True Laborers for Areas Impacted by Earthquakes, Wars: Edification of Church, Widows, Orphans, Matt 16:18, 1 Cor 14:1-3, 1 Tim 1:5, Matt 9:36-38...

We have heard your prayer and we join you in it with compassion for the multitudes who are troubled and scattered as sheep having no shepherd. The harvest truly is plenteous, but the laborers are few, and so we pray together to the Lord of the harvest that He would send forth laborers into His harvest.

We ask the Lord to send faithful laborers into areas deeply impacted by earthquakes and wars, into Ukraine, Iran, Venezuela, Colombia, the Philippines, and every place where the need is great. We pray that He would raise up men and women of steadfast faith like those you named, Hudson Taylor, George Mueller, William and Catherine Booth, Adoniram and Ann and Sarah and Emily Judson, to found missions and orphanages and schools that teach true doctrine. As it was with the twelve, though they were few, God made them many not by adding to their number but by giving them power, and we ask Him to give such power again now.

We pray for the edification of the Church, for widows and orphans, remembering that pure religion before God is to visit orphans and widows in their affliction and to keep oneself unstained. We pray that the store of the Church would be used with alms pure from covetousness and in great abundance, and that in every place there would be teachers and servants of the Word, that no estate and no community would be left destitute of a church where prayers and hymns and the offering of the Lord's Day are continually made, and where the winepress and the fruits of labor are blessed because God has first been honored. We ask that He will not leave His people as orphans, but will come to them by His Spirit and His presence.

We pray that the goal of all teaching would be love from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith, and that young and old alike would be guarded from deception, from fear and lies, from wrongdoing, from evil people and impostors, from those who profess to know God but deny Him by their deeds and who have a form of godliness but deny its power. Grant that true believers would turn away from such ways and give diligence to study and to handle accurately the word of truth. Keep them from the father of lies, the ancient serpent and accuser, and wash them and sanctify them by the Word of Christ, which alone is the antidote to his unholy flood.

We ask that the gates of hell would not prevail against the Church which Christ builds, there or anywhere else in the world, and that the Church would make herself ready as a bride adorned by the righteous acts of those whom Jesus has made holy. Do not take your people out of the world, but keep them from the evil one, from unbelieving and evil people, and from the source of all murder and falsehood. Let the Gospel go forth purely and boldly through them, let it run and be received, and let those who hear it be kept by your power.

We thank you, Father, that you hear this prayer, and we ask all these things in the name of Jesus Christ, our only Savior, who alone is the way of salvation.

Your prayer reflects a heart that is burdened as Jesus was when He saw the crowds as sheep without a shepherd. He said the harvest truly is great but the laborers are few, and He told His disciples to pray that the Lord of the harvest would send forth laborers into His harvest. That is still the need today, and it is right to ask God to raise up faithful men and women to go into places that have been torn by war, earthquake and great hardship, to plant churches, to care for orphans and to teach the Word in truth.

Scripture shows that the church Jesus builds will not be overcome, even though the gates of hell oppose it. He builds it, and He sustains it. At the same time the New Testament warns that the church in this age will not be perfect. Wheat and weeds grow together until the harvest, and leaven can work through the whole lump. That is why sound doctrine matters so much. The goal of instruction is love from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith, and those who teach must hold fast to the Word and watch their life and doctrine closely.

You prayed for widows and orphans, and James reminds us that pure religion before God includes visiting orphans and widows in their affliction and keeping oneself unstained from the world. The apostle Paul gives clear guidance about widows. If a widow has children or grandchildren, the family has the first responsibility to care for her. The church is to relieve those who are truly widows, those who are desolate and without family support, who are trusting in God and continuing in prayer night and day. In the early church such women were given a real ministry of intercessory prayer, and in return the church took responsibility for their needs. This protects both the family and the church from burden and from idleness, and it keeps the care of the needy centered on prayer and godliness rather than mere support.

You also asked for protection from deception, and that is a vital prayer in these last days. Jesus warned to take heed that no one deceive you, and Paul warned that evil people and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived, having a form of godliness but denying its power, professing to know God but denying Him by their deeds. The only safeguard is to be diligent to present oneself approved to God, rightly handling the word of truth, being washed by the water of the Word, sanctified by truth, and overcoming the accuser, who is the father of lies and the ancient serpent, by the blood of the Lamb and the word of testimony, with a hope so fixed on eternal life and the resurrection that this present life is not made into an idol.

We join you in praying that God would send forth true laborers, that He would establish and strengthen local churches in the faith so they increase and are built up, that He would raise up homes and schools that teach true doctrine with love as the goal, that He would guard young and old from fear, lies and wrongdoing, and that He would keep His people from evil while leaving them in the world to proclaim the gospel boldly and purely. May the Lord cause His Word to run and be glorified, and may His people be kept, cleansed and made ready by the righteous acts that flow from being made holy in Christ, until He comes.
