The narrow gate

You plead with fervor for your husband’s soul, desiring that he find the narrow gate. This is a good and right desire. The way is indeed narrow, and many are weighed down by the fatness of worldly cares, so that they cannot enter. Our Lord Himself said with wonder, “How narrow is the way that leadeth unto life!” And we make it narrower still when we cling to riches and ease. So it may be that God, in His mercy, must strip away those superfluous things that encumber him, even permitting the breaking of earthly attachments, so that he may see clearly that Christ alone is the way, the truth, and the life. Do not be afraid when affliction comes; for the Apostle says, “Whether we be afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation.” The sufferings that visit us are often the very chisel by which God carves out a lean and teachable soul.

Yet remember the woman at the well. When she sought the living water, our Lord did not immediately grant her request. Instead, He said, “Go, call thy husband.” He probed her life, exposing her hidden shame, not to humiliate, but to heal. She did not flee; she perceived that He was a prophet and then pressed after heavenly doctrine. So too your husband may need to be confronted with the truth of his own soul before he can receive the gift. But this is God’s work alone. Pray that He would both open the eyes of his understanding and unveil the Gospel, for a veil lies over the heart, and unless it is removed, no one can see the light of the glory of Christ.

Do not, however, imagine that harshness from you will profit. The wife who pleases her husband wins him not through sharp words or constant pressure, but through gentleness, meekness, and a quiet spirit. The fear of God in your own life, shining forth in modest and orderly conduct, will be a stronger witness than many arguments. Be as the Church is to Christ, in submission and reverence; let your chaste behavior speak when you are silent. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the Church, and He is the Savior of the body. So commit your husband to God, who alone can save.

Pray without ceasing, then, but pray with this wisdom: ask not that the man himself be broken, but that the hardness of his heart be shattered; that the veil of unbelief be torn away, that the cords of sin be severed. The narrow gate stands before him; may the Lord grant him to become lean enough to press through, stripped of everything that hinders, and enter into life while the door still stands open.

The weight of your prayer tells me you love your husband with a fierce, holy ache, and that is no small thing. To ask the Lord to do whatever it takes, even if it means breaking him to bring him to the narrow gate, is a petition that comes from a place of deep understanding. You see the reality clearly. Wide is the gate and broad the way that leads to destruction, and it is filled with people who walk it with ease. The straight gate, the narrow way that leads to life, is the one few find because it requires such a pressing. Sometimes a person is put into a narrow place, squeezed until the kinks are straightened out. The anguish of that pressure is real, but its purpose is to bring him to the only One who is the way, the truth, and the life. Your prayer is not cruel; it is desperate love asking for his true good.

While you wait and watch for that work in him, your own calling is clear and not lost on me. The instructions for a wife whose husband does not yet believe are remarkably gentle in their command and powerful in their promise. If he is pleased to dwell with you, let her not leave him. You are not the agent of his breaking; you are a vessel of a mysterious sanctifying reality. The unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife. Your steady presence, your love that does not waver, your very life united to his creates a holy influence in your home that you may not feel but God acknowledges. Your children are brought into a place of blessing because of your faith, not pushed out into uncleanness. You are the one rule in action, submitting to your husband as unto the Lord, not because he has earned it or understands it, but because you trust the Christ who sees you. I know it can feel impossible to submit when you question his love, but your anchor is not ultimately in his performance; it is in the Lord who has the power over his body, his heart, and his eternity.

Yet do not let your own heart be shrunk by the pressure of this place. Your prayer for his eyes to be opened is heard, but make sure your own confession is true, acknowledged by a life of service that pleases the Lord, not a frantic striving. Do not receive this grace of God in vain yourself. Today is the day of salvation for you as much as for him, a day to trust, to give thanks, to rest. You are not the one who pries open the gate, and you cannot pass your conviction onto him. The Lord alone enters the shut gate of a human heart. He came through the gate, and the righteous shall enter in with Him. Trust that He knows the precise moment to roll away the stones we foolishly pile up, and until then, your faithful, loving, prayer-soaked life is a greater witness than any argument. Do not turn aside from the narrow way yourself; keep your eyes on the Prince who will eat bread with His people in the peaceful porch of that gate.

We want to thank you for the privilege of standing with you in prayer for your husband's heart. It is a sacred trust to intercede on behalf of another soul, and we have carried your burden before the Lord with great hope and expectation. Scripture reminds us that the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, yet our Savior is the One who opens eyes, softens hearts, and draws all men to Himself.

If the Lord has already begun to move in your husband's life—if you've seen even the smallest shift in his spirit or awareness—we would be overjoyed to hear your praise report. Please share how God is working, so we may rejoice together in His faithfulness. If, however, the answer has not yet come, we encourage you to post this request again as a fresh plea before the throne of grace. We are committed to continuing with you in prayer, believing that the One who began a good work will complete it in His perfect timing.

May the Holy Spirit strengthen your faith as you wait, and may the love of Christ surround your home, drawing your husband ever closer to the narrow gate. We pray this in the powerful and precious name of Jesus.
