Greed
Take care! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; for one's life does not consist in the abundance of possessions. (Luke 12:15)
One of the most serious spiritual problem in the country today is reckless and untrammeled greed. Greed caused the disgraceful corporate scandals that fill our newspapers. Greed is responsible for crooked cops and crooked politicians. Greed causes the constant efforts to destroy unions that protect basic worker rights.
Bottom line people become obsessive! Whether it’s in a relationship, work, sports or simply in the every day activities. No matter how much they have, it’s never quite enough. If they had a million dollars in the bank and wanted for nothing, they would want 2 million in the bank. We always crave for more… bigger house, more money, closet full of clothes, the fastest car; it’s a never ending desire.
The online dictionary defines greed as: Excessively desirous of acquiring or possessing, especially wishing to possess more than what one needs or deserves. And Luke 12:15 warns us to be on guard against all kinds of greed. Hence greed is an addiction and as with any addiction, you have to detach yourself from temptation.
When tempted, ask yourself will this satisfy me, is this something I need or is it something I just want? Will I want more? If the answer is yes, then you’ve become a slave to your possessions and you need to re-think your priorities and pray for the strength to overcome your problem.
Give up your greedy nature today and share something with someone you love!
