whispers that it is time to go, but that is a lie. Your life is precious to God and to your family, and God still has purpose for you. Jeremiah 29:11 says For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says Yahweh, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future. Psalm 139:13-14 reminds us that you are fearfully and wonderfully made, knit together by God Himself. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 tells us that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit and your life belongs to God, and Deuteronomy 30:19 calls us to choose life.

We hear you say you hope God will understand that each day is a struggle. He does understand, more than anyone. Psalm 34:18 says Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit. Isaiah 41:10 says Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness. Jesus Himself invites you in Matthew 11:28 Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. He does not offer rest through leaving this life, but through coming to Him with your weariness. Lamentations 3:22-23 says It is because of Yahweh’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness. Your tiredness is real, and God wants to carry that tiredness with you and heal the deep childhood pain that still hurts. Romans 8:28 promises that God works all things together for good for those who love Him, and He can bring healing even from the hardest beginnings.

You mentioned god, and we want to gently share that it is only through Jesus Christ that we have access to the Father and find true rest and salvation. John 14:6 says Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. Acts 4:12 says There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. If you have not already, we encourage you to call upon the name of Jesus, to confess with your mouth and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, as Romans 10:9 teaches, and to bring all of your pain, your exhaustion, and your suicidal thoughts to Him. He died and rose again so you could have life, abundant and eternal life, not death.

We want to pray together for you now.

Father in heaven, we lift up this dear husband and father to You in the name of Jesus Christ. You see his decades of silent suffering, his exhaustion, his childhood wounds, and the distance he feels in his marriage. Lord, we ask You to draw near to his broken heart and crushed spirit right now. Wrap him in Your loving kindness, give him Your rest, and let him feel Your presence holding him up. Heal the hurts from his childhood, renew his strength, and show him how deeply he is still needed and loved by his wife and children and by You. Break the lie that it is time to go and speak Your truth that his life has value and future hope. Bring healing to his marriage, restore closeness and communication with his wife, and help him to see that You have not finished writing his story. Give him courage to reach out and not walk through this alone. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.

Please do not stay alone with these thoughts. We urge you to reach out right now to someone you trust, your wife, a pastor, a Christian counselor, a trusted friend or family member, and to seek professional help. If you feel you may act on these thoughts, please call or text a crisis helpline right away, in the United States you can call or text ###, or go to your nearest emergency department. Your life matters so much, and help is available. We also encourage you to speak openly with your wife about how distant you feel, to seek godly counseling together, and to let your church family support you. God wants to redeem this tired season and bring new mercies each morning. We are continuing to pray for you to experience His peace, His healing, and His hope to keep living one day at a time.

We are so thankful you reached out and shared how tired you feel. If you are in immediate danger, please contact your local emergency services right now. For free, confidential support from a helpline in your country, please visit findahelpline.com, you are not alone and trained people are ready to help right now.

We hear how long you have carried this weight, and how much you love your children and your wife. Decades of struggling each day is exhausting, and it makes sense that a difficult childhood would still make adult life feel so hard. It also makes sense that feeling distant in your marriage would add to that tiredness. When you say you think your children could now handle your passing and that it might be time to go, we want you to know your life still matters deeply to your family and to God, even when you feel worn out and hopeless.

Please do not stay alone with these thoughts tonight. Would you reach out right away to one trusted person, your wife, a family member, a pastor, or a counselor, and let them know exactly how you are feeling? Alongside prayer, we also encourage you to connect soon with a doctor or counselor who can walk with you in person and give you ongoing support.

We are praying for you.

Father, in Jesus' name we lift this husband and father to You. You see his exhaustion and the pain he has carried for so many years. Protect him, surround him with caring help today, and give him strength for the next step. Bring comfort to his family and draw them closer together, and guide him to the support and hope he needs. Amen.

Praying for you - and understanding your struggle. Praying that the Lord will intervene and grant you peace and hope, in the name of Jesus.

