Let us pray that God blesses and protects me on the way to going out, and on the way back, in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ! Let us pray that God will protect my travel (going and returning) from all accidents and problems, in the Name of Jesus Christ. Let us pray that God will give me wisdom, grace and blessing at my meeting with my business partner. Let us pray that God will put kindness in the heart of my business partner. Let us pray that Heavenly Father will give me wisdom and guidance, which products and in what quantities to buy. Let us pray that God will give me good success and show mercy to the business He has given me for my livelihood, in the Name of Jesus Christ! Let us pray that God will give me wisdom, grace and blessing in my travel so that I may do all the will of God. Let us pray for all this in the Name of Jesus Christ. Traveling mercies are not a trifle to be passed over in a hurried prayer, but a matter for which the throne of grace should be besieged with earnest pleas. He who covers His children with His feathers shall spread those wings over you as you go out and as you return. The calamities that befall the unguarded, the accidents that snatch away the presumptuous, these are not beneath the notice of Him who numbers the hairs of your head. Can you venture upon a single mile without first seeking that Divine protection which alone can make the road safe? You cannot, and blessed be His name, you shall not, for the shield of omnipotence is lifted over the head of the upright. The Lord knows the path you take tomorrow; not a grain of dust stirs upon that highway without His superintendence. Therefore commit your way unto Him, trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass.
But why stop at the mere safety of your frame? The business itself, seeing it is the very work God has given to your hands, must be bathed in prayer, lest you lean unto your own understanding. Wisdom for your dealings, grace for your conference, favor in the eyes of your partner, these are the gifts that come down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness. The heart of that man is in the Lord’s hand; He turns it whithersoever He will. So entreat the Sovereign Disposer of all events to put kindness there, to overrule judgment, to bestow that sweet savor of Christ’s merits which makes even our imperfect labors acceptable. And when you stand amid the goods and the ledgers, deciding what to purchase and in what measure, do not trust the sharpest natural wit. The mercy which is merely common to all men is of small comfort; appropriate to yourself that peculiar favor which is the portion of the elect, purchased by the Redeemer’s blood, and applied by the Spirit to your own soul. What a joy to see a soul undertaking a journey not for idle spectacle but for the work God has given! Yet let us consider the Magi, those wise barbarians who traveled from afar not for trade or earthly gain, but solely to worship Christ. They required no soft bed, no retinue of servants, no certainty of success in worldly terms. They followed a star and endured hardship because their treasure was not in the transaction but in the One they sought. They rejoiced not when their camels were laden with profit, but when the star stood over the Child. Do you travel with that same single-hearted devotion? If you seek first the kingdom, all else shall be added unto you.
Pray then for protection, yes, for God is Lord of every mile. But pray more fervently that this journey become a pilgrimage of the soul. For what does it profit if you secure a favorable deal and yet on the way your heart is carried off by anxiety, by love of gain, by the worry that consumes the faithless? The narrow way demands a sober wakefulness; the precipices on either side are steep. Many have stumbled because they made their business a god and their success a proof of divine favor, forgetting that the rain falls on the just and the unjust.
As for wisdom at your meeting, I remind you that the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason. The world mistakes clever speech and sharp bargaining for wisdom, but the apostle Paul did not come with fine words that the cross might not be emptied of power. He came in weakness and fear and much trembling, yet his work endured. Let your conduct be in power, not in persuasive words of earthly cunning. Entreat the Lord not merely for a soft heart in your partner, but that your own heart be emptied of covetousness. For a bosom of gold, firmer than adamant, is the fortitude that only charity can forge. Without it, no business is blessed; with it, even a little becomes a feast.
I will not refuse to pray for your safety and for the success of honest labor. The magistrate who attends to public order is God’s minister, and honest trade that supplies our needs is not without honor. Yet know that the true success is to do the will of God. That is the mercy that endures when ledgers are forgotten. Let your journey be undertaken with few wants, like those who can live on bread and water from the wells, and your soul will outshine the merchant who arrives with a train of mules and yet carries the heavier burden of greed.
Rise then, and go. But go as one who travels toward the heavenly city, using the business of this world as though not engrossed in it. The time is short. May your going out and your coming in be under the shadow of the Almighty, not so that you may boast of a prosperous venture, but that you may return with a humbler heart and a keener hunger for the bread that does not perish.
