To be with a friend who is in need

We hear your heart for your friend, and we lift her up before the Lord with deep compassion. The pain of walking through multiple hardships can feel overwhelming, and it’s clear you care deeply for her well-being. We stand with you in prayer, asking God to move mightily in her life.

First, we must address the foundation of our faith and prayer. It is only through the name of Jesus Christ that we have access to the Father (John 14:6). There is no other name under heaven by which we can be saved (Acts 4:12). If your friend does not yet know Jesus as her Lord and Savior, we pray that the Holy Spirit would draw her to Him, that she would repent of her sins, believe in His death and resurrection, and receive the gift of eternal life (Romans 10:9-10). Salvation is the first and greatest need of every soul, and we pray she would come to know the hope and healing that only Christ can provide.

For your friend’s current struggles, we rebuke the spirit of despair and heaviness in Jesus’ name. The enemy seeks to steal, kill, and destroy, but Jesus came that she might have life and have it abundantly (John 10:10). We declare that God is her refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble (Psalm 46:1). Even when she feels broken, He is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit (Psalm 34:18).

We pray for tangible provision if she is facing financial or material need. God promises to supply all our needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19). If she is battling physical or mental health challenges, we ask for the Great Physician to bring healing and peace. Jesus bore our infirmities and carried our diseases (Isaiah 53:4-5), and we trust Him to restore her strength.

If your friend is entangled in sin, whether it be bitterness, addiction, sexual immorality, or any other bondage, we pray for conviction and deliverance. The Lord is faithful to forgive when we confess our sins (1 John 1:9), and He gives us power through His Spirit to walk in freedom (Galatians 5:1). We rebuke any lies she has believed about her worth or identity, for she is fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14), and in Christ, she is a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17).

We also pray for wisdom and discernment for you as you support her. Proverbs 17:17 says, “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.” May you be a vessel of God’s love and truth, pointing her to Him even when it’s difficult. Guard your own heart as well, so that you are not drained or led astray by the weight of her struggles (Proverbs 4:23).

Father God, we come before You on behalf of this precious daughter of Yours. We ask that You would break every chain, heal every wound, and restore every area of her life that has been touched by pain. Surround her with Your presence, Lord, and let her feel Your love in a tangible way. Provide for her needs, both seen and unseen, and lead her into the plans You have for her, plans for hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11). Strengthen her faith, renew her mind, and fill her with Your peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7). We ask all these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.

If your friend is open to it, encourage her to seek godly counsel, whether through a pastor, a biblical counselor, or a trusted Christian community. Isolation can make struggles feel heavier, but iron sharpens iron, and we are meant to bear one another’s burdens (Galatians 6:2). Remind her that God’s grace is sufficient for her, and His power is made perfect in weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). She is not alone, and we will continue to stand in the gap for her.

Walking through this with your friend is heavy, and we can feel how much you want to be a safe place for her. When someone has endured so much, it's easy to worry that we aren't enough. But the truth is, what she needs most isn't a perfect helper, it's a steady, ordinary friend who simply keeps showing up. We can offer only ourselves, and that ordinary presence is more healing than we realize.

As you pour into her, please don't forget your own heart. Carrying another person's pain can quietly wear you down. Pay attention when you're running on empty, and get the rest and support you need. Sometimes the most loving thing you can do is gently encourage her to connect with a professional counselor or a support group, skilled care that goes beyond what friendship alone can provide. That's not stepping back; it's widening the circle of help for her.

Let her set the pace. Some days she may need to talk; other days, just sitting together over coffee or running an errand can be a quiet gift. When you pray for her, and when you pray with her, if she's open, you're inviting the Wonderful Counselor to do what you could never do on your own.

Lord Jesus, You see every hidden wound this woman carries. We ask You to guard her, comfort her, and gently mend what's been broken. Give her courage to hope again. And strengthen her friend in all the quiet, faithful ways love shows up. Keep her from weariness, and fill her with Your patient, enduring care. Amen.

When the heart is bowed down under repeated afflictions, and you desire to stand beside a friend in deep need, you do well to bring the case to God. The sword of prayer has such an edge that it will cut through coats of mail. Your friend has passed through many waters, and you feel the weight of her sorrow, yet I urge you, approach the throne in humility, for that is the fit attitude of prayer. Go not with self-conceit, thinking you must frame elegant petitions; the Lord hears the breathing of a soul that casts itself wholly upon mercy.

Let not the feebleness of your words discourage you. The power of prayer is not to be measured by its outward expression. A breathing is a prayer from which God does not hide His ear. When you groan with her in intercession, when you can barely utter more than her name before the mercy seat, that sigh carries a voice in the ear of our Heavenly Father. He quickens us through His Word, and thus He comforts. Pray for her, and as you pray, remind her that “this is my comfort in my affliction, for Your word has quickened me.” Lead her to the promises, for they are the peculiar source of comfort.

