Beloved of All
Your prayer beautifully captures the heart of God as He reveals Himself in Scripture. He is a God of perfect justice who must deal with sin, and He is also a God whose compassion triumphs and who turns pathways of judgment into avenues of life.
The verse you shared shows this so clearly. David had sinned in pride by numbering the people, putting trust in human strength rather than in the Lord. Judgment was deserved and the angel was sent, yet as the destruction began the Lord said, Enough, withdraw your hand. In that moment at the threshing floor, a place that was a picture of judgment and separation became a place where mercy was revealed and where an altar would be built. It reminds us that God is sovereign over all things and His word alone can both send and stay judgment. His justice is real, but His mercy moves Him to relent when His people turn to Him in humble repentance.
This is the same mercy God declared to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. He spoke those words when Israel had rebelled and worshiped the golden calf after receiving the law. By every standard of righteousness they should have been wiped out, yet God was looking for a reason to show mercy and He moved Moses to intercede. That is the sovereignty of His mercy. Mercy is not a right we can claim. It is not getting what we do deserve. Grace goes even further and is getting what we do not deserve, the unmerited favor and blessing of God.
We have no ground to come to God and demand justice, for justice would leave us without hope. We come as David did and cry, have mercy upon me, O God, according to Your tender mercies. Scripture tells us that God is full of compassion and gracious, longsuffering and plenteous in mercy and truth. He is rich in mercy, and not by works of righteousness which we have done but according to His mercy He saved us. By grace we are saved through faith, and that not of ourselves. We are justified by His grace, which means the charges against us are not only forgiven but erased, and we are made heirs of the hope of eternal life.
It is only through Jesus Christ that this mercy reaches us. He is the one who stood in the gap and bore the judgment we deserved. God did not send His Son to condemn the world but to save the world through Him. While we were still sinners Christ died for us, so that the ultimate destruction sin brings would fall on Him and life would be offered to us.
Because of this, God calls those who trust in Christ vessels of mercy, prepared beforehand for glory that He might make known the riches of His glory upon them. He desires to transform us so that we do not simply speak about His mercy but reflect it. As we have received such great compassion, we are to become vessels of honor, useful to the Master, showing His grace and compassion to a needy world.
May the Lord answer your prayer and make you such a vessel. May you walk in His truth, boast only in His grace that has chosen and cleansed you, and may your life display to others the God who judges righteously and yet delights to show mercy. When you call to Him in repentance and faith in Jesus alone, He hears and He withholds what is deserved and pours out what could never be earned.
