Weariness of body and soul speaks plainly through your words, and you do well to bring this longing before the throne of grace. Yet I would have you see that the deepest rest is not found in any place, however fair its waves or grand its mountains. “I will give you rest,” saith the Saviour, rest now, rest perfect, rest in Him. Have you truly come unto Him? Then the rest He gives is yours already, an abiding portion that no weariness of limb can steal away. It is rest on the wing, rest in motion, not the sluggishness of the idle, but the sweet repose of a soul whose burden has been rolled upon the Lord.
You miss the sea. It is a natural and proper longing, for “the sea is His, and He made it,” and He made you with eyes to see its splendour and a heart to delight in its vastness. I have no quarrel with the desire to stand where the waves roar and the spray lifts the soul to adoration. God meant us to go to sea, how else shall we have dominion over the works of His hands? And the mountains, too, speak of His strength and our weakness, calling us to look to Him who cometh over the steepest crags of difficulty like a young hart. He can part the dividing hills and make a path for your feet to the places of refreshment.
But here is the test: can you rest in Him even if no journey comes? The sea and the mountains are but signs, whispers of the glorious rest that remaineth for the people of God. “Rest in the Lord,” and let Him be your fixed anchor amid the restless tides of life. Trust His wisdom, for you cannot see your way, but He can. If He grants you the holiday you crave, receive it as a token of His kindness; if He withholds it, know that He Himself is your exceeding great reward, and His presence makes a paradise of the dreariest chamber.
I do indeed pray with you, for travel, since you ask it, and for the inward rest which alone makes any outward scene a blessing. May He who calmed the stormy sea speak peace to your spirit, and may He open a door for you to go forth in safety and return with your strength renewed. But oh, rest most in this: “This is my rest forever: here will I dwell; for I have desired it.” He hath desired you for His resting-place; make your heart His home, and whether at land or sea, you shall find that His rest is glorious, and that in His service is perfect freedom and unshaken repose.