Yet comfort alone is not enough; pray also for constancy. He that derives real support and comfort from his religion is the man who will not backslide from it. Entreat the Lord to establish her heart in every good word and work, that she may not only be consoled but made steadfast. And remember the future that awaits all who trust in Christ: “You shall forget your misery, and remember it as waters that pass away.” The breaking clouds shall vanish; the deep night shall yield to endless day. Keep that hope before your own eyes as you minister to her.

If you ask how to bear such burdens, the answer lies in more prayer. It was little prayer that brought you down; it is much prayer that will lift you up. Use all the arguments you can muster, spread her case before the Lord, plead His covenant faithfulness, remind Him of His declared love for the broken heart. And be not fearful, O you of little faith; Christ knows all things, and He knows your friend’s need perfectly. He who calms the storm is in the vessel with her. Comfort one another with these words, and look to Him who is the very essence of your consolation.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
Matthew 6:33: But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

It is the mark of a true friend to run to the aid of one in distress, and you do well to seek both to be present with her and to lift her up in prayer. For a genuine friend is more to be longed for than the light itself; many who see the sun are in darkness, but those who have such a friend are never alone in tribulation. When you stand on the very spots where you have wept together, you leave a grace of your own there, and your love is a strong comfort.

But do not suppose that prayer is a small thing. Prayer is the great weapon, the impregnable wall. Yet Christ taught us not to think we shall be heard for our many words; rather, let your prayer be continual and importunate, like the widow before the judge. Rise early, pray through the night watches, and bring her need before God with simple, trusting words. I have seen how the prayers of a righteous friend avail much; Cornelius obtained a hearing by his prayers and alms. And remember that we need both our own effort and God's grace. Be at her side, bear her burdens, and let your deeds make your prayer alive.

And if the storm rages, and waves of despair threaten to sink the boat, do not lose heart. Laugh at human trials when you have God favorable. If He is our friend, though all men war against us, there is no harm. Do not ask for a sign or a swift end to every trouble; sometimes He allows the trial to prolong so that her faith may be strengthened and she may cling to Him alone. Pray that His will be done, and that through this valley she may find Him nearer than ever. For our Lord Himself, when He stood at the tomb of Lazarus, gave thanks to the Father not out of need, but to show that His will and the Father's are one, and to draw the people to faith. So too, your prayer should aim not only at relief, but that all may see God's hand and glorify Him.

Continue, then, in your holy friendship. Do not grow weary in intercession, even if the answer delays. For I have known a man who called upon holy men to pray first for his friend, then for himself, so precious was that friend to him. You are such a friend, and this is a time to prove it. Let your own soul be first given to God in prayer, and then you will have strength to bear her up. And if she is too weak to pray, carry her on the wings of your own supplication. God is not deaf to such love; He who defended the city for David's sake will not neglect the cry of His children.

Your heart for your friend is a gift. When someone we love is hurting after so much, the best thing we can do is carry them to the only One whose presence brings healing and fullness of joy. Prayer is not about informing God of a situation He doesn’t already see, He knows every detail, but about standing in His presence and aligning ourselves with what He is already wanting to do.

Think of the persistent friend in Scripture who knocked at midnight asking for bread to set before someone in need. The neighbor didn’t answer because of friendship, but because of shameless, continued knocking. That kind of importunity is what often marks prayer that moves the heart of God. It’s not about the length of the prayer or perfect words; it’s about refusing to stop bringing that need before the Father. The effectual, fervent prayer of a righteous person accomplishes much.

So as you pray for your friend, don’t hold back. Be bold, be persistent. Let your prayers rise out of that very desperation and deep concern you already feel. At the same time, remember that prayer is not a tool to force my will on heaven. The highest aim is to see God’s purposes accomplished. Begin by acknowledging that He is the Father to those who trust in Christ, and if your friend has not yet entered that relationship, the most vital prayer is that she would cry out in her brokenness, “God, be merciful to me, a sinner.” That single prayer opens the door to everything else.

Pray for her practical needs, yes, for the help she must have. But do not neglect to ask that she would become more conscious of His presence, because whether she knows it or not, there is nowhere she can flee from it. His nearness may feel like a consuming fire against sin, but for the one who turns to Him, it is safety, comfort, and the place where true joy is found. Let your prayers be a mixture of worship for who He is and supplication for your friend, trusting that He hears the cry of His people. He assured Solomon long ago that His eyes and ears are open to the prayer made in humility. He has not changed.

Keep knocking. Gather others to agree with you in prayer wherever you can, because Jesus promised that when two or three agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done. Your faithful friendship, bringing her to the throne of grace again and again, may be the very means God uses to lift her head. Do not grow weary. The Father delights to answer when His children pray.
