To stop sinning

Swoosil

Disciple of Prayer
I keep on falling to the same sin, I keep on doing for ### years, it is lust. Lately, I cried to God all night because, I am repenting, because I am just reminded again of how God is so good into my life, that is why, I repented. But today, I fall into the same sin again, making me feel that the words I talk to God the entire night and the past moments I did feels nothing.

We hear the deep struggle in your heart, and we want you to know that your honesty before God is not in vain. The battle against sin—especially one that has taken root over many years—is not easily won, but it is not impossible through Christ. Your tears and repentance are seen by the Lord, and His mercy is greater than your weakness. The fact that you are grieved by this sin and long to be free is evidence of the Holy Spirit at work in you.

First, we must address the nature of lust with clarity. The Bible is unmistakable in its condemnation of sexual sin, for it defiles the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:18-20) and wages war against the soul (1 Peter 2:11). Lust is not merely a struggle—it is a spiritual attack that seeks to enslave you, to rob you of the joy and purity God intends for His children. Jesus Himself warned that even looking at someone with lust is adultery in the heart (Matthew 5:28). This is not to shame you further, but to remind you of the seriousness of this battle and the holiness of God, who calls you to walk in purity.

Your feelings of despair after falling again are understandable, but we must not let them deceive us into believing that God’s grace is powerless or that your repentance was meaningless. The enemy would love for you to abandon hope, to believe that you are beyond God’s reach. But Scripture declares, *"If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness"* (1 John 1:9). Your repentance is not empty—it is the very means by which God begins to break the chains of sin in your life. However, repentance must be more than sorrow; it must lead to a turning away from the sin and a turning toward God’s strength.

We must also address the reality that this sin has persisted for many years. This is not merely a habit—it is a stronghold, and strongholds are not torn down by human effort alone. You cannot defeat this in your own strength, no matter how many nights you spend in prayer. The apostle Paul cried out, *"For the good which I desire, I don’t do; but the evil which I don’t desire, this I practice"* (Romans 7:19). His struggle mirrors yours, and his solution is the same: *"Who will deliver me out of the body of this death? I thank God through Jesus Christ, our Lord!"* (Romans 7:24-25). Victory comes not by your willpower, but by the power of the Holy Spirit working in you.

Here are steps we must take together in this battle:

1. **Radical Accountability**: You cannot fight this alone. James 5:16 commands us to confess our sins to one another so that we may be healed. Seek out a godly, mature believer—preferably a man if you are a man—who can walk with you, pray with you, and hold you accountable. This is not a sign of weakness; it is wisdom. The enemy thrives in secrecy, but light exposes darkness.

2. **Flee and Replace**: Scripture does not merely say "resist" sin—it says *"Flee sexual immorality!"* (1 Corinthians 6:18). You must take drastic measures to remove the temptations that lead you into this sin. This may mean installing filters on your devices, avoiding certain places or media, or even changing routines that leave you vulnerable. But fleeing is not enough—you must also replace the sin with something holy. Fill your mind with Scripture, memorize verses that combat lust (such as Job 31:1 or Psalm 51:10), and replace idle time with prayer, worship, or service to others.

3. **Renew Your Mind**: Lust is a battle of the mind, and the mind must be renewed by the Word of God. Romans 12:2 says, *"Don’t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind."* You must saturate your thoughts with truth, not the lies of the enemy. When temptation comes, combat it with Scripture, not with your own reasoning. Jesus Himself used Scripture to resist the devil in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11). You must do the same.

4. **Walk in the Spirit**: Galatians 5:16 declares, *"Walk in the Spirit, and you won’t fulfill the lust of the flesh."* This is not a one-time decision but a daily, moment-by-moment surrender to the Holy Spirit. Begin each day by yielding to Him, asking Him to fill you and empower you to walk in purity. When temptation comes, cry out to Him for strength. He is faithful to provide a way of escape (1 Corinthians 10:13).

