What is our blessing? The Will of our Father, for each and every one of us in and through Jesus Christ. How many of us go before God, with our prayer requests, and finish with these four words: According to Your Will? His Will! Why do so many seem to be afraid of it? How many of us, at some time, have gone before God with our pleas and wanted and expected no less than what we are asking for? And why would we ever think that the all powerful and sovereign God must base His Will on our wants, no matter what they are? We site His Word’s such as 1 John 5:14 "And this is the confidence that we have toward Him, that if we ask anything according to His Will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us - whatever we ask - we know that we have what we asked of Him.” His Word’s are true and He is always faithful to them. How many who read these Words, either do not recognize, understand, or refuse to acknowledge, those all-important Words in this verse: HIS WILL? Is it because we are afraid of His Will? Can we not completely submit our will to His? Do we really trust Him in all things? Are we afraid His Will is not in line with what we want? Matthew 7:9-11 says: “Which of you, if your son asks you for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask Him!” These Word’s are repeated in Luke 11:11-13 and show us that His Will is better than anything we can ask for! If our God is never changing, consistent in all things, never contradicting Himself, and favors no one, then John and Matthew’s Words are also consistent with each other. How important were these Word’s to Jesus? One of first things the Lord asks of God in the Lord’s Prayer is “Thy Will be done”. And when facing His own death, Matthew 26:39 says “Going a little further, He fell with His face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup pass from me. Yet not as I Will, but as You Will.” (NIV). Again in John 6:38 the Lord says, “For I have come down from heaven not to do my Will but to do the Will of Him who sent me.” Jesus tells us throughout His Word to seek the father’s Will first, above ours. He set the example. The Lord is not saying that He does not want to give us good things, no matter what they are, when we come to Him. He is saying His Will for us is better that anything we can ask for, if we just have faith and trust in Him. How can His Will for us not be His greatest blessing in our lives? It is His Will for us to have salvation through His Son Jesus Christ. It is His Will to have complete fulfillment in and through His Son. It is His Will to have victory over all things in our lives through the indwelling of His Holy Spirit. But most importantly, to be a living sacrifice to our God. Romans 12:1-2 tells us “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God – this is your true and proper worship. Do not be conformed to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s Will is – His good, pleasing and perfect Will.” Yes, His Will for us is the greatest blessing of all. And if it is, should we not be seeking it above all things? Why deny ourselves greater things than we can ever imagine or ask for. Surrender ourselves completely to God’s Will. After all, isn’t it His Will that brought us to himself through Jesus Christ in the first place? We are told throughout scripture that His Will is what we are all to seek first and always. How can His Will for us not be our greatest blessing of all!
