Our prayer:
Heavenly Father, we thank You that just as Aaron and his sons were chosen and consecrated for this noble task, we pray that You would likewise prepare our hearts for service in Your Kingdom. Grant us the understanding of our own responsibilities as bearers of Your love, ambassadors of reconciliation, and instruments of Your peace. We understand that atonement is a sacred act—a bridge towards restoration and forgiveness. In our lives, we often stray from Your ways, and just as the people of Israel needed atonement for their sins, so do we. We come before You, confessing our shortcomings, our doubts, and our transgressions. We join with you in reflecting on the beautiful truth found in 1 Chronicles 6:49, But Aaron and his sons offered on the altar of burnt offering, and on the altar of incense, for all the work of the most holy place, and to make atonement for Israel, according to all that Moses the servant of God had commanded.

We are thankful for how you have laid out the significance of this verse. We see together that God in His holiness and love did not leave His people without a way to be cleansed. Sin separates us from God, for all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God, being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God sent to be an atoning sacrifice, through faith in his blood, Romans 3:23-25. The priesthood of Aaron and his sons was ordained by God Himself, not by human invention, and it shows both the seriousness of sin and the mercy of God who provided atonement.

We love how you highlighted the two altars. The altar of burnt offering speaks of the cost of sin and the need for blood to be shed, and the altar of incense speaks of communion and intercession, of prayers rising before the Lord. The priests as mediators teach us that no one can approach a holy God on their own merit. That entire system, including the yearly entrance of the high priest into the Most Holy Place on the Day of Atonement described in Leviticus 16, was a shadow pointing to a greater reality.

That greater reality is Jesus Christ, the Bread of Heaven and the living Word of God. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God, John 1:1, and The Word became flesh, and lived among us, John 1:14, and His name is called The Word of God, Revelation 19:13. He is not only the Word who reveals the Father but the true bread from heaven who gives life to the world, John 6:51. Where Aaron and his sons offered repeatedly the blood of bulls and goats which could never take away sins, Hebrews 10:4, Jesus offered Himself once for all.

We cling to the promise of Hebrews 9:11-12, But Christ having come as a high priest of the coming good things, through the greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this creation, nor yet through the blood of goats and calves, but through his own blood, entered in once for all into the Holy Place, having obtained eternal redemption. And Hebrews 7:26-27 reminds us that such a high priest was fitting for us, holy, guiltless, undefiled, separated from sinners, and made higher than the heavens, who doesn't need, like those high priests, to offer up sacrifices daily, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. For he did this once for all, when he offered up himself.

Because of this we now have confidence that there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 1 Timothy 2:5, and Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me, John 14:6. There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved, Acts 4:12. It is only through faith in Jesus that we have access to God, and we rejoice that you have centered your prayer on Him as our ultimate sacrifice.

This changes how we live today. We no longer need a human priest to stand between us and God, for we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, Hebrews 4:14. Therefore we are invited, Let us therefore draw near with boldness to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy, and may find grace for help in time of need, Hebrews 4:16. And as a royal priesthood ourselves, 1 Peter 2:9, we are now called to offer spiritual sacrifices and to intercede for one another, letting our prayers rise like incense before the Lord, Revelation 5:8.

We pray together with you, Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your perfect provision for atonement. We thank You for choosing Aaron and his sons to serve in the tabernacle according to all that Moses Your servant commanded, and for showing us through them the holiness You require and the mercy You provide. Forgive us for the times we have strayed, for our doubts and transgressions, and cleanse us from all unrighteousness through the blood of Jesus Christ, Your Son, who entered the Most Holy Place once for all and secured eternal redemption for us. We place our full trust in Him as our High Priest and our atoning sacrifice. Teach us to live as Your people who draw near with boldness to Your throne of grace, and to offer our prayers continually as incense before You. Make us faithful ambassadors of reconciliation, bearing Your love and Your Word to a world that needs Your forgiveness. Help us to remember daily the cost of our redemption and the joy of direct access to You through Christ. This precious portion of Chronicles sets before us a great truth which every sinner needs to understand. Aaron and his sons were set apart by God himself to stand between a holy God and a sinful people, to present offerings upon the altar of burnt offering and upon the altar of incense, and to make atonement for Israel in the Most Holy Place according to all that Moses the servant of God had commanded.

Here we see the seriousness of sin and the necessity of atonement. Sin separates, and without shedding of blood there is no remission. The priests could not invent a way of approach. They acted only as God prescribed, for access to Him requires mediation of His own appointing. Yet that great Day of Atonement did not see an actual atonement made, nor sin really put away, but it was the figure of heavenly things, the shadow of good things to come. The substance is of Christ.

How blessed is the contrast for us who look to Calvary. Aaron entered with the blood of bulls and goats, and must enter again year by year. But our great High Priest has entered into the heavenly places once for all, not with the blood of others, but with His own blood, having obtained eternal redemption. The presenting of the blood before God effects the atonement, and Jesus Himself presents His own merits within the veil on our behalf.

When a man is washed in that sacred laver which is filled with the blood of the Atonement, he is not partially cleansed, but he is thoroughly cleansed. Not so much as the shadow of a spot remains upon the blood washed. There is therefore now no condemnation to them who are in Christ Jesus. If that cleansing were partial, it were of no use. If it left but one sin still upon us in the sight of God, it would have no power to save. But when once applied by the Holy Spirit and received by faith it makes a total and complete cleansing from all past guilt, and that is its power to quiet the trembling conscience.

And what a word is this for the distressed soul, There is forgiveness with Thee. Suppose the question had been left open, forgiveness or no forgiveness, where could we find it. But God has not left it in doubt. He says, I, even I, am He that blotteth out thy transgressions. There is forgiveness, not for this sin or for that alone, but broad and indefinite, forgiveness for whatever thy sins may have been. If thou art the chief of sinners, there is the chief of sinners forgiveness, and God can bestow it now. He not only forgave at the first all our sins, but He continues daily to forgive, for the act of forgiveness is continuous and eternal in Christ Jesus.

You have well called Him the Bread of Heaven and the Word of Life, for He is the Word of God made flesh, who gave Himself as the true sacrifice and who ever lives to make intercession for us, as the incense upon the golden altar showed forth the prayers of the people ascending before the Lord. Now through Him we have direct access, and are bidden to come boldly to the throne of grace.

May the Lord grant you this double cleansing of which the Scripture speaks, first the cleansing from guilt and uncleanness by the fountain opened for sin, and then the cleansing of the life and conduct that follows upon it. God Himself applies this cleansing. Seek it not by your own doings or efforts, but accept that cleansing which God has promised in the covenant of grace, for the blood of Jesus Christ, God's Son, cleanses from all sin everyone who believes in Him.

Let us pray together.

Heavenly Father, we bless Thee that Thou hast provided atonement for sinful men, not by our works but by the precious blood of Thine own Son, our great High Priest. We confess our shortcomings and transgressions, and we come with penitent hearts desiring Thy forgiveness. Sprinkle clean water upon us and we shall be clean. Wash us in the blood of Jesus and make us whiter than snow. Grant us to know the completeness of Thy pardon, that being cleansed we may walk in newness of life, offering our prayers as incense before Thee and serving Thee with joyful hearts. Keep us near the cross, and make and keep us pure within, to the praise of Thy glorious grace. In the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.