5. **Embrace God’s Forgiveness**: Your feelings of condemnation are not from God. Romans 8:1 says, *"There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus."* The enemy would love for you to wallow in guilt, but God calls you to receive His forgiveness and move forward. Every time you fall, get back up, repent, and press on. Do not let past failures define your future.

6. **Pursue Holiness, Not Just Avoidance**: It is not enough to simply avoid sin—you must pursue righteousness. 1 Timothy 6:11 says, *"Flee these things, and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, and gentleness."* Fill your life with godly pursuits: serving in your church, studying the Word, praying for others, and cultivating relationships that honor God. The more you focus on Christ, the less room there will be for sin.

We must also address the fact that your prayer did not mention the name of Jesus. This is not a trivial detail—it is essential. There is no access to God apart from Jesus Christ. John 14:6 declares, *"Jesus said to him, 'I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me.'" Salvation is found in no other name (Acts 4:12). If you have not placed your faith in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, we urge you to do so now. Confess your sins, believe in His death and resurrection for your forgiveness, and surrender your life to Him. Without this foundation, the battle against sin will always be in your own strength, and you will continue to fail.

But if you are in Christ, then His power is at work in you, and victory is possible. Philippians 1:6 assures us, *"He who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ."* God is not finished with you. Your struggle does not define you—Christ does.

Let us pray together now:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, but also with hope, for we know that You are faithful. Lord, we lift up our brother who is battling the sin of lust, a struggle that has persisted for years. We ask that You would break the chains of this sin in his life. Father, we know that this is not a battle he can win on his own, so we ask for the power of Your Holy Spirit to fill him, to strengthen him, and to give him the victory that only You can provide.

Lord, we confess that lust is a grievous sin, one that dishonors You and defiles the temple of the Holy Spirit. We repent on his behalf, and we ask for Your forgiveness. Wash him clean by the blood of Jesus, and create in him a clean heart, O God. Renew a right spirit within him (Psalm 51:10).

Father, we ask that You would surround him with godly accountability. Bring men into his life who will walk with him, pray with him, and hold him to the standard of Your Word. Give him the courage to be transparent and the humility to receive correction.

Lord, we pray that You would help him to flee temptation and to replace sinful habits with righteous ones. Renew his mind with Your Word, and let the truth of Scripture be his defense against the lies of the enemy. When he is weak, remind him that Your grace is sufficient, and Your power is made perfect in weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9).

Father, we also pray that You would fill him with a deep love for You, a love that surpasses the fleeting pleasures of sin. Let him see You as You truly are—holy, good, and worthy of all devotion. May his heart be so captivated by You that sin loses its appeal.

Lord, we rebuke the spirit of condemnation that seeks to keep him in bondage. Remind him that there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1). Let him walk in the freedom that You have purchased for him.

Finally, Father, we ask that You would complete the work You have begun in him. Strengthen his faith, deepen his repentance, and lead him into a life of holiness that brings glory to Your name. We ask all of this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.

Do not lose heart, brother. The same God who delivered Paul from his thorn, who rescued David from adultery, and who saved Peter from denial is able to set you free. Keep fighting. Keep repenting. Keep pressing into Christ. The battle is fierce, but the victory is sure.

Dear friend, we're here with you, standing in the gap and lifting you up in prayer. We understand the struggle, the cycle of falling and repenting, and the despair that follows each fall. But remember, God is faithful, and His grace is more than enough for you.

We want to encourage you with these words from the apostle Paul in Philippians 4:13, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." It's not about your strength, but Christ's strength working in you. You're not alone in this fight; He's right there with you, empowering you to overcome.

Let's also remind ourselves of 1 John 1:9, "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." Every time you fall, get back up, confess, and receive His forgiveness. Don't let past failures define your future.

We're praying for you, brother. We're asking God to fill you with His Holy Spirit, to give you the strength to resist temptation, and to help you flee from sin. We're also praying for God to bring godly men into your life for accountability and support.

Keep fighting, keep trusting, and keep pressing into Christ. The victory is sure, and we're believing with you for freedom and holiness in your life. You are loved, and you are not alone.

In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
