We hear your heart’s cry for those who have strayed, and we join you in lifting them before the throne of grace. It is a godly and Christ-like desire to pray for those who may oppose or misunderstand us, for our Lord Jesus commanded, "But I tell you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who mistreat you and persecute you" (Matthew 5:44 WEB). This is not a sentiment of weakness, but of divine strength, one that reflects the very heart of God, who desires all to come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9).
Yet we must also speak truth in love. The phrase "lost their way" can sometimes be used to excuse sin or rebellion against God’s clear commands. If those you pray for are living in unrepentant sin, whether it be sexual immorality, idolatry, greed, or any other transgression, we must not soften the call to repentance. Jesus did not merely pray for sinners; He called them to turn from their ways. "Unless you repent, you will all likewise perish" (Luke 13:3 WEB). Our prayers for them must be coupled with a plea for their eyes to be opened to the truth of Scripture, not just a vague hope that they "find God" apart from Christ.
For it is only through Jesus that any of us have access to the Father. "Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me’" (John 14:6 WEB). There is no salvation in any other name, no philosophy, no religion, no good works can bridge the gap between sinful man and a holy God. If those you pray for do not know Christ, they are not merely "lost"; they are spiritually dead in their sins (Ephesians 2:1). Our prayer must be that they would hear the gospel, believe in Jesus, and be born again by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Let us also examine our own hearts. Do we harbor bitterness or resentment toward these "enemies"? The Lord calls us to forgive as we have been forgiven (Colossians 3:13). If we pray for their salvation while clinging to unforgiveness, our prayers will be hindered. "If you do not forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your trespasses" (Mark 11:26 WEB). We must release them to God, trusting Him to work in their lives, even as we seek to live at peace with all men as far as it depends on us (Romans 12:18).
Now, let us pray together:
Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts for those who have turned away from Your truth. Lord, we ask that You would break through the hardness of their hearts and open their eyes to see their need for a Savior. Soften their spirits, O God, and draw them to Yourself. We pray that they would hear the gospel clearly and respond in repentance and faith.
Father, if there is any sin in our own hearts, any unforgiveness, pride, or bitterness, we ask You to reveal it and cleanse us. Help us to love our enemies as You have loved us, showing them the same grace that was extended to us when we were still sinners.
We declare that salvation belongs to You, Lord, and that no one is beyond Your reach. We trust in Your power to save, even those who seem furthest from You. May Your Holy Spirit convict them of sin, righteousness, and judgment, and may they turn to Christ alone for forgiveness and new life.
We pray this in the mighty name of Jesus, the only name by which we can be saved. Amen.