You have written plainly that you are tired, that each day is a struggle, and that you feel it may be time to go, and I thank you for speaking so honestly about a burden you have carried for decades. To be weary from childhood wounds, to feel distant in your own home, to think your children could now manage without you, this is a very heavy and painful place to stand, and it is right that you have reached out rather than bearing it alone.

Hear this truth with me. To feel that there is no hope in yourself is not the same as there being no hope for you in God. Despair whispers that because you are powerless, you are beyond help, but that word goes beyond the truth of God. He is the God of Hope, and while He lives, the mourner need not despair. As one has said, while I live, I hope, and while I hope, I live. Your life lies in hope, and while you have hope you have life. To lie down in despair is an unwarrantable conclusion, for there is a brightness of a ray of hope this very morning, if God will turn it from a possible hope into an actual hope through believing in Jesus Christ.

Scripture says, He healeth the broken in heart and bindeth up their wounds. You very speedily care for bodily diseases, but this great ill of a broken heart also needs a physician, and Christ is that physician. Calvary is the place for the healing balm. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations, and the least thing about Christ is healing. Not only His fruit but His leaves are full of healing virtue. These healing leaves change the life blood and make the nature other than it was before. There is an abundance of healing power in Jesus Christ and His salvation for those who feel sick unto death, and pardon and healing are found together in Him.

You say you have stayed for your wife and children, and that love which has kept you is itself a testimony that your life has mattered and still matters. Growing distant after years of raising children is a common sorrow, but distance is not the end of the story. Your children, however amazing they have become, still need their father, not only in childhood but in all the years to come. Your wife, though there is distance now, is still your wife, and the Lord who joined you is able to bring healing where there has been weariness. Do not let the thought that they could handle your passing settle as truth. Love does not measure its usefulness by feeling needed for a season. Your presence, your voice, your continued living is itself a gift to them that nothing else can replace.

God does understand that each day has been a struggle, and He does not turn away from that knowledge. He invites those who are humbled and weary to put their mouth in the dust, if so be there may be hope, for high thoughts of God beget hope in the soul, and hope leads to confidence. In the dust of self abasement is the place for hope, not for ending hope. He grants pardon when men are humbled, and when the Sun of Righteousness rises upon them with healing in His wings, they have no need to say they are sick, for forgiveness and healing come from the same hand.

I plead with you not to make a permanent decision upon a feeling of tiredness, however long it has lasted. Sit not down in despair. Hope on, hope ever. Take up arms against a sea of troubles, for there is One who careth for you. Recovery is often slow, and as you grow a little stronger and a little stronger, acknowledge in each increase of strength that the Lord has a new claim upon your affection.

Please do not remain alone with these thoughts tonight. Turn at once to another living person. Speak openly to your wife, to a trusted family member, to your pastor or minister, and to your doctor or counselor. If you feel you may act upon these thoughts, please go to a safe place with another person and seek help immediately through your local emergency services or a suicide prevention helpline. In the United States you may call or text 988, in the United Kingdom you may call Samaritans on 116 123, in Canada you may call 1 833 456 4566, and in many other countries you may find help at Find A Helpline | Free emotional support in 130+ countries. If you are outside these places, please contact a local helpline, hospital, or someone you trust to stay with you.

You have been willing to carry this for others for many years. Now let others carry it with you. Let your wife know of your tiredness. Let a minister or counselor hear the story of your childhood and your present weariness. Let Christ be your hope, for He is able to heal, and He is near to those who call upon Him. The Lord has not brought you this far to leave you without hope. Look to Him, speak to Him even in few words, Lord, save me, heal me, forgive me, keep me, and ask Him to show you the next step for this day only.

I pray that the Lord will give you grace to live through this night and into tomorrow, that He will set healing leaves upon your wounds, that He will restore hope where despair has spoken, and that He will use your continued life to bless your wife and children and to strengthen others who walk a similar path. Please reach out again soon and let someone near you know how you are, so you are not left to struggle alone.
