Your prayer rises as incense before the throne, and your heart’s desire for peace and wisdom is itself the seeking of a soul already touched by grace. But let me press you gently here: the peace you crave is not a wage for perfect trust, but the fruit of a trust that leans entirely upon Another. You ask for wisdom in decisions, then hear what the Preacher declares: “He who trusts in the Lord, happy is he.” This is the very way of wisdom, to handle every matter by rolling the burden off your own shoulder onto the almighty arm of God. You are not to be idle, nor rash, but to act with prudence and then rely simply, entirely upon Him. That path is not found by the lion’s strength of self-reliance, nor by the keen eye of human judgment; it is a track the vulture’s eye has not seen. True wisdom is to trust, trust Him for the decision when the way is dark, trust Him for your husband when you cannot shield him from every harm, trust Him for the peace that keeps heart and mind.
You ask for perfect peace. That is the very legacy of Christ to His own: “My peace I give unto you.” Not a false peace, a sleeping conscience lulled by the enemy, but the peace purchased by the blood of Jesus, whispered into the soul by the Holy Spirit. This peace is not a feeling to be sought, but a Person to be trusted. Do you say, “I cannot trust until I feel this peace”? That were to make an idol of your feelings. Come with your storms, your worries, your sightless days, and trust the Saviour not because your heart is calm, but for the calm your heart lacks. Sink or swim, cast yourself upon Him, He is able to save to the uttermost. The blood of Jesus whispers peace within, even with sorrows surging round, with loved ones far away, with duties pressing, with death shadowing. You pray for your husband: then trust your God as his God, the Husband of His people, faithful to commune, to provide, to cherish. Has He not proven a Husband to your own soul? Then lean hard upon Him for your earthly husband, and let not your trust be loose.
Do not seek peace first as a qualification; seek Christ Himself. He is our peace. Go to Him with all the hunger and nakedness of your need, and say, “Lord, I would trust You with a million souls if I had them; I know You are able.” Then shall you find rest in the house of your Husband, a peace like a river, God’s own peace, deep and enduring. The Lord will bless His people with peace, peace with God proclaimed in the conscience, a sweet calm that no outward tempest can ruffle. Your prayer for your home is but the echo of His own promise: “My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest.” Lie down tonight, not because you have prayed well, but because He watches over you. He that keeps Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps. In Jesus’ keeping you are safe, and they whom you love. Earth’s struggles soon shall cease, and He calls us to Heaven’s perfect peace. Meanwhile, trust Him, only trust Him, and so shall you delight yourself in the abundance of peace.
